Trade ideas
Quote from MrPadre19 on November 10, 2019, 2:38 pmWell people were throwing around the Betts idea,
Better player....but higher cost.
But I agree......2-3 year players are all I really want to risk losing top prospects over.

Quote from fenn68 on November 10, 2019, 2:51 pmNo to one year rentals at big dollars and giving good prospects if you need to spend big dollars to sign FA and need those prospects to land longer term value ... so no to Betts - to Villar - to Springer - no to Bradley. (I will be a bit surprised if any of them get dealt with their contracts / 1 year control unless it is to a legit contender with an urgent need)
Use the money and trade chips for longer term value .... not going to contend in 2020 anyway and really don’t want a 2015 repeat of a failed shot followed in 2021 with the start of a minor rebuild.
Still of the opinion if they want to deal Myers ... cannot ask for any value in return so as to minimize the added pieces going with him to clear his contract. Can burn too many trade chips in one deal when there is a lot of upgrades to be had. The trade value of Myers to the Padres is freeing up the payroll space for key FA signings.
Actually I am OK with Myers (not his contract) as a gamble he rebounds BUT that forces me to deal Renfroe to open a corner slot for that LHH (e.g. Dickerson) to balance the line-up. Still that shorts the payroll if they really pursue Cole or Strasburg. Not much CF on the open market that can be relied upon to be better overall than Margot so boxing the team into Myers - Margot - Renfroe again as the base with some platoon options ... sort of a redo of one of the worst offensive OF.
If you platoon Renfroe he is only playing 25% of the time ... and a bit worried his swing / approach will not hold up with such limited work ... so is he worth keeping (given his contract) for limited playing time? If you sign Dickerson ... he is effective v LHP and RHP so should be full-time.
I am more inclined to cut bait on both Myers and Renfroe to clear payroll at the cost of prospects ... reset the base and try for a more productive with the money used for new adds. Keep the OF cost down as low as possible while making the big play for Cole or Strasburg.
As for a home for Myers ... Baltimore may be a player (but after Davis and Trumbo may a bit wary of big contracts and usually pretty tight on money and making deals) ... I was thinking Detroit ... a very bad team with a poor farm system BUT with resources and only a $90MM payroll for 2020 with Zimmerman at $25MM dropping off after the season as a FA. (Note they are stuck with Cabrera at $30MM for a long time). They really could handle Myers contract going forward and desperately need an infusion of talent. As with Baltimore ... volume of very good prospects (not the elite) might just get it done ... just don’t ask for the top players as part of the deal or that will kill it. Remember Preller has been trying to move Myers since last winter ... wanting a return and gets on traction ... has not gotten better.

Quote from Brian Connelly on November 11, 2019, 8:40 amQuote from fenn68 on November 10, 2019, 8:20 amIF the Padres will be making a legit pursuit of Cole / Strasburg at at least $30MM/year AND want to upgrade the OF with let’s say Dickerson and Akiyama ... another $10MM or so, the should the Padres be more aggressive in deleting some of their above minimum contracts to ensure the flexibility to cover those FA deals?
Myers to be sure. So how much in trade assets would it take to get some team to take Myers (and his full contract)? We may be over Myers but his is still likely a 1 WAR player so not without some value to the buyer. Preller is not going to use his elite prospect core but he does have a lot of next level ML/MiL talent to replenish some team’s system with ML potential ... basically they are buying prospects. Note: based on the return being a PTNL type ... no talent.
If that could be achieved first .... then more flexibility on both the FA signings and the need to deal Renfroe or Hedges or Margot or Garcia to shave more off the payroll.
Not sure what they would have to add to Kinsler for someone to take his contract ... same idea of the return being a PTNL level. So who wants to buy one of the Padres prospects worth about $4MM?
Clean the house before you bring in Sthe new furniture ... if you can.
An established rising MLB player, esp SP, has more value than all but the most very elite prospects as a MONEY-CENTERED trade chip, due to the uncertainty factor being removed; teams know what they are getting as a baseline & can have their own opinion about future upside. The perfect example of this is valuing Joey Lucchesi vs. Michel Baez:
Lucchessi "only" has 4 years control left; 1 min salary + 3 arb. He was never a top 100 prospect, MAYBE in 100-200 range. My valuation is that he's a very good #4 SP. The limitations on his velocity/stuff make him at very best a #3. He's had significant issues getting deep in games.
Baez has 6 years of control left; has made it to MLB, was as high as a top 50 prospect, huge frame, big FB velocity, optimistically but not unrealistically "could" be in the top (i.e. #2-3) of a rotation. But because of questions about his health & development, he is "worth" in $$ less than Lucchessi even though at similar stage in Minors he is/was a "better" prospect.
I proposed both of these guys in a trade with Myers to max return, which I estimated at acquiring team paying 45 MM total. Simplistic breakdown was: 30 MM for 3 years of Myers creating significant but (to Pads IF they sign an ELITE SP) affordable discount cost/valuation of: "only" 15 MM for 4 years of Lucchesi (remember, buyer has to pay for the arb years, so cost will rise) and 6 years of Baez. 15 MM value for those 2 players may be a little low, but don't think it's wildly off, and the entire crux of the deal is someone has to agree to take Myers (Buyer has leverage).
It would be EXTREMELY inefficient to include only prospects along with Myers; just not going to get enough $$ return for them to significantly move the $$$ received from Buying team in the right direction.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 11, 2019, 8:52 amQuote from David Nevin on November 10, 2019, 1:53 pmSo a story about the Astros possibly making some deals to lower payroll have surfaced.
Mentioned George Springer?
Also mentioned they need a Catcher and a Starter(to replace Cole).
But Springer is just a one year rental but could he be had for a deal surrounding Hedges and Lucchesi?
Obviously would have to include more but should we consider a move like this ala the Betts idea?
Or should we stay away from any one year rental ideas?
I wouldnt close the door on 1 yr rentals -- especially a Springer type, who maybe open to an extension vs arb..He will be 31 to start 2021 and wont be a Bank breaker but wont be cheap $25mil AAV.. he is probably getting $19 mil in arb 3.. so add 3 yrs and make it 4yrs/100 type of extension-- I think he takes that,,,
But back to my point on ONE YR rentals... I would be ok with 2 or 3 specs for a 1 yr rental -- just not CJ/Gore/Tammel/Campusano or Patino..... I mean Edwards + Weathers + Ornelas for Betts i am ok with.. ONLY if Betts is that piece that "compktes us"... example we ONLY trade for Betts and thats it as far as major adds = JUST SAY NO... But we go out and sign Starsburg + trade for Marte then YES bring me 1 yr BETTS at a "Goldschdmit" type price

Quote from BoosterSD on November 11, 2019, 8:54 amYou would think that each buying team would have certain prospects in the SD system that they would covet over others. Meaning, what DET might want from SD, could differ from what BAL might want in order to take Myers off our hands.
And as MrP mentioned in an earlier post, many rebuilding teams to a different extent will get pressure from MLB and more importantly from the MLBPA to keep some resemblance of ML talent on a team during the rebuild. So while DET might not get as much pressure from the MLBPA due to them having Miggy on the team. BAL, if they were to trade Mancini, Givens, and Villar, could get more pressure despite having Crash Davis on their payroll. So that could also play into the GMs of some teams thinking.
The unfortunate part of Myers and trading him to a younger/rebuilding team, is his reputation of not being "the guy". Whereas Hosmer, while maybe not performing to what we want in SD, does have the reputation of being that great clubhouse guy.

So the rumor I saw was Mazara and Hernandez for Luchessi and Blake. Kind of a trade of our surplus for their surplus. So when someone suggested adding the Myers and Odor component, how did they suggest the money would play out?
Myers is owed $68.5M, and Odor is owed $37M, that includes the buyouts for both in 2023. I dont think TEX is going to take on $31.5M for Blake and Luchessi. So is SD including some money to offset the difference in Myers and Odor? Or is SD going to include additional prospects to offset some of the money?
To me the deal made some sense prior to the inclusion of Myers and Odor. Now it doesnt seem to make sense for TEX.
If I were TEX, I would suggest Myers, Urias, Luchessi, and Blake with $15M in cash for Odor, Mazara, and Hernandez.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 11, 2019, 1:35 pmIs Mazara a good enough upgrade over what we already have?
IMO he isn't.
Unless he is a pure platoon player and never sees a lefthander....and if that's the case, how much are we willing to give up?
I hope we exhaust ever avenue to get a hitter who can play everyday and not have to split time due to ineffectiveness vs. same handed pitching.
Once again the biggest reason I would like to go after Mancini.
Maybe his defense isn't as bad as it seems?
