Trades June/July/Deadline

Happ (Cubs) might not be a bad piece ..expensive cause he has sone control but can play all over the place..and has that contagious fiery personality that would play well in SD...

I know most of us don’t want to deal SP given what happened last year but maybe a door has opened for a deal (maybe 3 team) that could yield the Padres an OF bat.

Toronto just lost Ryu to TJ surgery (which will also end his 2023). Toronto is going all in this year and is a legit playoff candidate. Need another SP. Toronto has a nice collection of prospects to use in a deal.

Most quickly speculate that TOT will be pursuing OAK’s SP … likely.

IF the Padres would gamble and move Snell (obviously had been successful in the AL East with TB) to yield a ML OF … they also clear some cap space for this year (for the OF add) and 2023 (to help re-sign Musgrove, et al). Snell is only controlled thru 2023. Might not even need a major return piece. TOR has the money to take the contract. Also fits the roster adjustment to 13 pitchers going forward with currently (if healthy) 7 SP.

A gamble yes … but Snell is also a gamble. Outside chance Martinez could be a candidate now that he is eligible to be dealt and given his uncertainty of opting in for 2023.

I would hold off on trading any starting pitching until, we get through the Covid circling around and we see Gore bounce back for a game or two.

We can also stretch Morejon and Baez and Reiss Knerr proved he could go 5+ (4.2 scoreless the other day..2 more yesterday) if given the opportunity... I am on the trade Snell bandwagon BUT the big ?? Is for whom? And if Snell starts pitching like he did the 2nd half of last yr he is our best SP or 2nd best.. dude was on 🔥 last half of last yr... we may need him more than ever in the post season

Josh Bell might be the right piece for us... I looked at all the pending sellers and found only 2 1B who would UPGRADE Hosmer at 1B...

Bell and Ty France

Bell is a FA at the end of the yr is making $10mil... so acquiring him wont cost much.. BUT if we trade for him in all likelyhood Hosmer would be involved... so a much better prospect would have to be involved..

So Hosmer and # 3 Campusano +$20mil cash for Josh Bell would be my proposed trade... may not be popular trade in the clubhouse but we can't have Slappy hitting .280 with meh OBP and No SLG... Bell brings another Power Bat sorely needed in SD with a high BA and OBP... just what the Doctor order

As for France ..bringing the SDSU Aztec home would be Huge ..So would the package to get him..he is controlled for 3 more seasons and will be entering arb 1 ...again Hosmer would go up North increasing the overall package even more

P prospect Susana + OF # 2 Hassell + INF # 6 Rosario + Hosmer +$10 mil cash might do it...

In France Padres get one of the best hitters in baseball with BA/OBP and decent SLG who would anchor 1B for a while...France 3.2 WAR so far in 2022 makes him 2nd best behind Manny in SD and lining him up behind Manny in the clean up spot would give the offense a huge boost...

I can see AJP reluctant to get France after giving him away..but swallowing your pride and recognizing a mistake (bad trade) could be a nice gesture *at the cost of even more prospects to Seattle* by our GM..

Personally I'd love France back...But the value of 'renting' Bell and then pursuing him in FA at a much smaller prospect cost makes BELL the better short term /keep our prospects (Future) move that becomes even better if we retain Bell in the offseason

Way way under pay to get France given his status as one of the top offensive 1B / hitters in the ML. (Plus doubt Seattle who plans to contend even will entertain dealing France). If they did … think more Abrams / Gore type pieces … and no Homser.

Over pay on Bell … Campusano straight up may even be an overpay for 1/2 half season and WASH has no need to get burdened with Hosmer. They are the worst team in MLB … need to go with young prospects.

Seattle isn’t trading France….and they certainly wouldn’t trade him back to us.

They’d look pretty foolish after they basically stole him from us if they gave him back at almost any price and he continued to rake….and unfortunately I don’t see us trading Hosmer either.

These are trades we (the fans) all wish would happen…..just don’t see them actually happening in any shape or form.

Just shy of 6 weeks before the 2 August trade deadline.  Should we expect to be buyers or sellers or both?  A lot depends on the health and effectiveness of our starting rotation, assuming we still have 7 starters for the 6 man (Darvish-Manaea-Musgrove-Gore-Clevinger-Snell-Martinez).  If Gore starts to falter, Snell can't go through a line-up more than once and Clevinger can't stay healthy, then we can't be sellers and get anyone to help the offense to the extent giving up a starter would cost.  Starting depth is virtually non-existent at the top level of the minors and we really can't count on Knehr or Weathers to be more than temporary bandaids given their minor league track records thus far.

We probably do have an excess of RP's that might get us a prospect or two, but like our SPs, many of the RPs will have their contracts up at the end of the 2022 season.  I expect Pomeranz, Johnson and Castillo will be significant adds to the bullpen before the trade deadline and continued long relief roles for Martinez, Morejon and Crismatt if our first 6 starters remain healthy and effective.

From what I've seen thus far in the minors, our most untouchable prospects are likely Abrams, Merrill and Wood, not that Hassell and Campusano are not very good prospects.  The latter two could be moved but I hope Preller has to be overwhelmed to do so.

Therefore, my prediction is that nothing major happens unless the deal is a no-brainer.  We take a lot of salary off the books in 2023 but we need to sign our primary free agents, so that might just be a wash.  A lot depends on what happens during the next 6 weeks, so hold onto your hats!  I'm ready to be overwhelmed with an offer we can't refuse.

Agree that nothing significant will materialize at the trade deadline … but a lot can happen to the team in the next 6 weeks.

Start with the assumption that the Padres will still be in a solid playoff position … so no panic moves. Machado will be back in the line-up and (hopefully) Tatis … both performing (or expected to perform) at elite levels down the stretch … and that should elevate the rest of the line-up’s performance. I also would not discount the upgrade that Myers may bring as he returns in August/September. That should allow Preller to be very strategic in any moves.

Then he has to consider that any of his FA to be will not yield anyone significant to help the 2022 squad since they would be of interest only to a contender who is not deal a key piece for them. Trading a “controllable” piece may get him a better return piece but with he FA to be would create a problem going forward in 2023 with no guarantee that the add will actually help.

Guess that none of the primary prospects will be in play unless it is a blockbuster deal for a star with 3+ years control … not likely.

So, maybe the trade chips are out of the pen if Pomeranz, Castillo, Johnson, or any others are considered as ready upgrades. Garcia, Suarez, Hill, Stammen, are not getting them much in return although moving one or more may be necessary just to fit in Pomeranz et al in a 7 man pen with the marginal arms without options. In my mind the pending FA of Musgrove, Manaea, Clevinger, and maybe Martinez couple with injury concerns just takes SP out of the trade mix.

I would expect the action to pickup around the All-Star break and hopefully we'll gain some clarity before then. Hopefully we'll know more about a lot of our injured players.

Right now the bullpen looks like it could use another arm or 2, but if the likes of Pomeranz, Johnson, Castillo, Baez, Adams, Lamet, and Suarez look like they're going to get back and be able to contribute that becomes much less of a need.

If Mazara keeps producing and Wil comes back healthy and performs back to his standards the OF situation looks a lot better.

Contreras could be a big upgrade, but if Alfaro keeps performing and Nola gets going it's not as significant.

If Hosmer doesn't get going I could see AJ finally moving him and trying to bring in someone like Cruz, Mancini or Bell to try to help the team this year while freeing up some more money to resign some of our guys.

If all of our starters are healthy and pitching well maybe we move one for a bat. I could also see us trying to make a move with a team like the Marlins to pickup a young starter knowing that all of our starters, but Gore can hit free agency after this year or the next. Luckily for us our strong start should allow us to let it play out for as long as we can before deciding the best course of action. I'm sure AJ will make at least a couple of moves. It should be an exciting time.
