A lot of thinking on IF / THEN scenarios given a lot of the dominos are not under the Padres control.

First, it is clear (at least rumored) Preller will put a lot of top prospects in play in the Soto sweepstakes. So, IF

1. LAD land Soto (they if they want can give a superior package than SD) or it becomes clear to Preller that WASH is not moving Soto .. Soto out of the picture

2. Otani is not being moved by LAA and that becomes clear

3  STL shoots it prospect assets on Montas (their prime need is SP)

Preller still needs upgrades … and clearly has top prospects that he is willing to move and should be enough to:

1. Get PITT to move Reynolds and Bednar. Reynolds is only at $6.8MM with 3+ years control … All-Star … CF fills a need for years … good CBT fit vs other options. Bednar is at league minimum … closer … and his performance in 21-22 is top level … plus has 4+ years control. For the Padres not only fills current holes economically but creates three more years of stability.

2. Get OAK to move on Murphy … only at league minimum with 3+ years of control … one of the top catchers (WAR) and really elite defensively … something Melvin values and with the Padres pitching staff a quality defensive catcher makes them better. Replaces Nola and remember Alfaro is a FA after 2023.

Those two deals would help in 2022 but also create low cost stability for 3 years allowing the Padres to deploy money and other trade assets to boost the rest of the roster (ie SP starting in 2023.)

Murphy - Hosmer - Cronenworth - Machado -  Kim - Profar - Reynolds - Tatis with a DH/bench of Voit - Mazara - Alfaro - plus 2 coupled with the pitching staff and a stronger end of game RP could get it done in 22.

Now just PITT and OAK to agree!

I think Oakland agrees...Pitt is the one that can be more difficult...I guess Mullens + Lopez from Baktimore would work too. But Baltimore playing too good to sell a few pieces?? Or Nah they will

I don’t see BALT as sellers … getting too close to being a playoff team … young with a strong set of prospects coming soon setting up a potential run for the playoffs the next few years. Not going to deal their younger / lower cost / controllable better players for prospects.

Actually don’t see them a buyers (at least for big talent) given they are not big spenders and covet their own prospects.

Seem like a stand pat team … see how 2022 falls but keep the eyes out for the next few years.

I can see the Nats trade (potential trade) expanding

To Padres

Cesar Hernandez 2B

Josh Bell 1B

Juan Soto

Kyle Fennigan BP

To Nats

Jake Croneworth 2B

CJ

Hassell

Morejon

Hosmer +$20mil

Myers

Zavala

Kerr

Murphy’s numbers aren’t my better than Alfaros’.

Better than Nola yes…but playing 4 games a week is it enough to lose top prospects?

Murphy is #1 defensive C in the game . NOLA is #20.. besides this team is> when Alfaro plays ..so Murphy is like 2 Alfaros with better Defense. Many borderline (ball calls ) would also be strikes with Murphys superior framing skills..by himself he upgrades Def/Offense/pitching...BUT not enough Offensively need to add another BAT

Yes for the premium defense … and control / cost factor. (Of course depends which / how many prospects). He will make the SP better … and that is the Padres strongest asset without diminishing the current offensive production out of the catchers.

As for Alfaro … mid-level catcher who will get more costly in 2023 and a FA in 2024 is not the future. Might be better served as the back-up / DH option … Padres move on from Voit (and what will be a greater than $6MM price tag in 2023).

Alfaro is like a more consistent  .less streaky Voit..with better speed and more flex position wise..definetely a better DH/C option.  C MURPHY.. DH/C Alfaro.  Would be > use of roster space ..than a DH only type like Voit..who can play 1B like 1x every couple weeks.

See that MLBTR is rumoring that the Padres, Rays, and Brewers are “interested” in dealing for Gallo. (Wonder if the NYY are leaking this to generate action vs. having to DFA him). Not likely to save money since they would clearly have to eat Gallo’s money or take an offsetting contract but might get a minor prospect … better than nothing.

Not a Gallo fan but if Preller could swing a deal using a “good prospect” could he get the NYY to take Myers (cost offset for two FA to be) and save a bit more of AAV space. Alternatively … would NYY bite on a package of Myers and Lamet since NYY has lost a key RP actually could use Lamet now and open even more CBT space.

I sort of see that kind of move as +0 with Gallo vs -0 with Myers / Lamet but + CBT space for an upgrade move with all the propsects still in play.

With Soto and Tatis back our best Defensive lineup

1B Profar *his defensive metrics are really really good at 1B

2B Crone/SS Kim/3B Machado/C Alfaro

LF Tatis/CF Grish/RF Soto

Line up I would go with

1. Tatis..2. Soto. 3..Manny..4 Alfaro..5.Crone .6 Profar. 7..Voit DH. 8..Kim 9. Grish

Gallo>Grish at CF . Better Def and speed . Better arm..and >Power.. Grish>bunter 😆

Don't hate this move for CF... not onboard for RF or DH.. Gallo + Soto.. play off each other's strengths with the bat (compliment eachbother) especially if Gallo finds the Alfaro *fountain* in SD
