What he's doing is unprecedented. I keep waiting for the league to figure out how he's sequencing basically only 2 pitches, but in addition to his stuff being elite, his control is too! EVERY 1st pitch is a strike. Knew that coming in, but don't remember any mention on these boards when he was in minors of just HOW competitive/alpha dog his personality is too. Instantly reminds me (& guessing almost 100% of Pads fans) of Peavy.... which is GREAT!

Quote from Brian Connelly on May 8, 2019, 9:07 amTotally wasn't thinking about Tatis return this soon! Rox series would be ideal since he could play a game, day off, play a game, off day for team.... ease him back a little. With Kinsler suddenly hot (.333 BA OPS almost 1.000) last 7 games, would LOVE to see Tatis slot in at #2: vs RHP: Kinsler, Tatis, Machado, Hosmer, Reyes, LF, CF, C vs LHP might flip Reyes & Hosmer.
With Quantrill going < 5 & Warren & Wieck likely down today, would be shocked if he doesn't go down for a RP today. If that guy (G. Reyes or Stock) pitches today & does well, it might be Maton be going back down when Tatis activated.

Quote from Brian Connelly on May 8, 2019, 9:59 amLooking a little ahead... Pads SP's for the 2 game set @ LAD... Paddack & Strahm
If team follows same pattern of extra day rest for those 2 & recalls Quantrill to start 5/19 for last game vs. Pirates...
then Paddack & Strahm get 1st 2 starts of 3 @home vs. ARIZ. No one I'd rather see vs. the 2 teams ahead of us!
Going ahead further, looks like Paddack gets last start @ Toronto & misses @ NYY; Strahm up 1st @NYY.... UNLESS... they keep Canadian-born Quantrill on 25-man for another (not "necessary" with off day) start/"homecoming" the last day in Toronto.
Would = Paddack & Strahm 1st 2 vs NYY... 1st game in NY is Memorial Day! I know what MLB (and I) would like to seee... 🙂

Quote from fenn68 on May 8, 2019, 10:04 amI is beginning to look like a flip from last season where the SP has moved to a strength in 2019 and the bullpen is now in question. Should note that the Padres' ERA is #3 best in MLB ... so as yet not a mega concern.
Given the desire to manage the young SP's innings / pitches, hard to get them past the 5-6 inning mark ... adding some overwork component to the pen. What needs to firm up is those early innings 4 RP options before they get to Erlin, Wingenter, Stammen, and Yates. Those early four need to be more consistently effective and deliver some 2-3 innings stints allowing for a more controlled use of the last 4. Not seeing that out of Wisler, Wieck, Warren, or Maton ... and not all that confident in Reyes and Stock although Perdomo has shown some signs of fitting that role. Frankly none of the non-roster RP look good enough to be called upon.
I guess there will be an ongoing shuffle to AAA ... rested mediocre RP is better than a tired mediocre RP?
Is RP the 2019 achilles tendon?

Quantrill down. G. Reyes up.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 8, 2019, 2:47 pmAfter seeing Gerardo Reyes and his 99 mph fastballs and 85mph sliders I’m think he ran into some bad luck last time he was up.
That was damn impressive!

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 8, 2019, 2:58 pmI know the bullpen has been highly taxed......but hitting Reyes there with 2 out and a risp could make Green look really bad if we don’t close this thing out.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 8, 2019, 3:00 pmSpeaking of which.....I’ve seen a lot of people calling for Greens head because of some of his decisions.
If a change was made(not that I expect it),who would you prefer?
Phil Nevin?
Joe Girardi?
Alan Trammel?
Rod Barajas?
