Quote from JasonE135 on November 19, 2019, 11:14 amQuote from fenn68 on November 19, 2019, 10:36 amAt the risk of being a heretic .... I would not force a Myers trade if it required taking on any bad contract or cost any of the better prospects. Hold ... let him try to rebound (and at least recuse this contract liability for a future deal). Not as though the Padres will take over the LAD in 2020.
IF Preller is hitting a logjam on moving Myers ... might move to marketing Margot (seems to be a number of teams needed a legit defensive CF) and maybe Renfroe if they come up with a regular LHH RF (no platoon) ... sounds like the seeds of a NYM Conforto deal. Gamble on an early arrival of Trammell ... signing of Akiyama ... or horrors of horrors ... let Myers play CF in the interim.
Just don’t panic and make the going forward path worse by forcing a Myers deal ... still should be an overpaid 1 WAR player.
The Mets are one of the teams looking for a CF. I can see the possibility of us trading Margot to them, plus a second tier prospect or two, for Conforto. I know they are looking for RHH. I am just a little worried that that would leave us in the same situation they are in: not having a true CF. I know Conforto would seriously help us against RHP, but we would have to rely on Cordero for CF. We cannot expect a rebound from Myers if he is trying to play CF. He is just not cut out for it. That being said, I would love to do that trade, take the risk and look to the future.
I agree that we should not be giving up any premium prospects to get rid of Myers. Premium prospects don't grow on trees. How long have we been waiting for a homegrown ACE? Since Jake Peavy? We have two possible candidates in Gore and Patino. How about a two-way catcher or a true CF? We finally got ourselves a monster SS that we have been looking for since Khalil Greene. I bet there were a few people on this site who would have been willing to trade him for Syndergaard before last year. Let's not trade our future before it gets here.
If it takes major prospects to get rid of Myers then we should keep him. We could always trade Renfroe who still has value. Plus defense, cannon arm and I can see him hitting 40 HR easily in another ballpark. I wouldn't want to sell him cheap either, but I can definitely see teams being interested. He could be replaced with Conforto or, if we cannot get Conforto, we could sign Dickerson and put Myers in RF. We have endless options.
All we need is for Preller to make sure he doesn't buy high or sell low.

Quote from fenn68 on November 19, 2019, 12:49 pmThe openings on the 40 man are interesting ... not knowing who they add to protect ... but the teams with > 5 open slots are contenders (or think they are) except for DET and CWS. So not likely to take (and keep) a Rule 5 if they want a 2020 competitive roster. On the other hand, a very good chance they scan the DFA players and make waiver claims.
The poorer teams seem to have fuller roster (but likely full with poorer players) so making a waiver claim and dump their own players would also be likely. Also, after seeing who is not protected ... they may dump some to open a slot for a Rule 5 pick.
On the trade front ... the contenders might not be really into trading 1 good player for multiple lesser players (for 2020). Might consider a very good prospect for multiple pieces (a la Trammell). Padres could follow that route again to open some slots.
The non contenders ... if they have someone the Padres want ... are probably the best trade partners at this point in the winter .... Detroit (7 open slots), CWS (7 open slots), Seattle - Miami - Baltimore all have 5 open slots.

Quote from Brian Connelly on November 19, 2019, 1:29 pmYeah, in general, the tighter the team's 40-man roster, the fewer guys they "need" to add from their top 3o.
The 5 teams with full 40-man (Pads, Giants, A's, Blue Jays, Royals) have from 1 - 4 guys in their top 30 that are Rule 5 eligible. Along with the Pirates with only 1 spot open, this includes 4 of last year's 10 worst teams.
But per writer, only 0-1 on each team (2-Pirates) that is a "no brainer to protect". For example, this includes Buddy Reed on Pads, who I don't rate that high. Of course doesn't delve below top 30 either.
Also, presumably all of these teams had very few true Free Agents, like us with just Stammen, vs. teams with lots of roster spots but also lots of FA like Nationals.
It will be interesting to see how it looks tomorrow after guys are added. Remember that Deadline for Non-tendering guys (typically Arb eligible, but sometimes minimum salary too) OPENING roster spots happens right before the R5 draft, not tomorrow.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 19, 2019, 2:34 pmHow about the Jon Gray rumors?
Hedges/Quantrill for Gray?
IMO this is a good deal both ways.
Col gets a defensive wizard at C to work/platoon with Wolters and his offense should tick up in Coors.
They also get 4 years of quality #3-#5 starter.
We also open up one 40 man spot.
My guess is we would have to add another lower level prospect but I would get this done.
I’d rather work a deal involving Myers...he LOVES Colorado.

Myers in Colorado =$300 mil... .356/.410/.667 lifetime .. He would be a "False God" like Blackmon... 😆
I do love the Gray trade..his analytics are actually = if not > Cole's at similar stages in their careers.. Not saying Gray would be Cole like after we acquire him ..but for that package he just needs to be Gray... But love the "if"

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 19, 2019, 3:31 pmSpeaking of Blacmon and his .745 OPS on the road... Myers for Blackmon swap pretty fair deal simce Myers will likely be 4 WAR player at Col..and win a batting title with hia gawdy #s at Coors... Of anything we get a lefty handed Myers which balances the lineup.. If he learns how to be .800 + at Petco then it would be a + for SDP.. A gamble I would welcome and definitely a better OBP guy

I think it would at least have to be Lucchesi+Hedges. Quantrill definitely has value, but he is a #4 fully developed. Not sure what Hedges value is right now. Is his defense that much better than the 2nd half of the catching tandem would be in COL if the Rocks just signed a defensive specialist FA catcher? I mean both sides of ball for Hedges vs hypothetical other good D, poor hit option where Rockies get to keep Gray or move in another deal?
I'd definitely do your proposed deal of course. I have been bullish on Gray for two years now. I'd also do the deal with Lucchesi in it. I do highly value Joey in the short term for SD however. He is the best bet to log 200 quality IP next two seasons of the guys currently on the roster.
I'd take Blackmon for LF and hit him leadoff. Money might have to go back as I believe Myers is owed more. Blackmon better performance, but Wil much younger. Still have to figure out something in CF though. Roll the dice with Margot? JBJ platoon?

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 19, 2019, 5:49 pmBlackmon is owed more I believe
In any case -- Morosi reporting Cubs and Padres as the 2 teams "ramping" things up with Rockies for Gray
Also reports-- Twins/Padres/Angeles and WhiteSox as early favorites in on Wheeler..
Gray + Wheeler is like Cole and Strasburg circa 2-3 yrs ago.. age wise and career path wise.. we could really hit a HR here

200 innings ain't what it used to be... Strasburg led the NL in IP in 2019.. with 209.... very few went over 200... 180 seems to be the new "inning eater" treshold

Only 15 Pitchers went 200+ Innings in 2019
Only 33 went over 180 IP in 2019
