Quote from 3fingersplit on October 26, 2019, 3:52 pmNaylor is a terrible outfielder.....period but lets trade Hosmer so this guy can play 1st base and then we can see just how bad he is there also. Those of you that really think that Naylor and Cordero are the future of this team and oh so willing to blow out Urias are smoking dope. Put the pipe down and say no to drugs

I didn't see anyone mention Cordero. I know his bat does not have the consistency required to be an impact player. Naylor, however, still has plenty of promise and has shown an effective bat and the ability to put up good at-bats on a regular basis. I do not think that Hosmer has a terrible bat, but it is below average and lacking in the power expected from a 1B. I do think Naylor will turn out to have a better bat that Hosmer from this point on. And by the way, I am a huge Urias fan and wouldn't trade him for anything less than a star.

Quote from fenn68 on October 27, 2019, 6:07 amIn an effort to get more offense ... part of the equation is to drop the current players dragging it down (even at the cost of defense). Using OBP as the cut point ... in 2019 the following need to be culled as the lowest on the team:
.252 Hedges
.278 Kinsler
.289 Renfroe
.294 France
That sets up the starters as:
.316 Mejia
.310 Hosmer
.329 Urias
.379 Tatis
.334 Machado
.321 Myers
.304 Margot
.315 Naylor
Frankly if they get rid of the sub 300 players ... bet the others get better by being surrounded by better hitters. Padres then focus on upgrading from that new baseline.

Quote from fenn68 on October 27, 2019, 6:14 amNote on Urias’ development:
079/300/197 (JUL)
238/330/338 (AUG)
300/371/425 (SEP)
For a 22 year old rookie ... nice development to the ML level and for me has shown enough (along with this defense) to justify starting the season over the other options of Kinsler / Garcia. Plus not worth using trade chips to upgrade 2B when the greater needs are OF/SP.

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 27, 2019, 11:36 amQuote from WindsorUK on October 26, 2019, 1:51 pmI've said it before ( and been shot down!) but is their any way the team is looking to move Hosmer?
I imagine there are only a few untouchables ( Tatis, Paddock, Machado).
Eric was brought in to play stellar defense ( which he hasn't) and be a clubhouse guy( not sure?). Offensively, he did okay this year. But I'm thinking the Pads would rather haver Naylor there( kids gonna hit! John Kruk comparison anyone?)
Any chance the team takes a bad deal to move him? I know Eric isn't the problem but I'd hate to give up on Naylor just because he doesn't have a position defensively?
Would Hosmer have much of a market? I know he's up for big bucks soon( this year?) but he also has an out soon, right? Maybe he goes to a hitter friendly park, puts up huge numbers, then opts out for one more big deal?
I know it's neither probable nor likely, but I hope the team is looking at EVERY avenue in order to improve. I'm tired of losing( I'm also still a Charger fan.....I can't take much more!)
Hosmer has 1 more year of a full no-trade, after that it becomes a limited no-trade

Better off with Naylor ... Mazara is a terrible fielder who has not developed as hoped as a hitter ... at least Naylor still has upside.

I am not excited about Mazara. He has below average defense and arm. I guess management could hope for a breakout. I mean he is young enough and he did show some signs of it at the end of the year, but really it would just be taking a flyer. He is a remarkably consistent hitter. You can count on a .260/.320, 20HR year from him. He could be a decent platoon player with Renfroe since Mazara hits much better against right-handers, but with his defensive limitations and Naylor already on the roster I can't see him being worth any good trade piece.

Going to be hard to trade Hosmer unless he returns to his KC form given his contract. Best chance may be if he has strong 2020 and 2021 and move him the following winter (or 2022 trade deadline) before the 5-10 rights kick in and he is only owed $39MM for his final three years. Also, by then their may be factors from the new CBA.
At this point the Padres would have to eat salary / add prospects to move him (if he agreed) and Padres will just hurt themselves if they have to take that approach with Hosmer AND Myers.
Yes Hosmer is underperforming expectations from his KC performance and is overpaid for the results ... but with all the greater issues (e.g. OF/SP) ... and a near term desire to contend can’t create another hole and make the problem worse.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 27, 2019, 4:32 pmMazara (career vs RHP) .271/.337/.462 .799 OPS 112 OPS +..... lets just say he is terrible vs lefties (63 OPS+)
Renfroe (career vs LHP) .269/.345/.579 .924 OPS 135 OPS + .... (he sucks (a bit less) vs RHP (82 OPS +)
That Platoon works extremely well for Padres... they are almost the same player vs the opposite side with Renfroe having more Power (at the moment, but Mazara's Power could still flourish only 24)...
Why I like this idea-- cost (besides a couple 10-15 prospects to acquire him) their salary combined for 2020 will be < $5mil and would form a very nice LF or RF duo... Renfroe could be a late inning defensive replacement /PH... also can PH in a key game on the line situation vs either RHP or LHP with his game changing Power... Padres could maximize their RHP/LHP splits and both Renfroe and Mazara have steadily improved vs the other side throughout their careers, although not to the level I feel comfortable with either ... Mazar's OPS has also been .739/.745/.753/.786... improving yr in and yr out from 21-24 yr old... Through less at bats than Yelich (also age 21-24) Mazara has almost 2X's as many HRs -- 79 to 41 vs Yelich.. and aside from Yelich's superior OBP.. Yelich (.766/.764/.782.. before breaking out at 24 .859 and coming down to earth a bit .807 at 25) OPS bares a little resemblance to Mazara... could Mazara at 24-25 take the next step top .825-.830 OPS I think AJP and Tingler know the answer or at least the projected answer better than I do-- but if they think they can, cost and timing might be perfect to make a move on him
