Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2022, 4:43 pmQuote from Henry Silvestre on July 30, 2022, 2:10 pmCould we get Contreras + Happ and still have the best package on the table Tuesday morning to get Soto??
Easily especially if STL shifts to Montas and burns their trade assets.
Gore - Morejon
Abrams - Merrill
Hassell - Wood
Campusano - Ruiz
Rosario - Acosta
Knehr - Gasser
That is 12 very good prospects … use them all and that would get it done. Actually probably could get a better deal with Soto - Montas - Murphy.

With Kim playing extremely well at SS. Does adding Tatis' buddy Juan Soto help aide Nando mentally transitioning to the outfield (at least for this season)?
Last year, it seemed like he was visibly frustrated seeing Frazier playing 2B, forcing Jake to SS and himself to RF to help bridge the gap AND protect his shoulder. Does that issues dissipate this season knowing that Kim is worthy playing SS, and him moving to the OF, with his buddy Soto coming on board, gives them a better shot to win? Also not being displaced by a nobody (Frazier) acquired at the deadline who was clearly not a fit, would have to help, right?

Probably not a difference for Tatis at this point … nice yes but expect (hope) his mental state and team motivation has evolved as he is a year older and after this injury.
Kim’s play probably does more for the entire team being comfortable with Tatis to the OF (and getting Grisham out of the line-up).

After his motorcycle accident, Tatis is in no position to complain or pout about anything anymore.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 30, 2022, 8:17 pmFWIW our old friend Mike Hawk says on Twitter that the Los Angeles Dodgers are very close to acquiring Juan Soto for Gavin Lux and 4 prospects.
He’s been right before……and also not right enough times to remain hopeful this does not happen.
I’d prefer he stay in DC or go to the AL if we can’t swing a deal.

Well if LAD are putting Lux in the package .. and they do have some real prime prospects to offer … that should beat anything the Padres can offer. Lux is the game changer.
Ending up in LA is not a good thing for the Padres but with the expanded playoffs they always have the route of wild card with the shot of taking out the LAD in a seven game series.

Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2022, 8:57 pmGiven the magnitude of the package that was reportedly needed to secure Soto and if Soto goes elsewhere … might a somewhat lesser (but still robust) package convince PITT to move Reynolds. Not Soto to be sure but a CF with 3+ years control … would fill a major need and is a quality hitter.
Maybe a move on Reynolds and Montas/Murphy if Preller is in to win now and in 2023 and was already motivated to move prospects for Soto. Reynolds and Murphy gets them 3+ years of control of All Star level talent and Montas is 1+ control for competing in 2023.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2022, 4:21 amA lot of thinking on IF / THEN scenarios given a lot of the dominos are not under the Padres control.
First, it is clear (at least rumored) Preller will put a lot of top prospects in play in the Soto sweepstakes. So, IF
1. LAD land Soto (they if they want can give a superior package than SD) or it becomes clear to Preller that WASH is not moving Soto .. Soto out of the picture
2. Otani is not being moved by LAA and that becomes clear
3 STL shoots it prospect assets on Montas (their prime need is SP)
Preller still needs upgrades … and clearly has top prospects that he is willing to move and should be enough to:
1. Get PITT to move Reynolds and Bednar. Reynolds is only at $6.8MM with 3+ years control … All-Star … CF fills a need for years … good CBT fit vs other options. Bednar is at league minimum … closer … and his performance in 21-22 is top level … plus has 4+ years control. For the Padres not only fills current holes economically but creates three more years of stability.
2. Get OAK to move on Murphy … only at league minimum with 3+ years of control … one of the top catchers (WAR) and really elite defensively … something Melvin values and with the Padres pitching staff a quality defensive catcher makes them better. Replaces Nola and remember Alfaro is a FA after 2023.
Those two deals would help in 2022 but also create low cost stability for 3 years allowing the Padres to deploy money and other trade assets to boost the rest of the roster (ie SP starting in 2023.)
Murphy - Hosmer - Cronenworth - Machado - Kim - Profar - Reynolds - Tatis with a DH/bench of Voit - Mazara - Alfaro - plus 2 coupled with the pitching staff and a stronger end of game RP could get it done in 22.
Now just PITT and OAK to agree!
