Bad loss basically due to Wingenter / Stammen not holding the lead.

However, albeit based on small sample size, some potential for improving the offense.

1. Austin Allen was drafted as a hit first catcher ... looks like he has a clue with the bat. In his limited AB has 2 walks but more intelligently he has two bunt singles in face of a full shift. Add that he is a needed LHH. He should earn more playing time given Hedges' lack of hitting.

2. Josh Naylor, another needed LHH, also seems to have a good sense hitting and has gotten his hits in key situations. He should remain on the 25 man for spot starting and PH.

Time to give up some defense for offense?

3. Miguel Diaz' return was good ... the velocity and movement was good ... the Padres need some upgrade in the pen and looks like Diaz could be that.

So, who gets shifted out?

Cordero is coming fast and should be with the Pads next week. That leaves.....Margot? Does he have options? I'm not sure anyone is terribly high on Manny right now so a demotion there seems obvious?

And I'm still thinking Kinsler's days are  numbered.

Who gets moved when Tatis arrives?

France probably goes when Tatis arrives today.

As for Cordero ... not that sure he is coming up all that soon since he is not doing all that well in his AAA rehab off very limited work. Low average, Low OBP, High K rate ... and the is in the uber hitter friendly PCL/EP. Naylor is providing a better LHH option for now. Margot has 2 more minor league option years so maybe he could go but would consider him and Cordero the 5th OF now and might be more inclined to keep Margot for defense sub since Cordero's defense is not his calling card.

Kinsler will make it at least to the trade deadline ... he actually has an acceptable slash line in May +. Still don't know what to make of Urias' development in the eyes of the Padres.

Speaking of Urias, any chance he could play CF? Hes been at SS all season, so obviously he has some high level of athleticism. And I know the stats from AAA are WAAAAY over inflated, but does SD ever give Boog a shot in CF in SD, the LHB would be a nice add.

Probably nothing will come from this but MLBTradeRumors went on a long piece on options to replace McCutcheon in PHIL and dissect the PHIL in-house options being "wanting". Should note they mentioned almost all living OF that even have a remote chance of being moved ... so pure speculation piece.

They did mention both Margot and Myers ... although not suggest a probability or even desirability. So, I will speculate keeping in mind that they need a CF although could move Harper to CF if absolutely necessary.

Margot would give them a CF ... probably at low cost to platoon with Halsey (LHH raw rookie). Looks as though Margot is out of favor in SD so Padres may be willing to move him to make room for Cordero and open a roster slot .... return should only be a non-roster prospect. However, does not add much offense.

Myers would be the bold / interesting deal albeit his $61MM remaining would be a negotiation point. PHIL is in a battle to win the NL East ... Cubs just got stronger with Kimbrell ... LAD are just strong ... they need some veteran offense in the OF plus Myers in that hitter's park might be effective. PHIL can afford to take on a big chunk of Myers' contract which might appeal to open up some Padre payroll room to add a veteran SP. Not sure how the Padres would like to go forward with a Margot / Cordero CF platoon. Again, PHIL takes on a major portion of the salary and the Padres get a decent non-roster prospect (or two).

Again not likely ... but COULD have value to both organizations.

Booster,  Nice catch on "Boog".  I was just about to post/push a week or so ago that he would make more sense on 25-man than Dickerson or even Naylor, but:  1)  Cordero started rehab assignment, 1A) 40-man roster really tight; it's OK to DFA a guy like this when the person he was filling in for on roster (Cordero) comes back... but not for a brief period of time like 1-2 weeks, because then you risk losing the depth completely if he gets claimed, and 2) It is a really small sample size that is way beyond what he's done in the past... suggesting it's not sustainable

Don't think Urias has the range/speed for CF

This is probably over-reacting, but to me this 4-game set with Nats is maybe the most important series of the season:

B/C it's 4 games, if not a split, it's either a 2 or 4 game swing between the 2 teams.  Pads go into it limping with their SP (Margevicius & a bullpen game for 2 of the 4 starts), but hopefully with Tatis, Jr. back in the fold.

Nats on other hand are desperate to get going & are hot; on 4 game win streak, and 8-2 last 10.  Pads (8th in NL)hold 2.5 game lead over the Nats, who at 5.0 games back of 2nd wild card(13th in NL) are at the very edge of being effectively "out".

Given the state of the Pads SP corps for the series, I would be absolutely OK with a split here.  But if Pads could somehow win the series, they would grow that lead to 4.5 games (over Nats), and push them back to > 5 GB Wild card.  One team sweeping the other could literally have the effect of moving the needle enough to make the winner "Buyers" & the loser "Sellers" at the deadline

I guess I could understand adding Margevicius as a SP to start the season given the alternatives and his ST work but he just is not that good unless his command is pinpoint ... and it has not been.

Sending him down before made sense ... calling him back up did not. At this point in the season, not sure why they would not add L.Allen to the 40 man and call him up instead of Margevicius. Allen has been effective in the hitter friendly PCL and he is a much more highly regarded prospect. Calling him up now would not cost a control year. He did pitch 149 innings in 2018 so should not be on an innings limit. DFA of Pirela or Stock is not a concern.

Going to add Allen to the 40 man in the off-season anyway .... so why not move up the inevitable and give him some ML experience and potentially a better SP alternative than Margevicius?

Plus we then go on the road against Division opponents and then have Mil and Stl to contend with.

I'm really hoping we are a few games "over" .500 at the AS break and not under.

Also "really" hoping getting FTJ back creates a spark offensively and gets Green to move La Mole' down in the lineup a spot or two.

Padres teased with a fast start ... but I have to remember before the season projecting an 81-81 team was optimistic coming off the last 3 seasons of 66-96, 71-91, and 68-94. Last .500 or better was 2010.

So, at 31-31 I should be happy with their improvement ... but with the tease ... want more. 100 games to go, could still go a lot of ways but that is why we watch.

Agree on FTJ being a major catalyst ... both offensively as hopefully the lead-off man and allowing Machado back to 3B will improve the left side defense.

Hoping a Tatis at #1 and a platoon of Garcia / Kinsler at #2 dropping Reyes down to 5th or 6th should firm up to offense.

We may be getting back to were most thought the issue would be pitching. Will be a test against the better hitting clubs.
