2020 In Season Trade ideas
Quote from fenn68 on August 28, 2020, 7:00 pmSaw a note (somewhere between rumor and speculation) that the Padres may be interested in a deal for Keone Kela (RP) from the Pirates. Very good RP and a FA after the season.
What makes the very odd is that the Pirates put Kela on the IL (retro to Monday) and unable to pitch before the trade deadline. So, PITT loses a major trade chip (at least value) given the unknown of his full health.
If you are Preller, would you take the gamble that he can be healthy ... especially for the playoffs .... and still deal for him? What is the limit as to what you would trade with zero guarantee he will even be able to pitch. No point in PITT holding on to him.

I was thinking more Reyes off the 60 ... Pitt has zero leverage trying to deal an injured FA to be. Maybe the Padres would be the only bidder. Actually maybe not Reyes but more like a PTNL / Cash .. player out of the McGrath or Schlotens mold.

I just think that Naylor is one of the most worthless players on the team, so IMO he is worth a pitcher that may never pitch for us.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 28, 2020, 10:14 pmI'm not understanding the negativity regarding Naylor. He's hitting .281, making decent contact and has a low strikeout rate. What has he done or not done different from any other Padre? Is he a worse hitter than Profar or Hedges? Has he made more errors than Grisham or Cronenworth? Has he got picked off base 3 times like Tatis? Why are you guys so negative about him? He runs out balls hard and gives a good effort in the field.

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2020, 7:11 amConsidering our other discussion of Grisham struggles vs LHP and searching for other options at lead-off (but not really taking Grisham out of the line-up because he is needed in CF) .... what about Kevin Pillar?
He would be a pure rental (FA after the season) ... is hitting LHP in 2020 ... can play CF/LF.
Boston is clearly in the seller mode ... not sure who else may be in the market for Pillar ... but given the return Boston took for 2 RP ... probably pretty close to a PTNL level.
Side note: Cameron Maybin also fits that model and is currently being pursued by the Cubs. I guess he too is an option.

I thought Union / bargaining agreement rules were that an IL player could not be traded?

They can be ... fuzzy on the specifics. Might require to approval from the Commissioner per one site. (would not be a problem). The IL period of 10 days remains but the potion with the previous club counts.
