Robert Hassell III

Sac flies and bunts count against OBP, but not AVG. It's possible it's just not real likely over anything other than a small sample size. I've managed it in MLB The Show with a few players since I basically never take walks.

Padres: Robert Hassell III, OF (No. 2MLB No. 35)
The 2020 first-rounder had a strong first season end on a somewhat sour note when he hit just .205 over 18 games with High-A Fort Wayne. He’s responded with a .368/.434/.575 line over 23 games back with the TinCaps this spring. That ability to make adjustments, along with his ability to control the zone and drive balls consistently from the left side, point to why Hassell shows so much promise offensively. The career .313 hitter could improve his ceiling if recent power gains hold deeper into his age-20 season.

Last couple of games Hassell has become too patient, i.e., the Grisham syndrome.  There were many fastballs down the middle early in the count that he should have been able to rope from right to left center but he let them go by.  Looks like he was trying to go too much the other way, which had been successful but teams are starting to pitch him more inside to try to tie him up.  Should be able to get his hands through and start pulling more.  Also, hitting more grounders lately, so needs to up his launch angle slightly.

Two different hands approach to launch angle.......Palm Up, Palm Down or Palm Straight...Hit it Great...Palm to the Sky...Hit it High....just sayin

From today's BA PHS chat ... https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/hot-sheet-chat-51022/

Geoff Pontes answered questions regarding the latest Hot Sheet from 1-2 p.m. ET.

Joe (CT):

Thanks Geoff for what you do! Robert Hassell or Zac Veen, and why?

Geoff Pontes: I would take Hassell if only because I think the overall hit tool is there and the power will come. It's close, as Veen has the juice that Hassell doesn't have at present.

Is something amiss with Hassell?

April (76 AB): 408/471/645 ... 16% K

May (80 AB): 200/273/273 ... 30% K

That is a big reversal of fortune in a decent sample size for an "elite" hitter.

Was in Ft. Wayne on the 26th and 27th to see the Tincaps, but Hassell didn't play on the 26th and the game was rained out on the 27th.  Nonetheless, what I said in early May came to fruition for the remainder of the month.  He needs to get aggressive again in the hitting zone and hit his way on vice walk his way on.  This is what made him a special player and he needs to go back to that style.

By the way, Coniff was correct-the food at Cindy's and Proximo's was very good, especially the latter although a little pricey.  The blue crab and clam fideo was excellent and the torta for dessert was fantastic!  Kudos to the transplanted server from Encinitas for suggesting the torta for my wife and me.

Always a bit of a head scratcher to me when a hitter valued as "elite" and having real success suddenly changes approach and struggles ... especially in low A from a Top 100 prospect.

Has the league significantly changed their approach in throwing to him and he has yet to adjust?
