San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers: May 12-14

24-16    22-16

Tuesday, May 12 - 4:40pm
RHP Matt Waldron(1-1, 7.71 ERA, 15 K, .308 BAA) vs RHP Brandon Sproat(0-2, 5.87 ERA, 30 K, .264 BAA)

Wednesday, May 13 - 4:40pm
RHP Michael King(3-2, 2.76 ERA, 45 K, .182 BAA) vs RHP Jacob Misiorowski(3-2, 2.45 ERA, 70 K, .162 BAA)

Thursday, May 14 - 10:40am
RHP Griffin Canning(0-1, 6.75 ERA, 12 K, .278 BAA) vs LHP Kyle Harrison(3-1, 2.41 ERA, 41 K, .226 BAA)

The Padres hit the road heading midwest to face the Brewers and then back west to face the Mariners in Seattle. They are currently in a first place tie with the Dodgers, who will come to Petco for a showdown after the Mariners series.

The Brewers have won four in a row and just swept the Yankees. But, in the last two seasons the Padres have won the season series.

The Brewers will have their two best pitchers, Misiorowski and Harrison, in this series. Misiorowski vs King looks like a marquee matchup.

Waldron is coming off his best start of the season giving up 1 run on 2 hits in 5 IP. I hope that he brings that performance into this series. But, I still worry.

Canning is coming off a bad start due to 1 bad inning, in part due to bad defense, allowing 6 runs in 4.1 IP causing his ERA to go up, but has allowed only 1 run in 9.1 innings prior to that.

King has been solid this season, but unfortunately, has not always been getting run support like his last solid start against the Cardinals allowing only 1 run in 6 IP.

Despite the 6 runs given up by Canning in one inning in the Cardinals series, pitching was solid. But, as exciting as the comeback was in game 4, the Padres offense has been anemic. Somebody needs to light fire under these guys. Here is an interesting article on the Padres offense: https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/breaking-down-padres-2026-offensive-start

Waldron has got to go.

Looks like Roster Recourse had the script early ... they have had Giolito starting next Sunday replacing Waldron for the last few days.

If that is the reality ... might see Waldron DFA now and a RP called up until Giolito is added on Sunday.

25% of the season in the rear view mirror and seeing no sign of an offense uptick. Can see that happening for a couple of players but other than Bogaerts it is an issue for everyone ... that is concerning considering the under performance is not "minor" but really dramatic.

Shocking in the past week Castellanos has be the only above average hitter (.308 BA / .846 OPS) and Bogaert was close to average.

However, we saw Machado continued his problems with a 2 for 22 performance (.091 BA / .387 OPS). Nothing still from Tatis and little from Merrill. Added worry is Laureano who was at the top of the offense early in the season but in the past 7 days no hits (.000 BA / .278 OPS) and 7 K in 13 AB.

The only worst hitting team in the past 7 days is AZ. SD was .153 BA / .518 OPS as a team ... truly bad.

Can't really remember such an extended run of extremely poor hitting for a collective set of players with histories of above average hitters ... indeed many recent All-Stars.

Yet, can't forget somehow the team is in 1st place even without a dominant pitching staff. A season of smoke and mirrors? No viable replacement options, so we just have to take the ride.

A Padres team that’s been piecing together its rotation over the course of the season thus far is on the verge of getting some much-needed starting pitching help. Lucas Giolito is expected to make his team debut this weekend, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

You gotta believe at some point hitters will hit, right? I can't remember a time when a teams 3 best hitters all sucked for the first quarter of the season? Anyone find any parallels? Be interesting to know if it has happened, what the final numbers looked like.

Is it possible FTJ hits less than 10 HR's the rest of the way? Is it possible HOF bound Manny F**king Machado hits under .200 the rest of the way? Is it possible Jackson Merrill doesn't go on at least one tear where he carries the team for a short while?

I'm guessing no to all of those so the offence will come around. But as I said before, just hope the SP holds out until the bats arrive.

Go Pads!
