Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from MrPadre19 on July 23, 2019, 8:39 pmYeah on MLB XM they were talking about the Padres signing Gerritt Cole as a free agent.
I’m thinking.......with what money?
No way we outbid every other ML team for this guy.
After Hosmer and then Machado and being stuck with Myers.
Ain’t gonna happen.
We need Myers to get serious and find his stick.

They can but the players union would hate them. DL him for mental distress give him 30 days in the minors.

Since he is under a long term contract ... he still would get ML pay so not all that sure the union would care all that much. Getting him some regular AB without the ML consequences seems like a good idea ... so IL to rehab would work .... time for an classic oblique strain?

Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2019, 9:27 pmSince I am on the track of adding an upgrade for a corner OF over everything else but just cannot find any real impact ML corner OF available ... and if I did the price probably would be unreasonable ... tried to re-look at prospect trade options.
First looked at Padre coming attractions in the next two years: Naylor (maybe the bat but not the field); Cordero (big power when he makes contact, high K rate, so-so defense); Olivares (good chance for a 4th OF and maybe emerges as a regular but still a lot to show) ... other than that zip. Need more than that in the pipeline.
Looked at the MLB Top 100 ... edited out the A+ and lower (too far away) and prospects with non-contenders. Came up with two new considerations:
#92 Trevor Larnach (22) LHH (MINN). Just promoted to AA and was the Twins #1 pick (#18 overall) last year. Advance hitter who should move quickly. MINN was identified as a team that may be a good match for Yates. Other than getting a Yates, MINN already has MLB#12 prospect LHH OF Alex Kirilloff in AA. That should make Larnach easier to move.
#87 Dylan Carlson (20) switch hitter (STL). In AA as a 20 year old. STL is seeking a LHRP (see the Strahm note) who may work ... maybe the Padres adding another player (or not).
Just guessing #10 Kyle Tucker (Houston), #12 Alex Kirilloff (MINN), #13 Christian Pache (ATL), #32 Jesus Sanchez (TB), and #43 Drew Waters (ATL) are all out of reach in a Yates trade.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 23, 2019, 9:29 pmMy trade deadline wish list (in a realistic IDEAL outcome)
Trade 1 Yates + Myers + Reyes + Lucchesi to Boston for Benitendi + Casas + (COF with high OBP who is a lefty hitter CHECK) + Porcello (been terrible in 2019 offsets Myers $$ for 2020 this year as he is a pending FA at yrs end) Joey replaces him with equal if not > results... Getting rid of Myers a huge plus.. and financial flex going foward
Trade 2 Urias + Cantillo + Arias to Cleveland BAUER to SDP (TOR SP solved)
Trade 3 Reed + France + Nix + Cordoba to Baltimore for Givens BP (replacement for Yates? solid BP arm check away splits out of this world) get rid of some 40 man roster marginal talent who would fit all in as a young MLB ready chore of players with some upside
Trade 4 Logan Allen + Allen the C + Xavier Edwards For WHIT (got our 2B for the next 1/2 decade at an affordable price and yet another big time OBP stick
Trade 5 Stanmen to NYY/BrewCrew or Braves for a spec or 2 to back fill some of the departures above
After trade
1, tatis SS R
2, Whitt 2B R
3, Machado 3B R
4. Renfroe RF R
5, Hosmer 1B L
6, Benitendi LF L
7, Margot CF R
8, Mejia/Hedges S/R
SP (2020) 1- Bauer/ 2- Gore/3-Paddack/4- Lauer/5- Richards... Lamet/Q/ still around for BP/AAA and Inning limit supplements
BP Givens/Munoz/Baez/Winter is Coming/Castillo/Strahm/Baez (and Pitchers above not in the 5 SP)
All this accomplished by deadline.. leaving the offseason to fine tune a little, maybe upgrade CF but think Margot/Jank/Franchy and Olivares may work out ok... Even if Gore not ready to start 2020 (a la Paddack) still should end up in the rotation at some point.....
Also despite trading some top 10 Prospects in Urias/L Allen and Edwards... team still kept some of the better ones Gore/Patino/Campusano/CJ Abrams/etc... while getting rid of Myers contract

Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2019, 8:10 amWell, that certainly a wish list ... doubt the other teams would be all the interested in making those deals.
A key detriment to the Boston deal is including Myers’ contract. Porcello is owned about $7MM for the rest of 2019 (Myers about $1MM) but he is a FA after the season and Myers will be owed $20MM for the following 3 years plus whatever Yates gets in arbitration for 2020. Then add that Boston is over (way over) the luxury tax threshold (paying a big penalty) the will not take on Myers’ dead money while needing to handle Betts / Bogarts arbs and the need potentially to extend one or both.
Still not sure why adding 1 year of Bauer at about $20MM makes sense for the Padres but makes less sense for the Indians (who can trade him in the winter) while they are sitting in the #1 Wild Card slot for a bundle of distant prospects. Unless they get immediate improvement, they don’t deal Bauer now.
Not enough for Merrifield (but I would like to get him) so not sure the level of upgrade in the offer that would work.
Givens is another I would try to add but so do other teams and are likely offering a at least one more appealing prospect than any of the 4 you list ... all 4 are long long shots. Even with his up / down performance Givens (in the era of needing RP) should get a better return for 2 years and a low cost.
Now since the Padres have assets to deal ... moving on Merrifield and Givens would seem justified and both could be moved by their current teams. No interest in Bauers and Boston is not moving Benitendi (more interested in dumping a slumping Bradley, over paid, and nearing his FA) and he would be the only part of the deal that interests me given they can’t dump Myers’ contract on Boston.

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 24, 2019, 8:50 amWell, pretty clear who's IN & OUT of Wildcard race a week before deadline:
IN: Washington, St. Louis, Philly, Milwaukee, San Fran (sigh), & Arizona.... All within 4 games of each other plus the Cubs.
OUT: PADRES, Colorado, Cincy, Mets, Pittsburgh... All 3-4 games behind Arizona, and 6-8 games < .500
Giants put together the run Padres are clearly capable of, but haven't pulled off at the right time. This year's team clearly has the talent to go on a 8-2 or 9-1 run, so I won't give up till they're mathematically out, but Preller in general should Sell vs Buy
Myers, Yates, & Renfroe or Reyes have been discussed a lot, so won't add more this post.
Team needs are so specific with possible solutions on roster/Farm that I think Pads will mostly sell relatively "low end" players such as Pirela DFA. May as well get something for guys who won't be on roster in 2020. An obvious example is youth movement displaced place-holder Robbie Erlin; could at least save a little $.
The one move I would make would be to trade Stammen. On an "attempting to contend" team he was invaluable for being such a workhorse. But for a team that's "out" with the youth movement underway, he's taking high leverage innings from guys who would really benefit from the experience there & just in MLB in general. Save a little $, get something, he could return as a FA next year.
Of course I'd love to see the right ambitious deal like one of Henry's proposed, but I strongly feel team needs to see what it's got at: C, 2B, CF, and really all P's; especially bullpen, to better evaluate on larger samples true needs headed into next season.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 24, 2019, 9:43 amBenintendi for Yates gaining some traction in many social media outlets from Boston media and fans
My question is 1.5 WAR Benintendi for Yates 2.4 WAR enough of a return for us? In my opinion Benintendi's future projection and control are greater and with Red Sox in it, we would have to add Reyes? perhaps (0.3 WAR) to get it done.. But in order to move Yates (#1 Elite closer in MLB 2019 model) I need a Benintendi, Verdugo, Tucker type in return or NO DEAL... Yates can be our Closer in 2020 and help us #playoffs2020.. So unless is a BIG contributor (or potentially so) for 2020 and beyond JUST SAY NO to less...

Now we just have to get the Boston front office on board .... I could see that deal working for the Padres getting a LHH corner OF with a high OBP would be a good line-up fit.
The WAR now may be different, but Yates is in his 30s with 1 year more of control while Benintendi is 25 with 3 more arbitration years ... longer control has value plus in 2020 should cost less than Yates.
A lot depends on how much Boston values its Wild Card chances and how much it wants to appease it strong fan base. Guessing a couple of other bodies ... maybe going both ways ... would make both sides more comfortable. I could see Boston trying to get Naylor or Reyes included with Benintendi out, they may need another bat (not much in the minors) and in 2020 Moreland and Martinez may be gone opening up 1B/DH. Alternatively, they may want the Padres to take on a some money to lessen the luxury tax penalty.
Do think a potential match is there IF Boston wants to engage seriously.
Side: Benintendi is hitting with a line of 269/350/429 (779 OPS) which is about his career line. The Boston folks seem a bit down on him ... expected more improvement? his K% is up for some reason which adds to the frustration. Padres would be getting a boost to OBP (having one of the worst for OF that is a big plus) by give a bit on SLG (but that is not doing all that much for the Padres in 2019) ... so a good trade off in my mind.

Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2019, 10:51 amAgree on getting what they can for Erlin, Stammen ... and as I suggested before maybe a bit more of a return for a Strahm. Would love if they could move Kinsler for a PTNL/Cash Considerations or even a different questionable contract coming with a player with minor league options. Maybe one of the first three above bundled with Kinsler can get it done and not really worry about the return.
At this stage at 2B ... giving Urias the long look with Garcia as the back-up insurance in the short run ... and if that does not work look to someone like Miller (currently in AA) in mid-2020. Actually, finding "serviceable" 2B at a low cost is not that much a daunting task ... which also creates a low trade value for a Kinsler or Urias.
