Regular Season thread.

Well Mitchell is off the 40 man, so unlikely he would be a top option to be added back ... if they want bad options to start, EP has much to choose from on a par with Mitchell.

Quantrill back to starting is likely in my mind.  Strahm to the pen seems inevitable and Paddack could go to the pen or just get another 10 day rest option to LE to deal with their innings limits.

Lucchesi - Lauer - Allen - Quantrill (none with real inning limits) and a mix and match of Paddack, Strahm, Lamet, and maybe Diaz to engulf the #5/#6 SP slot and long relief. All subject to adjust for injury and / or real bad performance.

It’s really a shame FTJ missed five weeks.

He could have had a Rookie season for the ages.

25 HR......25 Steals......125 runs scored......325 avg......375 OBP.

Along with GG defense.

Instead Pete Alonso will win ROY cause he’s gonna hit 40+ hr along with nothing else.

Tatis will be better in 4 of the 5 tools yet lose ROY cause “voters dig the long ball”.

And then The Sheriff on an innings limit.

Because Padres.

And the fact that Alonso plays in NY. Nobody east of the Misssissippi stays up to watch the Pads play, except you MrP. If a NYY had scored on a pop up to 2B, would have heard for days on XM, FTJ does it, crickets about the play.

Yes, just a short window but has there been a shift in evaluation of players going forward? Note that in the past 7 days:

Outfield:

Renfroe .... 19 AB, Reyes .... 17 AB, Margot ... 16 AB

vs.

Myers ... 9 AB, Naylor ... 7 AB

Margot is hitting (1.137 OPS) in that window while Myers is just not hitting plus Margot adds to the defense. Have the Padres ... for a while ... dropped Myers to the "4th OF" role? Add that Naylor is not hitting either sort of setting up his option to the minors when needed.

======

Same observation at catcher .... Mejia 15 AB (1.137 OPS) vs. Hedges 6 AB. Are the Padres moving Hedges to "back-up" status due to his lack of offense? Side note: seems that Hedges hits better coming off rest and against pitchers in the 90 MPH FB range but just can't handle plus velocity ... so maybe strategic use will add to his offense rather than forcing the daily use.

======

Both Myers and Hedges have and long windows to establish their starter roles ... have not ... so is their current usage an indication of how the Padres will approach the rest of the season? Will that approach impact the pitching staff ... e.g. Stammen et. al.

I think with Mejia it's much more a conscious "planned" decision.  With Margot over Myers, more playing the hot hand.  Margot works well in the bottom/top of order 9-hole especially these 2 games with DH (starting again).

I think with Mejia the Pads are just finally giving him the chance he deserves.  Why trade Brad Hand if you're NOT going to play Mejia?  The book is out on Hedges.  Some combo of mostly unable but maybe also unwilling to change his approach to do better than .210/.260...  CAN'T start on an NL team that desperately needs to get to league average OBP range no matter how good his "D" is!  (maybe on an AL team with an elite 1-8 lineup).  Something getting really overlooked with Hedges is where he's at salary wise:  Over 2 MM this season in 1st year as a Super 2.  Even with the terrible OBP skills, his elite defense & plus power will get him steady raises AS A STARTER.  Tough for a team in Pads payroll range with 70 MM going to 3 guys to pay him 3-4 MM next year... trade candidate?

Myers is just so damn frustrating.  He just loses his swing/eye all the time; when he finds it, he's league MVP caliber, but it never lasts.  Avg & Slug both down about 10% over his career.  2 interpretations:  1) He's "due" to get hot & have a good 2nd 1/2 in the Summer, or 2) He's really "lost" that 10% making him an above average athlete who's a below average MLB starter... 🙁

Definitely a wake up call for Myers, but the "big 3" trades from Preller's first year ALL look bad now (Myers, Upton, Kemp).  If he doesn't turn around to some extent, feel like Pads have to look at "bad contract" trade for P or something... ugh.

Just guessing they keep Hedges around into 2020 ... even in arbitration he would likely get to the $3MM range which is not a burden (even for a back-up). He is veteran insurance until they are sure Mejia holds the #1 slot and A.Allen convinces them he can handle a ML role. On the flip side, his profile will not get any significant return even if a contender loses their #1 catcher. Hedges as a back-up at $3MM may be better than what they could get in return ... plus they can deal him at a later date if warranted. A 2020 trade deadline deal?

Myers is just plain frustrating since I see the talent but not the performance. IF the Padres had a clear set of better options for the 5 OF slots might work harder to move him ... but although Renfroe (also streaky), Margot (still TBD), and Reyes are leading the OF race ... and only Margot can handle CF (until Jankowski returns ...if he returns) ... might have to work with Myers in the mix. Beyond those, Naylor has a ways to go (not hitting or fielding) and Cordero has questions about health and ML hitting / defense. Then add dealing Myers (or more specifically his 3.5 years / $62MM cash owed) is not going to happen without the Padres eating a minimum of half ... maybe more since Myers is at best an "average" player (1-2 WARish). He too may be a hold until 2020 trade deadline (reduces the amount owed making him a bit more of a trade option). At the point when I would want to aggressively move him, I would not trade bad contract for bad contract (don't need the new body clogging up the roster) but would just eat as much contract as needed (it is a sunk cost and the alternative is live with) so eating a big chunk at least saves some and potential yields one of the Rookie Ball prospect that Preller seems to find that play out in the long run.

When was the last time the Padres were at .500 after 80 games? 2 games out of the Wild Card. That with result with Tatis out for an extended period ... Machado not getting hot until mid-late May .... Hosmer beginning to hit as we expected last season. Add that the other contenders for the WC are all flawed .... at this point have to say there is a chance for the playoffs. In a month the trade deadline could be interesting.

Padres luck is we are close enough to take a shot but miss on playoffs and therefore our chance to trade ML veterans for future pieces.

We won’t trade Yates,Myers,Kinsler or Renfroe  and miss our chance to get better for 2020-2021.

Did what they should beating up on league worst O's...

... but need to end the Quantrill to pen experiment.  That was brought about in first place by whipsawed bullpen with all the optioning down.  EVERY (healthy) player on 40-man but G. Reyes is eligible to be recalled for Thursday's game...

... they should definitely recall Diaz & Erlin and option Maton and Quantrill; get Q back on a SP schedule... his stuff esp FB looked like it had so much movement, but he had absolutely no control of it today... side effect of stuff "playing up" out of pen?  If they let him get "off" a SP schedule too long he won't be available when they inevitably need him as a 6th SP...

Was the Tatis out at home call reviewed? Looks like he slid around the tag?
