Preller gave up what many thought were prime prospects at the time to acquire Luis Arraez from Miami.  Yes, the Marlins wanted to dump salary (although they paid almost all of Arraez' salary in 2024) but looked to get better with Dillon Head, Jacob Marsee, Nathan Martorella and W00-Suk Go.  Head was the Padres #1 pick and Marsee and Martorella were tearing up the minors at the time; Go was a very overrated RP from Korea.

The results of that trade greatly favor SD even if they don't re-sign Arraez for 2026.  What they play for is to win NOW, not 3-4 years from now when some of these prospects might reach their potential.  Unfortunately for the Marlins none of what they got look to be impact major leaguers, although Head may have an outside chance if he fully recovers from his injuries.  Although Arraez is currently not hitting up to his norm, you  have to think he will and will be a significant factor as the Padres go for another playoff spot in 2025.
