Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2019, 11:03 amPossible?
Cubs just optioned Russell (long over due) but with Zobrist basically injured and out of baseball ... they need some veteran support at 2B. Now they have Garcia (rookie with 39 AB) and Descalso (career utility with a .545 OPS) and could move Bote from 3B as the replacement requiring Bryant to lock in at 3B. However, the way Maddon operates, locking in Bryant at 3B really exposes some OF holes (offensively and defensively).
Add that the Cubs are looking for relief help (LH).
Could this be an opportunity to deal Kinsler (he does give a veteran presence) if coupled with Erlin and not worry about a return piece? Cubs are in a real battle for NL Central lead and even Wild Card. Not sure the Cubs have much to offer to consider an upgraded offer to Kinsler and Strahm (who should have decent value on his own).
Maybe?????

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 24, 2019, 12:49 pmHope you're right on Kinsler/Cubs idea... I almost mentioned him, but think Pads would have to eat almost all the rest of his deal; lucky if new team pays 1 MM or something total. TONS of potentially better, cheaper, & more versatile middle INF to replace him. But no on Strahm... don't trade just to trade.
I find it a LITTLE funny how it's getting represented by Pads / AG that "Kinsler is now going to the role he was intended to always have" ... on the bench. 2/8 MM not really "bench" $? They seem to have forgotten he was signed when our starting 3B was named Villanueva.

Probably the role they intended for him IN JULY 2020 not July 2019.
Also, expect they thought they would get more production out of him in 2019 ... even if he just matched his 2018. Age seems to have really taken over his hitting and defense and he really is not the leader (at least on the field) he was billed to be. Retiring in place? Or is his style just looks unmotivated when compared to the young kids in Tatis, Reyes, Margot, and even veterans Hosmer and Hedges who all seem to enjoy playing the game and helping to up others’ game.
Eating some salary at some point may be fine (dead money) and open a slot for someone like France to be the RH PH off the bench. However, adding a decent but marginal ML talent who has some value and not expecting any real return would get the amount of contract to eat reduced (or eliminated). What is better for the Padres ... saving payroll space or keeping a marginal player with limited long term value?

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 24, 2019, 5:23 pmThen again Urias needs to get a base hit every once in awhile.
It must be in his head at this point.
I know it’s the PCL but hitting .350 all season in AAA and .080 in the majors is more than just a change of level.
They may “want” Urias to play everyday and Kinsler to PH.....but if this keeps up Kinslers’ gonna start getting some starts.

Just maybe the Padres had a valid reason to keep Urias in AAA ... does not look any better as a hitter than at the beginning of the season. Stats are often deceptive in the minors.
Out of contention ... they will still give him a long run but expect Garcia to get the first shot at spelling him (was hitting OK before Urias arrived).
If Urias does not settle in as a hitter ... Kinsler is not the answer for 2020 and likely not Garcia ..... a problem. Might have to experiment with an accelerate Owen Miller sooner than planned.

Quote from fenn68 on July 25, 2019, 8:31 amLooking more and more as though any trade activity (anywhere in MLB) is going down to the wire. Sort of the opposite of what the national reporter types predicted with the new single deadline ... most predicted more activity earlier. Mis-read of GMs?
I guess in part the lack of a lot of high profile players actually being tossed around as “available” ... maybe ... and the playoff potential of a lot of teams might just temper the need (desire) of quick action by the GMs who may be OK with the “hold” strategy.
We still are in the period of all the sellers of top level targets insisting they will not make a move without an overwhelming offer while the buyers are insisting they will not move their elite prospects and are not really that motivated for “rentals” unless on the cheap.
I guess the new single deadline did not change much to change the approach by either side ... I guess we still could see a frenzy after Sunday’s games giving a couple of days to finalize deals but maybe that frenzy is more focused on fringe players as opposed to blockbusters involving impact players.
Better chance to see players like Stammen or Erlin being dealt than a Yates or top prospect. Even then, if the return is barely more than a PTNL/Cash Considerations ... might not be even worth the effort.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 25, 2019, 12:05 pmTony Kemp was just DFA'd by Houston.
A guy I've always coveted.
Can play 2b and OF.
"IF" we could interest the Cubs....or someone,in Kinsler I'd love to find a way to snag Kemp.
He is a great Clubhouse guy from all reports and versatile with speed and some power and still has four years
of control.
While Garcia has been fine Kemp has even more versatility and more potential to still be an everyday starter if given a chance.
Of course....I'm not giving up on Urias but Kemp would help during his growing pains and also improve the bench.
IF we can make room of course.

Quote from fenn68 on July 25, 2019, 12:10 pmWorks for me ....always can make room at this point .... I guess he is out of options so they would have to option or release someone off the 25 man and that may be the harder call at this point.
