Quote from Brian Connelly on April 2, 2019, 11:15 amQuote from David Nevin on April 2, 2019, 10:57 amI'm a little concerned that a team expecting to contend.....that needs pitching, didn't feel he was worth keeping.
I am hoping that Balsley's familiarity with him is why we made this move and they maybe see something they can
"fix" or change.
Terrible analogy, but Wisler is like signing Kinsler to possibly move to 3B before Machado was in the picture...
Not the guy they really want, but the "best available". Even I have to concede that at this point in the season, there's no way Pads & another intend to contend team (i.e. Indians) are going to trade major MLB assets. That whole strategy may get re-visited depending how season goes for each, and if Pads make a move sooner (i.e. Keuchel or Stroman); but any trade before deadline would be prospect oriented, not MLB.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 2, 2019, 12:25 pmIf the Indians continue to deal with injuries to their best players.....Ramirez and Lindor, their season could fall apart quickly.
Other than the two starters in question they really don't have much else.
If it wasn't for the weak division Kluber would have already been traded.
I could see the Twins taking off in that division and making the possibility of the Indians trading Kiluber a reality.

Did hear a national type suggesting even with the Indians' pathetic OF they should still run away with the AL Central. Of course barring key long term injuries ... apparently he does not like MINN.
The key is the 5 man pitching staff with the three behind Kluber - Bauer being Carrasco - Clevenger - Biebler and his national guy thinks that could be the best SP if you consider 1-5 (not sure I agree but still among the elite).
Actually his idea was for Cleveland to deal one of that three to bolster their offense.
Frankly if the Padres can pry Clevenger out of Cleveland for a lot less than either Kluber or Bauer ... that would be a good move. Still not a cheap move (in terms of talent) since Clevenger has 4 remaining control years but comes at league minimum. Think a Clevenger move could be worked sooner than Cleveland moving Kluber / Bauer who they will likely wait until they are totally out of it (at that point good chance SD is also out of it).

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 2, 2019, 2:06 pmWould love Clevenger.
I think the Twins pitching is pretty good.
Pineda is gonna have a good season I think.
Berrios/Gibson/Pineda/Odorizzi os a solid 4 IMO.
But in the end the Twins don't have to win the Division for the Padres to benefit.....they only need to make it tough on Cle.
and show them that they need more offense.

Quote from 3fingersplit on April 2, 2019, 10:54 pmI've said it before.....Play Renfro and let him get in a groove.....2 HR night
If he knows he is in the line up and not this one day in then one day out...he is going to get you 25-30 HR a year and hit .260 +
Andy Green has done more to screw this guy up than anyone and if Renfro does get traded to a team that actually just pencils him in and gets him innings and AB's he is going to do a lot of damage to opposing teams including the Padres if he is dealt to a National League team
Renfro has a OPS of 1.091 with a .273 BA....Reyes has a BA of .71 and a OPS of .206
I know it's early but.....

I completely agree Renfroe has received a Bochy esque rookie treatment from Green and has been completely mismanaged for a team that was expected to lose 180 games the last couple years. It really shouldn't be Renfroe vs Reyes though. It should be framed as Myers/Renfroe/Reyes and which pair provides the team the most flexibility and production going forward. If Renfroe or Reyes can provide enough trade value to bring back an undervalued contract equivalent to Myers overage then you have to consider moving them. If they can't you hope Myers has some takers at the deadline. Right now I see them as equally productive at the plate with Myers edging out Renfroe defensively with Reyes trailing far behind.

Quote from fenn68 on April 3, 2019, 8:42 amThe Renfroe - Reyes future is a bit difficult to sort out. In part, their trade values are likely a lot lower than we would hope. Stepping back and we have two OF ... neither have proved anything in the ML and both have shown limitations on defense and, at least with Renfroe, some limitations in on-base skills. The fringes of MLB are filled with "prospects" that fit a similar profile. Guessing a team would trade for either of them ... just not a big return. Plus even though a LHH ... might have to bundle Cordero into that group since not a good CF and more suited to a corner.
Myers (and his contract) are not going anywhere ... we need to live with that. Contract aside, think Myers currently is the best of the lot if you combine offense / defense / base running.
IF the Padres make a bigger deal, could see Renfroe or Reyes (or both) as a part of the deal with prospects in the mix but hard to see either in a useful one for one sway.
