All that getting Villar would cost is making a claim and paying his $10 million salary, right? That would be a major boost to our offense.

I would be good with adding Villar on a 2 year deal if it’s affordable.

Maybe 2/14

Edwards to take over in 2022.

If you know me you know I love guys who can run.

Well if he makes it though waivers and then is non tendered, then we can just flat out negotiate with Villar as a FA. Might not even take $10M.

I am sure somebody will claim him. He is easily worth $10 million, to anyone but Baltimore it seems. I love guys who can run and steal bases too Mr. P. He seems to be close to perfect for us.

But hasnt BAL been looking to trade him for a couple of weeks? If thats the case, then MLB is telling BAL they are right and he is not worth the $10M he is going to get in arb. So, if/when he becomes a FA, we can sign him for closer to market value, which might be 1 for $7M or 2 for $12M.

I dont understand Orioles here? They could go to arb Villar can get $10 mil (but arb contracts aren't guar anteed unless Villar is on opening 40 man roster) so Orioles could have had now until end of ST to trade him or could simply cut him before they had to pay him if nothing could be worked out ..sort of wack.. If you ask me.. We aren't talking a non tender Greg Garcia.. We are talking a 4 WAR ($34 mil value 2019) 2B.. Surely someone would be willing to give Baltimore a truck load of bats and baseballs for Villar.. Why not get something imstead of nada..

We have #8 waiver spot right?

Yes.  And I agree he's the best 2B option out there.  But the problem is, if we claim him, and are the highest priority team to do so, we would just end up paying the whole 10 MM (could be higher) for just 1 year.  Remember, O's straight waiving him means NO team including us, was willing to give up anything at all for the right to have Villar for 1/10.  Think ideal for Pads would be a 2 year deal, but not 2/20 with another 5.5 MM already committed to Kinsler & Garcia.

Preller (& other GM's) may have just hoped O's would salary dump him, making him a FA to negotiate on TEAM's terms.

The only way I think SD should trade for Villar is if it is part of a deal where Myers is headed to BAL. Then SD could easily handle the $10.5M arb salary for Villar and then offset Myers additional salary with some prospects going back.

Best chance on Villar is for him to clear waivers (very good chance at $10MM+ via arbitration) and negotiate against what should be a very limited number of teams looking for a 2B and willing to pay a decent price.

Not sure what Dickerson / Kirby / Machado think of him (bet they are being asked by Preller) but if the like him they may help getting him signed ... or not.

Padres might have an advantage by going on a 2 year deal ... I know he had a very good 2019 but an up and down career and maybe closer to a 1 WAR guy than a 4 WAR guy and unless the 2B is proven elite ... few will pay big money for just a good 2B. Not a $10MM AAV player ... currently at about $5MM ... maybe $7-8MM?
