That was damn impressive!
Think he gets himself into trouble at times because of his control / command vanishes and/or the opposition is not swinging aggressively.
However the "stuff" is legit and at 25 should be around (and potentially a factor in the pen) for a few years.

If a change was made(not that I expect it),who would you prefer?
Phil Nevin?
Joe Girardi?
Alan Trammel?
Rod Barajas?
Barajas. He is well ingrained into the organization philosophy of play that is being instilled at every level on the minors and is familiar with the young players. His work in the minors shows he can manage.
Not sure the older, veteran manager type settled into their philosophy of play meshes with what the Padres organization has been trying to do over the past few years in developing their prospects.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 8, 2019, 3:22 pmThe D Backs keep winning.....what’s up with that?
If this keeps up their GM is gonna look like a genius.
Letting Goldschmidt,Pollack and Corbin go and still competing for the division.

And needed!
The Ws seem solid and many of the Ls are heart breakers ... which sure seems like what it's like to be "on the way" to being a contender!
It's getting easier and easier to dream on getting a couple of OFers who get on base ... Urias developing into a solid hitter ... and even Mejia developing into an upgrade over Hedges ...

His delivery is like an Instructional "How not to Pitch" video; seems like an injury waiting to happen, and he's never shown control in the minors; probably tied to his delivery.... but not many guys can do what he does.
In my mind, he showed enough today that IF Tatis is back for the Rox series, I go with G. Reyes' velocity over Maton's spin rate in Colorado. That's assuming they don't go with 8 in pen for a 3 game series around 2 days off... if so, that would send France down. Inevitable at some point, but would like him on the bench for a little while longer... maybe to start the middle day so Tatis "only" starts twice in 4 days to begin his return?
Risky to go with 7 in pen in Colorado with only 1 voluntary recall guy available (Stock), but extremely lucky to have the series sandwiched by the off days. Perdomo becomes available oat the beginning of the LAD series...

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 8, 2019, 3:58 pmHow much better would we be with Urias at 2b every day?
Just when it looks like Kinsler has turned a corner with the bat he can’t field and makes another baserunning blunder.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player make so many boneheaded mistakes.....”and” not hit,and still play every day.
At some point we’ve gotta forget about the $8 mil and play the better player.
I mean.......right?

Quote from Brian Connelly on May 8, 2019, 4:53 pmQuote from fenn68 on May 8, 2019, 10:04 amI is beginning to look like a flip from last season where the SP has moved to a strength in 2019 and the bullpen is now in question. Should note that the Padres' ERA is #3 best in MLB ... so as yet not a mega concern.
Given the desire to manage the young SP's innings / pitches, hard to get them past the 5-6 inning mark ... adding some overwork component to the pen. What needs to firm up is those early innings 4 RP options before they get to Erlin, Wingenter, Stammen, and Yates. Those early four need to be more consistently effective and deliver some 2-3 innings stints allowing for a more controlled use of the last 4. Not seeing that out of Wisler, Wieck, Warren, or Maton ... and not all that confident in Reyes and Stock although Perdomo has shown some signs of fitting that role. Frankly none of the non-roster RP look good enough to be called upon.
I guess there will be an ongoing shuffle to AAA ... rested mediocre RP is better than a tired mediocre RP?
Is RP the 2019 achilles tendon?
Short answer: No. Both depth AND quality decimated by Injuries. Directly led IMO to both the Warren & Loup signings.
Short run:
The finger for all the close games is being pointed in the wrong direction. The SP's are keeping us IN all those games! It's the offense that hasn't shown up. The power is there, but the OBP isn't, so we've got to be among lowest in league for runs scored / HR. The key to me is the top of the order (top 3). IF they can click together, this team could get really good in a hurry, BECAUSE there's so much power esp 4-6 in lineup. If they leave Kinsler up top as long as he can stay hot for, put Tatis #2 in front of Manny with either red hot Hosmer or (LHP) Reyes behind him?!?! BOOM! Could lead to way more "comfortable" wins than we have so far.
The (lack) of runs scored is putting WAY too much stress on back of bullpen. Wingenter to IL really hurts, but losing Stammen or Yates for any length of time while playing so many close games would probably be catastrophic. Unlikely to be able to add bullpen help via trade until late June/July. Offense needs to do play like a winning team all the time not just dramatically at the end of the game all the time!
Medium run:
In the medium & long run think we are in really good shape as the extensive IL heals up. But the real ace in the hole is Andres Munoz. His last 6 outings at AA: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 16 K! That's 5 outs over 7 innings from balls put in play,NOT by K... last outing was 2.0 IP. Probably watching # pitches/IP due to youth & extreme velocity, but there's NO point in a guy like this going up to AAA. Think he's very close to being a Padre. Imagine a healthy Wingenter, J. Castillo, maybe Miguel Diaz, now add Munoz!?! Pen could be ultra deep & strong later in year. Think all but Wisler (even Warren & Loup) can be optioned down.
Long run:
The Pads pen is ultra heavy in "long" multi-inning guys this year to help support the young innings-limited SP's. Won't need to be composed that way in 2020. Ability to be optioned up/down will be more important next year. I think these 2 groups need to/will be consolidate into fewer guys next year:
1) Short term contract guys: Yates, Stammen, Warren, Loup I really thought Pads would give Yates a "Brad Hand light" similar extension after last season... probably wishing they did. Here for at least 2020. It makes sense IMO to "consolidate" the 'quantity' of 5.5 - 7.3 MM being paid to the last 3 guys in 2019, into maybe just the 'quality' of Stammen next season at a higher rate plus the 700K buyouts on other 2. But that's not a sure thing. Expect 0 or 1 of those 3 to return.
2) Arb eligible "Long" guys: Erlin, Wisler, Perdomo If I had to pick just 1 it would be Perdomo. Erlin & Wisler will both be out of options next year; all are less important as SP staff matures & possibly adds a 6th starter (vs 8th pen) with 26-man roster next year. Perdomo & Wisler entering 1st year of Arb vs. Erlin in final year, but his value held down by TJ surgery while on 40-man. His value feels lower with so many LHSP's. Expect 1 or 2 of these 3 to return.
