2020 In Season Trade ideas

PreviousPage 9 of 43Next

Forgot to mention that I think we can get Rosenthal or Workman at a reasonable price and I'm still liking the idea of getting Todd Frazier from the Rangers - Padres announcers were saying how great a clubhouse guy he is and he would be an upgrade over France.  I think he'd fit right in with our clubhouse culture.  Also, think that move is totally doable.   What I don't want is to go out and sign someone like Puig!  Please, no!

The issue is we have to trade from our current 58 man roster.

So very limited.

Would you trade France straight up for Frazier?

You're talking about 4 years of France for less than two months of Frazier.

Yes if they see France in the same light as Cordero / Bolanos .... nice prospects but without a future. France is not beating out Machado or Hosmer who will be around longer than France.

IF they see Frazier as the missing piece to go deep into the playoffs for the first time in a decade ... it could happen.

Worry about DH in 2021 in 2021.

With Pham out I like the idea of going after Brian Goodwin. With Trout, Adell, and Marsh in the fold I think the Angels would be willing to move him.

Heard this before but heard it again in the Padres’ pre-game ... essentially ... there may be a lot of reluctance to give up prospects for a “rental” because of the risk that the season gets cancelled (still potential) and losing prospects for no return.

That may even extend to a player with 2021 under control if the primary reason for the deal is 2020 playoffs. Can always revisit a deal in the winter.

Leads to maybe deals involving only “fringe” prospects which should tamper down the quality of the ML player in the deal.

The Angels will want young, controllable pitching. I wouldn't give them anyone other than Pagan or possibly Lucchesi for him. They would want Quantrill, Patino or Morejon. I would never do that.

I was thinking something like Lucchesi plus Owen Miller or Luis Torrens. Simmons, La Stella and Castro are all set to be free agents, so I think getting a cheap potential replacement and a starter would be appealing to them.

Seems as though Boston and PHIL are discussing a deal ... multiple players being discussed ... but a known name is Brandon Workman. 32 year old RP who is a FA after the season ... 6.1 innings this year (4.05 ERA / 1.80 WHIP) and a career 3.75 ERA. Basically not great RP.

So, should be informative to see how this deal goes down and the level of prospect that goes to Boston. Might give some structure for the Padres’ deals in 2020.

Should note that most seem to see RP ... any kind ... as the most sought after trade commodity.

Probably under valuing Goodwin (from LAA view) and over valuing Lucchesi - Torrens, - Miller as a package.

Goodwin is 29 ... low cost ... controlled in 2021-22 .... in 2020 270/349/541 and career 257/323/468 (basically above average OPS player). Above average ML player is worth a lot. Angels may be out of it in 2020 but might be early to punt on Goodwin (who has value for them in 2021) since Adell nor Marsh has produced at the ML level and Upton is perpetually injured. Angels expect to rebound in 2021 and IF they moved Goodwin .. gambled on the others ... it would have to be for a quality ML arm that would help in 2021 or an impact catcher.

Lucchesi has failed to make the #5 SP on the Padres .. a spot still searching for a body ... no sale. Miller / Torrens not proven for 2021.

MAYBE if the names like Morejon, Quantrill, Patino, Mejia were part of the deal Angels may listen.

If they acquired Goodwin ... LHH ... does that spell the end of Pham in 2021 or is he exclusively a DH?

With regard to the Phillies/Boston rumor, I'm not sure what the Phillies could offer that other teams couldn't that want Workman.  Phillies don't have a deep farm system nor is their on-field depth that superior that one of those guys will become a star player.  On the other hand, Boston is probably one of those teams that don't want to deal with Preller, going all the way back to the Pomeranz deal.  Truth is, they got more out of Pomeranz than we did with Anderson Espinoza, so get over it!  Personalities aside, probably greater chance we get Rosenthal than Workman, but a lot of competition for bullpen arms so a definite seller's market.  How badly Pomeranz is hurt may depend on how high we are willing to go - even with this short season.
