And two more solo shots from Reyes......

C'mon Andy! HR leaders don't bat 2nd!

We will see what happens when Tatis returns and when (if) Urias is promoted. Both could give some top of the line-up value and allow Reyes to set lower where his power could generate more runs. I don't think they will lose much in the way of base running or OBP by moving Reyes out of the #2 slot.

Just speculating that Reyes is both benefiting and getting hurt by hitting ahead of Machado. One, they are not pitching around him and he is getting the balls to hit ... result the solo HR but a low OBP since they are not going to walk him. Should however ... with seeing the better pitches have a higher BA, so?

Tatis was sporting a .360 OBP with speed / power before the injury ... sitting him at #1 or #2 should change the dynamic of the line-up. Then IF Urias returns and lives up to his OBP minor league billing and sits at #2 the Padres could have some action at the top with some punch following in Machado - Hosmer - Renfroe - Reyes - Myers.

The OBP for the Padres is more focused on a couple of positions rather than a total team issue. Those positions however are really bad and if you believe that having "black holes" in the line-up hurts the rest of the line-up as I do since pitchers can work to avoid giving in to the better bats.

The NL overall OBP is running at .321 ... the Padres are at a very bad .295. However, that is a mix of good and bad. The catching position is a sad .249 ... Kinsler is .267 ... Margot is .262 ... France is .291.

So hopefully Tatis with his .360 OBP bumps France .... Urias arrives and produces an OBP in the 300+ range ... also explains why Margot is out as a starter. I have no idea what to do about the catching slot except pray that Hedges turns it around ... but no defense can offset that poor level of offense if they expect this team to contend.

Should note that both Renfroe and Reyes are below the league average for OBP but both their SLG offsets that to generate a good wRC+ ... a reason they should be down in the line-up.

Also, although he gets much maligned, Myers over the past month actually had the best OBP for the Padres in the upper 300 range and led the team in walks. For the year Myers plays out as an average NL hitter with a .321 OBP and a 100 wRC+. Still frustrating and want more out of him but at this point he is not the problem.

So, let us wish on the return / development of Tatis and Urias and a reconstructed batting order to take the Padres to the next level.

What I don't get about this is the math is so freaking obvious...

After the 1st inning here's who's hitting ahead of you to potentially be on base:

#7  "Kinsler"  <.200 BA, #8 "Hedges" <.200 BA, #9 "SP" <.100 BA, #1 "Garcia" 'OK'

...Tatis being back might improve things nominally, but the #2 hitter is fundamentally there to set the table for the guys behind him.  If you had an ultra-deep lineup or one where just no one was at all suited for #2, maybe you could make an argument for him there, but with our NL lineup falling off the table around #7, it actually increases the importance of his RBI opportunities hitting cleanup... current lineup is literally just minimizing/wasting his power/RBI's...

Quantrill recalled to start today

Diaz recalled (and off the 60 day IL) for the pen

Strahm to the 10 day IL (rib strain)

Wieck to AAA

Dickerson DFA (to make room on the 40 man for Diaz' return)

Bad loss basically due to Wingenter / Stammen not holding the lead.

However, albeit based on small sample size, some potential for improving the offense.

1. Austin Allen was drafted as a hit first catcher ... looks like he has a clue with the bat. In his limited AB has 2 walks but more intelligently he has two bunt singles in face of a full shift. Add that he is a needed LHH. He should earn more playing time given Hedges' lack of hitting.

2. Josh Naylor, another needed LHH, also seems to have a good sense hitting and has gotten his hits in key situations. He should remain on the 25 man for spot starting and PH.

Time to give up some defense for offense?

3. Miguel Diaz' return was good ... the velocity and movement was good ... the Padres need some upgrade in the pen and looks like Diaz could be that.

Not going to hold my breath.

I really hope Diaz can help out in the middle to 8th innings. We could use a steady pitcher to help Yates. Lefty relief has been trouble all year with no help in sight. I don't  know who can help from minors.

Did Quantril get pulled after 5 or did he struggle into the 6th?

Looking at the box, I can't figure out why a healthy pitcher gets pulled after 5 and 80 pitches?

In the bottom of the 5th the Padres pinch hit for Quantrill with Renfroe. Two on two out and ahead 5-2.

Probably weighed the risk of of going one more inning with Quantrill (running him into the 90s pitch count against the 3rd time through the line-up) versus Renfroe knocking in another insurance run.

Of course it's still way early but this upcoming 6 game road trip to SF and Col. to me is important.

We "really" need to win 4 of those 6 and hopefully 3 from the Rocks!

We've got a tough stretch coming up against good teams.

Definitely gotta take advantage of SF and Bal.
