Trade ideas
Quote from JasonE135 on October 26, 2019, 11:53 amI love Merrifield. He is exactly the kind of player we need. I don't see Myers going in that trade. I doubt K.C. wants anything to do with him and this trade would make it impossible for us to ever get rid of that money. Lose Myers and Kennedy and this trade is pretty viable. I just don't know that K.C. would be willing to lose the man who is, right now, the face of the franchise.

Quote from fenn68 on October 26, 2019, 12:17 pmCouple of thoughts:
1. I think KC is in the midst of being sold and even dragging on the hire of a new manager ... don’t think they are currently motivated to make any big move.
2. Kennedy was a bust of a signing by KC ... BUT ... in 2019 as a RP he did get them a 1.4 WAR with an ERA in the mid-3s ... so not vastly overpaid in 2019 and in 2020 (his last contract year) his is “only” owed $16.5MM.
3. Not sure the desire to move Urias ... top prospect ... just 22 ... and looking at his “development” in 2019 Jul vs Aug vs Sept (Sept was very good for a 2B with quality defense). Better risk to begin 2020 with Urias and bet on him being closer to his Sept performance than just tossing him as a secondary trade chip. That also allows for Edwards to prove his worth in AA and insert his name into the 2B discussion for 2021. Frankly if the Padres appear to be bailing on Urias .... hard to imagine that another team would look on that a major selling point of his trade value.
4, Would love to get Merrifield ... for the OF. May not be great defensively but good enough given his offensive skills. With KC ... maybe more of a prospect based package of 3 works since they are not near competing ... but if I am the Padres probably would not wait for KC to get their organization together and start making moves if the Padres need to use those trade chips in another deal. Side note: although Merrifield’s stats are still good in some analysis there are some indication of decline at age 30ish ... not a big risk given his contract but much would depend on the pieces given.

Quote from fenn68 on October 26, 2019, 12:48 pmAlthough I would like to move Myers ... he does have some value ... and just eating a major piece of his contract and/or dealing top level prospects may not help the team all that much.
Then add trying to move Myers and in the same trade get a major quality piece in return make it almost impossible to find a trade partner willing to take Myers bad contract and give up a quality player without asking for multiple elite pieces from the Padres. Most teams that have a quality player to deal could probably get a good return from a lot of other teams without dealing with Myers.
Do think the Padres need to make the call on what it is worth to move on from Myers the player or just Myers’ contract. The choice sets up different trades. IF they want to move on from Myers the player ... just eat a lot of his contract and give very little in terms of prospects. IF they want to clear the contract liability ... better be prepared to deal significantly better prospects.
Since Myers is owed $61MM over the next 3 years ... is maybe a 1 WAR player (which can be achieve by other teams via much lower cost / commitment to a FA, a different trade, or even a prospect) ... and the Padres have been unsuccessful in their reported efforts to deal him since last winter ... their likely is a zero market.
I would “ask” others for their interest in Myers but not make that a focus this winter. No team is going to take his contract and moving just a still small piece of that contract is not worth the prospects that would have to be included who could be better used to add some quality key player.
Odds are that the starting LF in 2020 is Myers (hopefully with a bit of a statistical rebound) ... basically they should conclude it is more costly to move him than to keep him.

Quote from WindsorUK on October 26, 2019, 1:51 pmI've said it before ( and been shot down!) but is their any way the team is looking to move Hosmer?
I imagine there are only a few untouchables ( Tatis, Paddock, Machado).
Eric was brought in to play stellar defense ( which he hasn't) and be a clubhouse guy( not sure?). Offensively, he did okay this year. But I'm thinking the Pads would rather haver Naylor there( kids gonna hit! John Kruk comparison anyone?)
Any chance the team takes a bad deal to move him? I know Eric isn't the problem but I'd hate to give up on Naylor just because he doesn't have a position defensively?
Would Hosmer have much of a market? I know he's up for big bucks soon( this year?) but he also has an out soon, right? Maybe he goes to a hitter friendly park, puts up huge numbers, then opts out for one more big deal?
I know it's neither probable nor likely, but I hope the team is looking at EVERY avenue in order to improve. I'm tired of losing( I'm also still a Charger fan.....I can't take much more!)

What do Myers 2019 numbers come out to if he'd played 162 games? I realize they're not going to be a $20 million player numbers but they won't be that bad, right? And that's with management pulling him in and out on an almost weekly basis. Kids obviously fragile mentally, all the shuffling up and down, and in and out of the lineup.
If Tingler is smart, he'll pencil Wil into LF, batting 5th for 162 next year( that is if AJ doesn't shift him)

The team would love to move Hosmer I am sure. The problem is that there is an endless supply of 1B. It is where every team puts the guys who can hit but cannot play defense. Basically every player that can hit is a candidate for 1B if their defense gets too bad for them to play anywhere else. So there are endless options. Nobody wants one who is overpaid, gives you average(at best) offense and bad defense. Looks like we are stuck with him. Like you I would love to turn 1B over to Naylor but we would probably have to give up more prospect capital to move him than to move Myers.

yup Tingler a Genious
but in all sincerity just messing around a bit in good fun since we are all looking at walls waiting for paint to dry, before the offseason kicks in high gear in about 10 days

He has been big bucks since hes been in SD. $20M per year until after the 2022 season ends. Plus, Hosmer has full no trade rights negotiated into the contract, until after the 2020 season, which at that time he gets no trade rights due to being a 5/10 guy. And yes, he does have an opt out after the 2022 season, when he drops to $13M per season, but wont be worth that either, so you will see Hosmer in SD brown, until the end of 2025.
So, in order to trade Hosmer, you will have to attach money or prospects to go with him (lack of power for 1B), and get him to waive his no trade clause, aint gonna happen IMO.
And really, while he only hit 22 HRs, he did drive in 99 runs, with another 29 doubles. The average and OBP are still under what he is known, but with a kick in the ass from the right manager (probably not Tingler though) his defense and OBP can get right back in place.
