Trade ideas for 2019

PreviousPage 8 of 36Next

My thought is that PHI would want Margot more than Myers. They have other players similar to Myers that can cover CF, but not play a high level CF. Margot's poultry offense can be handled by the PHI lineup and his defense would be a huge plus to PHI's play off success IMO.

I do like the idea of trying to connect Myers contract to Yates, dont think PHI is the option. As they already have a player similar to Myers in Kingery, who is actually listed as a CFer.

FENN... off the ledge! WHERE is the gloom & doom coming from? Have an IPA or Old Vine Zin...

1)  Urias    IN PCL Urias the #3 2B / #21 overall prospect  is: #6 BA, #3 OBP, and #4 Slug/OPS (behind two 1B & by .001 a LF).   His #'s are extremely similar to, but significantly better than (esp BB=OBP & lower K's) the next 2 hitters in the PCL:  Keston Hiura the MLB #2 2B / #12 overall,  and Brendan Rogers the #1 "2B" / #7 overall...  what else is it you want him to do?  Literally no one else close in the Minors could be called "better" than Urias at the position.  Doesn't mean he'll succeed in MLB, but it does mean he's the best bet.

He's also proven in Minors that he's SS & 3B capable; which allows him to potentially be "the" fill in for Machado or Tatis if hurt.  Finally, his overriding trait reported multiple times by Madfriars throughout the years is his ability to hit the fastball!  On the day he went from A+ to AA I thought he was "most likely to succeed" on the Farm, b/c AA is where the premier SP prospects & their velocity go.  On the other hand, when he moved up to AAA I thought 'this is where HE might face his biggest challenge; learning to handle all the offspeed stuff crafty experienced P's with 89-91 FB throw.  With over 600 AB in past year & a half where he had to overcome missing late Fall + all Winter with the hamstring injury, he is as ready as he'll ever be, and his arrival for good is imminent.   As previously posted, Pads need to survive this last stretch with 6 SP/deep pen.  Then can move to 12 P temporarily & ultimately look to maybe trade Kinsler near deadline.

My only 2 caveats with Urias are:  1)  Are his power #'s in the PCL an illusion &/or actually detrimental?  His Slug is 230 pts better than last yr @ El Paso.  seems great, but I worry he's adjusting his swing too much for power, which is NOT what we need him to do in MLB.  2)  I believe there are 3 "no touch" in trade guys on team/Farm:  Tatis, Gore, & Paddack.  I would put Urias at the very top of the next 3 (he, Strahm, Mejia).  Re what Tony Gwynn Jr said:  I agree Pads should look to improve the MLB team.  This means trading combo of positions of MLB strength/depth (OF, "SP") AND/OR Top 100 prospect/s.  As agonizing as it is to consider trading Urias who seems like EXACTLY what the OBP  challenged Pads need, it does have to be said that 2B is easier to find than many other positions, and with SS & 3B looking "set" for at least 5 years, 2B options in system look extremely deep.

So I would consider trading Urias (or Strahm or Mejia) ONLY for an established 2+ year control MLB "star" quality:  SP, CF or C.  Hang up the phone if Urias demanded for Stroman, Trevor Bauer (1+ year) etc.

My only concern with Urias, and maybe why SD hasnt called him up yet, is what level of pitcher is he doing what against. Meaning, if he is facing a top high level prospect, are those the nights where is going 1-4 and striking out once or twice. And the nights he pops one and goes 3-5, is that against the proverbial AAAA player? Since I dont follow the Chihuahua games that closely, I would need someone else to answer that. However, it could be the reason of SD delaying his recall.

FENN... cntd...

2)  Cordero    ....May ultimately "fail" as a prospect, but very close to already a floor as a MLB 4th/5th OF as LH CF capable with speed & major power.  Cordero feels like he's been around forever (because he has been - signed 2011!) but say this out loud a few times:  Cordero is the same age right now that Hunter Renfroe was WHEN HE DEBUTED in MLB!  On the other hand, Franchy is a year older than Franmil...

... which points out the simple fact that injuries have just massively set him back.  But he's nowhere near the point where you give up on him.  "Just" needs to get & stay healthy &  PLAY.  NO ONE in Pads system NEEDS to play Winter Ball as much as he does to come into ST strong.  Also, not sure about that characterization of him being a "poor defender"... my recollection was that he very quickly adapted to OF & got to MLB more quickly than expected when he was moved off SS.  Think they're asking a lot of him to play all 3 positions, especially CF, but makes sense with his speed....

... so it's Hard to be patient, but that's simply what's required: eventually option him down & just let him play every day to see if he can get back to the 2016 version of himself in AAA...

You guys are being too impatient waiting for our 2 injured LH CF to return...

Unless I'm missing something on Inciarte... Massive year over year drop in all offensive #'s 2 years running in a hitter's park.

Bad Caught stealing % his entire career except rookie year:  >31%.

"18" MM for 2.5 years of elite defender 28 y.o. that looks like a platoon guy offensively at this point?   A month after the trade (a month from now, so i.e.   in 2 months) we'll have 1 or 2 other similar LH OF in MLB requiring a subsequent trade...  Hard pass

Im guessing that you are referring to Jank and Cordero. If that is the case, I dont see Cordero as a CF, more a RF that can play CF for a few days if the true CF is down. In Jank, love the defense, confused by the bat. His speed is really good, but like many now, doesnt want to play the Willie Mays Hayes route and use his legs to get on base. And his splits are really bad against LHP so he is truly a platoon guy in that aspect of his game. Although for the last year or so, I have said that a Jank/Margot is a good platoon. Margot seems determined to prove me wrong on that point though.

Still trying not to be too delusional in trying to deal Myers (and his contract). So, trying a different trade partner but again with Yates attached .... but this will require a bit of a performance rebound by WASH ... they are playing better and have the SP to not only thrust themselves into the WC picture but maybe even into the NL East run in 2019 and still be relevant in 2020.

Picking up Yates (they are truly bad in the pen) and Myers (Zimmerman even when healthy is suffering at the plate / 1B) could actually use both at a 2019 very low cost. Then in 2020 when Myers jumps to $20MM and Yates in arb. should push $10MM ... WASH is dropping a lot of FA and declined club options including big contracts with Rendon, Zimmerman, Dozier, ... basically way more than Yates / Myers and potentially room to still resign Rendon (but they may take the Harper route and just pass on a long term $30MM commitment).

IF the Padres are willing to focus on clearing payroll for future FA signings or high cost trade opportunities .... might be OK with a few distant prospects just to clear Myers salary.

IF the Padres want to be a real contender going forward ... they do need a proven quality ML CF. Does not have to be Mike Trout but should be legit talent. I just am dubious of reliance on any of the current in house options.

1. Myers (sadly the incumbent): bad defensively and frustrating offensively with low BA and inconsistent SLG supported by a high K%.

2. Margot (fading prospect): progression from a good encouraging rookie season to a noticeable regression last season to ... whew an ugly 2019 with zero offense and almost complete inability to take a walk

3. Jankowski (injured ... again): elite defensively but maybe only better than Billy Hamilton offensively ... and that is bad. Hot streaks but then really bad streaks. Nice defensive 4th-5th OF / PR at best.

4. Cordero (not ready prospect ... if he ever will be ready): not really a CF defensively and actually not all that great defensively at the corners. Yes, massive power when he hit the ball but his entire minor league career was marred by a very high K% and inability to hit LHP. Maybe a platoon corner OF on a second division team.

5. Gettys (AAA can't hit) ... Reed (AA can't hit) ... Oliveras (AA maybe can hit but not sure about CF) ... JRosario (A+ is a TBD but long way off ... 3 years or so).

So not seeing much in the way of a quality CF for a ML club that has its eyes on being a contender in 2020-2022. Need to add some level of ML competence.

===

That was the need ... problem ... having a real real hard time identifying that target CF who might be legitimately available which sort of leads me down the path of seeking improvement even if it is not as high quality as I want.

Maybe we just live with Myers in CF ... at least he is entertaining in his defensive exploits.

Myers is $71M including the balance this season and the buyout. Yates is worth his money. Margot, league minimum. Eaton is $24.5M max and $6M min, based on buyouts. A. Sanchez is $16.5M based on buyouts.

WAS gets OF/1B, stud RP, and defensive CF. SD gets good CF, RHSP (innings & Balsley rebirth), saves $30M in salary, and since we are taking some money back from WAS, better quality prospects. Could work.

Underrating Cordero defensively due to the bad taste he left in the mouth. He had mental lapses on picking up the rollers. He showed significant improvement in route running. Not that it matters much if he's down significantly with the leg.
