Quote from BoosterSD on November 29, 2019, 11:12 amSo the guy that wrote this article for MLB must live in CIN and indulge in hallucinogenic drugs. He suggests a 3 way trade between CIN/SEA/SD.
CIN gets Haniger and Narvaez from SEA, Margot and Beaz from SD.
SD gets Sonny Gray
SEA gets India and Santillan from CIN, and this is the crazy part........Cantillo AND Patino from SD.
Why on Earth would SD give up Margot, Baez, Cantillo, and Patino for Gray? Now I would trade for Gray, I was in on that idea last offseason, but not for those four guys. That is what I would offer for Castillo from the Reds, not Gray.

I think if we give them enough prospects they would consider it.....and/or paid part of Myers deal.
If they could get Myers for $10 mil a season and 3 prospects that would be in their top 10-12?
But would be more likely for a team that has "already" shed payroll...like Miami or Detroit.

I would do that deal if Patino is taken out.
Margot/Baez/Cantillo and maybe add a Ornelas or Ruiz or another of our 10-20 rated guys.
Maybe Bolanos if they want another arm or Marcano if they want an infielder?
But Baez,Patino AND Cantillo?
I think most are sleeping on Cantillo.
I see him in our top 10 next season easily.

I think SEA makes out the best in this deal and find this unlikely from CINN perspective ... an organization that wants to contend in 2020 and needs offense. Haniger is a pure gamble on his return ... Margot does not hit ... leaving Narvaez the key plus piece .. he can hit but is a poor defensive option (and only 3 control years).
For that they give up Gray (30) under 4 years of control at about $43MM (AAV of around $11MM) which is a fantastic value for a SP who just delivered a 2.87 ERA (175 innings) and a 4.4 WAR. Oh yeh, throw in India and Santillian.
Put Sonny Gray on the market and a lot of suitors for a significantly better return would emerge and the Padres would be standing in line to make offers. They key would be ML player that elevate CINN in 2020 (prospects would be more filler). Padres open the bidding with Mejia - Margot - Lucchesi? Renfroe's power would play in CINN and the NL Central. A lot of mix and match options to get a well above average SP on the comparatively cheap.
Last season Sonny Gray's WAR at 4.4 is in the same range as Ryu (4.8) and Wheeler (4.7) ... and the much hyped Syndergaard was also 4.4 but comes with arbitration increases and shorter control. IF Gray was on the market ... would pay up big time.

That changes the equation ... essentially they buy prospect by taking on Myers' contract. Still easier for me to see that in DET, MIA, TOR than whatever is going on in BALT.

I think BAL hired their GM really late and then had other priorities to take care of before setting out and getting his roster straight. So I think this will be the offseason that Elias starts getting his fingerprints on the roster and the rebuild.

Quote from fenn68 on November 29, 2019, 3:45 pmWhile seeking the "big" adds this winter via trade or FA ... we may be shorting the valuable strategy of dealing FOR prospects that will impact 2021 and beyond ... basically extending the moves that yielded Trammell and Grisham. Preller could work both strategies.
Padres have a some trading "excess" in the catching ranks (and catching is in short supply upping trade value), arguable some "excess" pitching ML ready now with the add of Davies, and some potential OF trade chips. Maybe those chips yield more value in securing plus prospects from contenders that they would yield in a trade for veteran ML upgrade players. Preller probably already know which of his trade chips is really drawing interest ... and at what value.
A lot of potential scenarios but hypothetically ... a team such as MINN with a strong offense returning but potentially developing a SP hole (plus a need for a back-up C) might be interested in a Lucchesi / Bolanos ML ready type and a catcher like Allen for back-up. Not needing immediate offensive help and with MLB #15 OF prospect Kirilloff coming soon ... they may be willing to move MLB #77 Larnach ... a LHH RF who can hit with power, good defensively with a plus arm ... now in AA (hit .295). Padres get some "protection" on the development of Grisham / Trammell and MINN gets to be stronger in 2020 to beat out Cleveland and before CWS bulk up to contend which may push them to offer up a talent such as Larnach.
LAA and Marsh (AA LHH OF) was brought up earlier ... same scenario with LAA having a pretty stacked OF/1B/DH but way short on pitching and catching. Could Marsh be pried away with Hedges (guessing Maddon likes experienced defensive C) and a SP (Quantrill or Bolanos). IF Moreno is going big money on Cole/Strasburg ... it is to win and potentially Houston becomes vulnerable ... all in now at the expense of an "excess" prospect?
In both cases each team is trading from "excess" and filling a need. Probably not both deals but the point that could still be a strategic plan to winning in 2021.

Quote from JasonE135 on November 29, 2019, 5:41 pmI would love either of these, and these are the kinds of trades Preller usually makes. I just though that he would mostly put trading for prospects on hold for this year since he has been told to win right now! I hope he continues with these trades. This is what he is good at. Taking advantage of the situation and getting a good prospect by exploiting another team's urgent need. It just seems like Fowler has backed him into a corner this year, so he is now on the other side of that trade equation. He has specific needs that he has to address this year, so other teams will be working HIS needs to get better prospects than they should because he is desperate. I am praying that you are right and AJ stays strong!
