2020 Draft

PreviousPage 15 of 20Next

Side note: given the rules the Padres can exceed the pool allotment by as much as 5% with "only" incurring a 75% penalty ... so maybe an additional $500,000 to sign Wilcox (at the cost of a $375,000 penalty). Maybe hard to justify while arguing with the MLBPA ... but a route they took in the amateur signings a few years back.

Add some flexibility in negotiations for all the picks.

THANK YOU for reminding me of this... I think I forget literally every year.   In normal years, it's insanely foolish to NOT spend an extra say 8-9% of your total draft pool to help "capture" (i.e. sign) more quality with an overslot signing or 2...

... but it's not a 'normal' year.  I HOPE the Pads are smart enough to have already green lighted this $ (vast majority of it is being deferred for 12-24 months, though guessing the penalty is not) to be spent.  If so, based on prior # crunching without it, it should definitely create the room to get everyone signed.  I would expect the signings in order to go: 5th (won't be surprised if he's at full slot > 4th round guy's $), 4th, 2nd picks, then Lange, leaving Hassell & Wilcox last.

I did just see somewhere that "only" 21 of 30 teams paid the penalty last year.   Wasn't expecting all 30 teams to, but thought it would be more like 24-25 teams doing so.  That # almost certain to go down this year... if they eliminated the (relatively) nominal $ from rounds 6-10 signings and 125K max against the pool down to 20K max, it is a sure sign that EVERY $ counts...

...close to 1 MM in 2020 carries a different weight than that $ last year.

I just read up on Robert Hassell's speed. He ran a 6.54 60-yard dash! That is 70 grade speed. Yet I consistently see his speed graded as 55. Does anyone know the truth of this? I mean if that is his real speed he is in the 98th percentile and should be just fine if not plus or better in CF.

Yeh, I saw that on the “Perfect Game” website .. and that should grade out a 70+ speed ... think is 6.7 seconds is the mark for a “60”.

Maybe the “55” grade came when he was clocked on an “off day”.

Either way ... doubt speed is an issue with Hassell anywhere in the OF.

Appears the Padres have their first 2 non-drafted FA:

Danny Denz ... LHP ... Sr. out of Memphis U. ... short / stocky and not much of a quality history but his 4 games in 2020 were good. Maybe a slot as a LHRP down the road.

Sam Ruta ... SS/3B ... HS in Pennsylvania ... might be a back story here but was committed to West Point. So either changed his mind or a speculative $20K gamble by the Padres that he has the talent to check out after his West Point commitment (or leaves West Point early).

Now Pads are up to 6, so far 2nd most behind Cubs 7.  Some teams haven't signed any yet.  Pads (& Cubs) Have signed 2 of  the 7 guys BA rated in top 500 that have signed as UFA so far ("15th" round territory by pure ability).  Only 1 guy (signed by Royals) signed so far is ranked > #400.    Surprisingly only 2 College Seniors (RHP, LH OF),   3 Juniors (2 RHP & LH INF), + Ruta.

Love that they're not "cheaping out" even with such a deep system, and competing for & getting some of the better talent.  Preller leaves no stone unturned.

Notes on a couple of the signings:

1. Carter Loewen ... 21, RHP, Hawaii. A career beset by injury and has barely pitched but a 95 MPH FB. IF IF IF type.

2. Michael Green ... OF, Clemson. Big end of 2019 but then got dismissed from the team prior to the 2020 season for violation of team rules. No idea why but to dismiss a player from a program is a big step.

3. Chase Walter ... RHP, Western Carolina. 6’7” / 240 ... not much success but he is big.

FWIW... Loewen was #465 on BA top 500, Walter #484

So are the chances the Padres deploy Robert Hassell as a two way player "zero" percent?

Pretty close to that.

Doubt they would want to expose a potential elite hitter / position player to injury as a pitcher with minimal upside ... if hitting fails maybe then. Primary focus needs to be on developing his primary value.

If he had been an elite pitcher who can hit ... might go differently.

Personally unless you are Ohtani ... find the 2 way player a nice novelty that even MLB doesn't really support given how they made the roster restrictions.
