2020 In Season Trade ideas

PreviousPage 7 of 43Next

More RP's:  Keone Kela - Pirates.  with warning label.    Royals have Trevor Rosenthal looks really good.  Also Greg Holland & for 16 MM prorated... Ian Kennedy 🙂

Amazing we are talking about having to add relievers.

We started the season so deep there.

I remember when we signed Stammen I couldn't believe it because we already had so many bullpen arms I didn't think it was necessary.

Now I still don't think it was necessary but because of his performance(which I anticipated),not because we had too many bullpen arms.

I felt same way!  But now the # of guys there & needed for depth has increased.  I feel like in essence we lost our closer AND 7th inning guy Pagan b/c he just hasn't pitched like in the past yet.  I do think he'll get on track, but it's still a glaring need obviously brought on by Kirby's injury.

Because 5 RP's added this year are all multiple years of control, I wouldn't worry about that for this acquisition.  Instead, keep the "cost" of the trade down in prospects by taking on the salary.

I've got the trade!  It sounds a little insane, but it actually makes sense.

Given the pen struggles, I feel it's critical they "replace" Kirby to have a viable back of their bullpen.  There are a pretty decent # of guys in last year of Arb or otherwise entering FA.  True "rentals", with the rental period being only 30 days or less; roughly half the time a traded player would spend with new team at a normal trade deadline...

Trade:  Javier Guerra (& Luis Perdomo? or PTBNL) for Trevor Rosenthal

Guerra's tantalizing potential does not fit on this year's short season playoff potential Padres.  He needs this year (& maybe next) to be on a non-contending team where him taking his lumps "won't matter".   If he were having this year's struggles on last year's Pads team, that would've been OK.  He comes with 4+ years of cheap control.

"Rosenthal" (or other late inning RP) provides zero future value to out of it Royals.  Guerra may fail to develop, but if he does, he could be a late inning fixture.  Royals save some $ too.   Perdomo is probably wishful thinking; using his last option diminishes his future value as his cost rises.  Not a given he would be claimed if DFA right now.  But still a MLB experienced RP/SP depth guy who was effective last year for maybe just over 1 MM in 2021 & 2 year control.  Prospect from deep in the ranks, think Intl 19 yr old more likely.

Surely AJ is combing through the Reliever rental options.

A good idea ... Rosenthal has been effective this season. With about a month to go .. only about a $300K player. KC should be looking at any kind of return possible.

Padres have some fringe pieces that are unlikely to even survive the winter on the roster and have long shot chances to help in the future ... beyond Guerra and Perdomo ... Reyes is still around. The limit to players in the 60 pool is unfortunate since could see a number of non-roster minor leaguers that could appeal to KC.

Bet KC is getting a lot of calls on Rosenthal ... every contender needs a RP boost. Consensus no team will be giving up much to get one month of a FA to be relief pitcher, so hard to gauge if a Guerra / Perdomo / Reyes type player gets a deal done.

That off day coming up at home between series really stands out as a "Target" date (the exact midpoint of season) to pull the trigger if going to make a trade; allow time for an acquisition to get to SD with Covid protocols before heading out for what might be a critical 4 game series @ Colorado the last 4 days of August... having a new key arm in pen for that series could  impact 2nd place in the NL West....

... yes, I'm dead set on a RP.  Most logical & likely target.  C seems unrealistic with 3 MLB options + Campusano in the wings likely a year away.  OF mix & match feels OK, but would be in big trouble if Myers or Grisham went down.  Only other target would be a "bat first" DH type > France, but who from those few sellers?

Jimmy Yacabonis to Seattle for cash!  Who would have thought we had a RP right under our noses that someone wanted.  Just feeling a little sarcastic today.  Agree that there are probably a number of relief pitchers who fit our needs but the competition for them will be stiff.  Hope we don't overpay.

Pads definitely have one of the #1 or 2 best "prospect pools" available in their 60-man pool of all the MLB teams.  Theoretically, we should be able to "win" a trade for a player multiple teams want.  Some thoughts on that...

  • For a Rosenthal type RP rental, to me our top 10 prospects are off limits.  It's around #11-12 I start thinking about it, even though that still seems really steep (Joey Cantillo/Owen Miller range).  Would probably want a prospect back from KC or whoever in addition to the RP for a player like that.  Normal year a top 100 prospect might be the price, but the length of control is only half "normal", so while obviously it's whatever "the market" will bear, don't think it will be near this high.
  • If "KC" has no interest in Guerra in trade, could still trade him separately to a different team for a prospect.  So "Net" might look like:  Joey Cantillo & Javier Guerra for: Trevor Rosenthal, a good PTBNL, and a top 30 our system non roster prospect
  • Regarding all trade in general, does anyone know if there's a reason why the Padres or any other team with room in their 60-man player pools can't just add a prospect to the pool just prior to making the trade?   Wouldn't this technically satisfy the "must be in the pool" rule?
  • Really our #1-5 (Gore, Patino, Abrams, Trammell, & Campusano) are all such obvious good fits that are in the future plans, it's hard to see any of them getting traded for anything but an elite difference making multiple control year guy... but that guy would likely at least be in Arb, which would add $$ to high payroll in 2021.  So don't think these guys get traded.

If someone is dangling a Merrifield or a Bogaerts along with a quality RP would you do it, i.e., trade away either a Gore or a Patino as part of the package? What if you got offered Clevinger and Hand?  It's got to be extremely hard to decide where you draw a line in the sand between winning now and projecting the career of a uber-prospect.  Don't think we'll see anything so dramatic before the trade deadline but still hold out hope for an upgrade without having to sacrifice too much to do so.
