Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from BoosterSD on June 12, 2019, 11:44 amBCon, I would agree that if you are trading Yates then you are getting someone really good that can help the MLB team in 2020 and a couple of others that can be high potential prospects farther away. And I agree that we dont need to create new holes, but you also need to know when to sell high. Right now the holes I see in SD are CF, 2B, LH hitting, OBP guys, an ace SP, too many RH Corner OFs, and yes RP.
2B should hopefully be filled by Urias.
Naylor and a healthy productive Cordero will help the RHH heavy line up that we have now. Although I am losing faith in Cordero.
A trade of Renfroe or Myers will fix the RH OFs issue. Renfroe could be with team that has prospects, and Myers would need to be a trade of bad contract for bad contract.
The relief pitching problem IMO is a lack of SP going deep this year. So theoretically 2019 experience should help that issue in 2020. Plus, there are many relievers on the way, they come quicker than SP, and bounce back of Stock and others to help as well.
So that leaves CF, an Ace, and OBP guys to solve. Many times, CFers are OBP guys, and you could send Yates to ATL for Inciarte, and 2 of their younger arms that are abundant in ATL. You could look at WAS and chase Eaton, he is LH, better than Myers in CF, and OB at a 34% clip.
Should make for an interesting July!

Quote from BoosterSD on June 12, 2019, 11:47 amJust as an add, MLB on XM had Jim Bowden and Steve Phillips on this morning. They suggested that Stroman for Renfroe would be a close deal, probably with some add of a mid level prospect to TOR. And that ATL and SD could do a 3 for 1 with Yates to ATL, and Wright/Anderson/ and one other that I can recall to SD.

Interesting thoughts since they are in a sense deals with opposing objectives.
Trade Renfroe for Stroman IF you think they will be in the WC hunt in 2020 (or maybe 2021) ... Stroman is a FA after 2020 and will be making over $10MM in 2020 so only a short term fix and will eat payroll space.
Trade Yates for Wright / Anderson ... two outstanding SP prospects IF you think 2020 contention is a long shot and want more assets for the long term or really believe in Wintenger, Munoz, Castillo, or ? as end of the game arms for 2020.
At least the Yates deal gives Preller more SP assets with our own SP prospects / ML arms to maybe swing a follow-up deal for an impact ML CF - C - 2B. IF Preller could pull that off ... then maybe the Stroman deal makes more sense.
That is A LOT of dominoes to fall the right way to work but does support the idea of being both buy and seller at the same to improve and balance the 25 man roster.

Quote from fenn68 on June 12, 2019, 1:00 pmI too am beginning to worry about the ceiling for Cordero .... yes LHH with awesome power when he makes contact but his current and historic K-rate could limit his future. He is not that good a defender. I could see him hanging around between ML and AAA in 2020 (has the minor league options) unless tossed into a trade.
Gaining concern on Urias getting the sense his ability to consistent handle the good FB at the ML level may be an issue. Could be wrong but. Did hear T.Gwynn, Jr entertaining the inclusion of Urias in a trade for someone. Just the the thought of moving a top prospect from someone close to the organization makes me think some of the upside for Urias has dropped back.
Myers should not be in CF ... Margot seems to have peaked / faded ... Cordero seems falling short .... Jankowski will return with his elite defense but have to remember his offense was not earthshaking .... no impact CF near term in the system. Suggest a CF should be a major target with the bonus of LHH with high OBP. Eaton should be attainable from WASH and is controlled (via club options) through 2021 ... albeit at a hefty price ($9.5MM / 10.5MM). Inciarte from ATL might be harder to get since their prime replacement (Pache) is in AA but he is under control through 2022 and a better defensive option. Both have had injury issues. Maybe a Yates / Margot combo gets Inciarte plus a SP prospect.
Unless the development folks know more ... too early to bail on Urias with no real quality option. Is Miller in AA a potential future option ... he seems to be able to hit (but so did Urias)?
Got to roll the dice on C since not like to find better options for the future on the market. Lets just see the winner among Hedges - Allen - Mejia - Torrens - Campusano. Can't fix all the holes in one bust.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 12, 2019, 1:12 pmI'd be fine with Cordero's K's if it wasn't for the fact that the rest of the lineup "already" has a problem with K's.
We need less.....not more!
Braves seem like a great candidate but I'd prefer Inciarte over more pitching prospects.
I know...you can't have too many good pitchers.....but Inciarte is a Gold Glove CF 3 years running...gets on base...can run...
and doesn't K very much.He hits left handed and is signed through 2022.
Plus the Braves aren't playing him everyday even when healthy.
Lead him off with Tatis hitting 2nd.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 12, 2019, 1:21 pmPlus the Braves have Cristian Pache coming.......who is their top prospect.
I'm guessing we couldn't lure "him" away in a deal for Yates?
Heck...their #5 prospect Drew Waters is 20 and in AA and is also playing CF.
He has really good numbers for a 20 year old.
Dang Braves need to trade us Inciarte!

I would do this Yates trade in a split second.... which means it's a ludicrous proposal.
Last year Pads traded Brad Hand who is LH, bigger body, younger, equally as dominant as Yates AND was under control for 3+ years, AND had to throw in Adam Cimber who was cost effective, good, "different/funky look" RP to that point to get Mejia, who was ranked almost exactly where BOTH Wright & Anderson are (top 30 MLB).... common sense says 1+ years of Yates; value is a lot lower than Hand (+Cimber) was... likely at best one top 50-100 pick.
Not counting Tatis, Jr who has already "graduated" in my book, Padres have 9 in top 100 right now & likely 10 with C.J. Abrams. Trading Yates to get to 11 might have been the right move 2 years ago, but not any more. Focus should be on improving the MLB team.
FWIW the Stroman/Renfroe proposal is much closer to accurate valuation, but could make the argument that 4+ yrs control of Renfroe (he will be a Super 2) vs only 1+ of Stroman that the Pads should be getting the 2nd piece back. Or maybe we include a backfill SP like Margevicius to upgrade to a decent/better prospect back too?

Quote from BoosterSD on June 13, 2019, 10:27 amI go back and forth on what SD should do at the trade deadline. Part of me looks at the team and says, "yeah" we're close. Then you see a series against the LAD or COL, and say "meh" we need more. And I realize more is on the way, but still see big holes and position overlap on this team.
I know 3 team trades are difficult, wonder if there is a way that SD, SF, and PHI could make a deal happen. Maybe something where SD send Myers to SF, SF sends Longoria to PHI, PHI send Franco to SF. SD sends Margot and Lauer/or Luchessi to PHI and SD gets Moniak and Samardzija. Then to cover CF for SD, bring Powell up. Has the D and decent OBP from a LHB. I am sure that there would need to be some additional pieces to balance somethings out. SF gets an OF and saves $10M. PHI gets a true CFer that can live with Margot's offense and a SP that can eat some innings and provide some LHP balance to the PHI RHP heavy line up. SD gets a LH CF prospect, and SP that can eat innings and is RH, and the salary relief from Myers leaving.

If they could pry either Pache or Waters in a deal for Yates ... I would be for it and be willing to wait the extra time until they are ML ready. Doubt they will include them but Inciarte is really a possibility (not having a great season but youngish and has a track record) if the deal included Margot going to them to give them some CF short term options.

Quote from fenn68 on June 13, 2019, 10:56 amThe 2019 Padres are beginning to look to be what we thought they would be at the start of the season ... at best a .500 team building for 2020+.
With that as the reality in my mind .... dealing Yates makes abundant sense if the deal is good for the 2020+ timeline. To that same end, would avoid anyone just controlled for 2020 (e.g. Stroman) or carrying a significant contract ... especially a SP given the fact that Richards will be around in 2020 along with a long list of quality internal arms ... with long innings targets than 2019.
Sort of biased towards a starting CF for 2020+ add and high ceiling prospects ... more pitchers are fine (teams always need SP and either they or the Padres' internal crop can be move to fill future holes). Would not object to additional OF prospects in the upper levels since not much in the system who are living up to expectations.
Yates and Margot to Atlanta for Inciarte and a couple of pitching prospects might be a match. Not sure other contenders who would covet Yates have (or are willing to trade) the desirable return pieces. There will be other RP options in play.
I guess if Preller strategizes multiple moves the immediate return may not be the key but the secondary moves that follow. That could be either other trades or clear payroll space for a FA singing next winter.
IF that is a logic, and I know this is not at all probable, maybe they package Yates with Myers for no significant prospect return but PHIL (who is a contender with a need and money) takes all (or most) of their contracts. Padres would clear about $30MM in 2020 that could be used for a major FA sign (e.g. Cole as a top of the rotation arm) or a big contract trade (e.g. Strasburg).
Preller seems to be keeping the door open to being a "buyer" and a "seller" simultaneously.
