2020 Draft

PreviousPage 16 of 20Next

Kids think they can do anything. They can't. Maybe a top prospect known for his hitting ability should, you know, work on that. Most prospects never make it to the majors. Even most first rounders don't stick. Having him pitch is a waste of his time and his focus. I am sure they will not let him. I don't believe he has any desire to do that anyway.

  • The Padres have inked fourth-rounder Levi Thomas for $80K, far below the $533K slot value of the 109th pick, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. The right-hander from Troy “has an impressive history of throwing strikes and his fastball seems to have qualities that teams love,” Baseball America wrote in ranking Thomas as the 224th-best prospect in the 2020 class.

So we still need to save in the neighborhood of $2 mil on the other 4 picks in order to sign Wilcox.

Not sure how that happens?

From Jim Callis:
5th-rder Jagger Haynes signs with @Padres for $300k (slot 139 = $398k). North Carolina HS LHP, super projectable at 6-3/170, feel for three pitches, 85-88 during spring but hit 93 in post-shutdown workouts. UNC recruit.

Surprised he took < 100K.  This is a sneaky good value pick saving $ for Wilcox, but also a good value pick in its own right...

#224 =  top of the 7th round (incl all the comp picks).  On a pure "ability" basis, the 7th round slot for Pads last yr was 225K.

Nice job by Preller et al!

Pretty sure he was looking at the alternative of not being drafted and limited to $20K ... made it known to the Padres that $80K would get it done ... then Padres drafted him to save money for Wilcox. If he wanted more ... Padres would have a different pick in that slot.

Probably at 22 was not eager to return to Troy for his senior season and wanted to get going (plus $80K is nice). Given no minor league season in 2020 .. he could go and finish school academically and then just pop into the extended ST next year and not miss a beat. No guarantee he would get more next draft as a Senior.

5th round pick signs a little lower than I speculated also.  #4 & #5 are 550K+ combined under slot.

To get Wilcox to 3 MM, they need about 1.7 MM.  They will get there.  The math works:  If the top 3 guys sign for what their "worth" based on MLB.com ranking is, there's easily enough.  But Hassell probably has to 1) get to/over 4 MM, 2) be > 1 MM+ than Wilcox.  Wilcox (Boras) & Hassell's agents will try to push Pads into the 5% over draft cap (about 500K) to get every last penny, but Pads might not be willing to spend that $ that this year with everything (not) going on.

Wilcox has leverage, but not as much as Hudson Head last year IMO.... "do you REALLY want to go into next year's draft with all the uncertainty..."

Boston leading the way with 11 Undrafted signings now.  Numerous teams around 7-8.  Pads still at same 6 guys.  But quite a few teams only 1-2 or even none reported.    Link to list is back a page on this thread

I am guessing that Boras at this stage is NOT doing much negotiation on Wilcox.

More likely is that Boras had a number to get Wilcox signed to all teams ... that number was too large for most teams (especially with smaller bonus allocations), so when he was not taken early he had that free fall to a team that felt confident they could arrange the bonuses for the rest of their draft to accommodate Boras’ ask. Enter the Padres. I would think Preller ... knowing he could get that “extra” $500K from going over allocation and could get money for under slot signings at #4 and #5 ,,,, just had to settle on an approximate signing amount (with the player / advisor) for Hassell, Lange, and Cassie before taking Wilcox.

Preller (and other teams) have this dance worked out pretty well ... plus the advisors also know the rules of engagement since it is in their best interested to get their client signed. Preller has gotten all these guys signed in the past ... no reason to think 2020 will be different. Not worried.

2 major differences from past 2 years are:

1)  No "free $" rounds 7 or 8 - 10 to 'create' overslot $; so Pads "created" it in 4th round, but also HAVE to sign all three top picks well under slot (which IS where they're valued) to be able to fit Wilcox in.

2)  Bigger issue is the 5% (+ 75% tax) overage.  Under normal circumstances, most teams would look at spending this $ to get 1 or 2 more guys signed --or lock in 1 guy well above slot like Wilcox-- as not only a no-brainer, but actually "smart" financially relative to the $ that gets spent to sign big FA's.   As said on this board, the tax in $ is only about 3-4% of the entire draft pool.

But this is not normal circumstances.  Teams cut rounds 6-10 of draft + max UFA amount to save relatively small amounts of $.  The 500K+ PLUS 375K+ Tax will not be casually spent this year.  Not saying it won't get spent or that it HAS to, but conceivable the increased reluctance to spend it could affect negotiations.... especially with a Boras client.
