Marquez has not started throwing again ... so not soon.
I guess Canning's performance (the last two) put him right in contention with Waldron for who gets DFA'd for Giolito next Sunday.
Note Waldron came in today in relief ... so?

Waldron looks to be the better pitcher at this point....which isn't saying much.

Quote from ultratvfan on May 14, 2026, 1:53 pmCanning's first appearance was solid. But, he has gone down hill from there.
Castellanos could not reach a hit just over his head in RF. A hit that Tatis would have caught. Tatis is valuable in RF.
At least the Padres were not swept. Let's hope the Dodgers lose tonight.
Next up: the Padres head to Seattle.
GO PADRES!

Quote from fenn68 on May 14, 2026, 4:48 pmDid see that Stammen implied that Waldron would be moving to the pen full time as a long option.
So when Giolito is activated he is the 5th SP and apparently Canning remains.
So the odd man out is from the pen? Who given all the out of option arms? Preller working a minor trade?
Looking at the big picture ... can see the logic on holding on to both as SP options. None of the current IL SP appear near to returning (if returning at all this season) ... minors have no current better options ... so I guess it could get a lot worse if any of the current SP options becomes injured near term.

Quote from fenn68 on May 14, 2026, 5:23 pmHopefully the last 7 days are rock bottom for the offense ... collectively horrible. After 43 games still can't come to grips with both the breath and depth of under performance by historically above average hitters.
Can't stay this way ... can it? For reference below are the wRC+ numbers for the core eight we expected at the start of the season:
YTD ... 2025 ... 3 year (2023-2025)
50 ... 77 ... 91 ... Fermin
110 ... 111 ... 90 ... Sheets
48 ... 117 ... 104 ... Cronenworth
121 ... 104 ... 107 ... Bogaerts
81 ... 123 ... 119 ... Machado
95 ... 138 ... 114 ... Laureano
80 ... 110 ... 124 ... Merrill
84 ... 131 ... 125 ... Tatis
Except for Bogaerts and Sheets ... MAJOR under performance for the other six. None are "old" and all have a successful past (recent and multi-year). Have to expect some level of rebound across the board ... hopefully the team's pitching (and come from behind profile) last until that happens.
Get the feeling (hope) that there is a point where all (feeding off each other) start to hit to their histories and that is before the pitching starts to fade.
