I just don’t see the need for another RH bullpen arm?

Agree .... maybe they have an issue with either Maton or Stock and their command plus another AAA arm ... developing adds some call-up insurance no matter which the send down. Not sure about the AAA RP being great call-up options ... yet.

Paddock was very good. 1 concern is with 2 basic pitches you could see the 3rd time around he wasn't  fooling them as much. More fouling off of pitches  and taking of borderline pitches.  Many more pitches in Last  inning.  He was averaging about 13 per and threw about  double that his last inning including a 10 pitch to Sandoval that ended in a double.  I know he threw  a couple of curves but basic fastball and change. He will need a 3rd pitch he can count on if he will become  our number 1 starter

Not sure anyone was projecting Paddack as a #1 ... more a #3 on a good team. IF the curve comes around then maybe more but for now the FB/CH coupled with plus command make him a ML pitcher for a long time.

Disagree.  Bullpen needs as much length as it can get... already might have to call up a guy for 2 days before road trip with Maton going 3 IP tonight.   Wisler has pitched 130 & 125 innings last 2 yrs Majors/Minors.  Started 15 & 18 games almost all in Minors those years.  Staff simply needs the length down 4 guys (M. Diaz, Castillo, Nix, Kennedy) since start of ST on top of inexperience/innings limits.

Rough start for Strahm.  Anyone see it?  Observations?

I'm just going to chalk it up to nerves, long layoff, and near impossible acts to follow.  I think he'll be fine.

Velocity was down to 89-91. Didn't locate a single pitch at the bottom of the zone, everything floated towards the danger zone and rightfully got hit hard. Slider was the only thing that resembled a major league pitch. Surprised Meija wasn't out there after catching his last ST start. It was a tight strikezone for him and the Padres the entire night.

I saw it and didn't see it coming. Strahm looked nothing like I expected, They hit rockets or seeing eye hits, Strahm couldn't buy a break. I think he will be ok. Too much stuff and too good last year. I hope his fastball is back to normal next start

Unless you're a premiere Ace you can't overcome poor location.

Strahm was constantly belt high in the first couple innings....major league hitters don't miss those

often.

We hit the ball hard every time in the first inning....great defensive plays and good defensive positioning got us.

After that everything for the next 4-5 innings were pop ups and weak ground balls.

Kelly did not impress me...but he kept us guessing and kept the ball out of the center of the plate after the 1st.

That was the difference IMO.

Wisler is a much better option than either of those guys if you're looking for someone who can handle 3+ innings. Whether they want to call it piggybacking or not, the big league club is going to have to do something like that with some frequency this year.

The only relievers in El Paso on the 40-man roster right now are Perdomo, Gerardo Reyes and Brad Wieck. Wieck will likely join after he's shown he can go back-to-back days. But that thin staff is part of the reason to acquire more depth.

Wisler is a good pick-up ... didn't give much and COULD fill a need in the pen.

By most accounts he has a very good slider ... and not too much else. However, a decent chance working out of the pen and with Balsley's guidance that could make him effective in that role. He was at one time the Padres #2 prospect ... so some basic talent to work with. Maybe the next Yates or Hand or Gregerson ... maybe not. If that does not work out ... just a DFA and really no harm no foul.

Agree that he could provide the RH long innings behind Strahm while Erlin provides the LH long innings behind Paddack ... flipping the LH/RH pitchers mid game could be a plus. That would allow the Padres to use Warren (also can go multiple innings) to support the other LHSP.

The may want Paddack / Strahm to go 5 to delveop as SP ... bring in the long man for 2-3 depending on the game situation ... then the end of game arms. That would allow Wisler - Erlin - Warren to pitch more than every 5 days. The real "breaks" for Paddack / Strahm will be skipping starts by utilizing off days and keeping the other starter on the 5 day cycle and an occasional bullpen day.

=====

Maton is the arm I would have sent down but a bit concerned about Stock based on his last effort. Velocity down and zero control ... pitches not near the plate. Second outing in a row could be a factor but the Padres will need  RP pitchers who can effectively go back to back games. Or maybe an injury? Interesting to see the Padres' call.

I'm a little concerned that a team expecting to contend.....that needs pitching, didn't feel he was worth keeping.

I am hoping that Balsley's familiarity with him is why we made this move and they maybe see something they can

"fix" or change.
