Tatis on the 10 day DL .... Maton called up for tonight ... going with 9 RP / 3 bench players.
Quantrill will be added tomorrow (apparently) with a corresponding 25 and 40 man roster move (or moves). The 25 man move likely is a pitcher but who? That is still 14 pitchers and 11 position players.
Should we then expect another add of a position player and another pitcher move? Urias up and Quantrill or Maton back down?
Just to add some fuel to the concept of additional moves (here or in EP) ... EP just activated from their IL a couple of players: Quiroz (2B/SS) and Powell (OF) and as yet have not made the corresponding offset. They will not be added to the Padres BUT could that imply action with Urias or Naylor / Dickerson?
Of course since this is May 1, could just be an issue created by May 1 opt outs from a couple of the minor leaguers in AAA (if they have them). Or maybe some yet to be disclosed injuries.
Stay tuned!
Like the callup of Quantrill to potentially make 2 starts before the next off day.
But really hate the timing of the 1 day callup of Phil Maton yesterday, ESPECIALLY if you're going to add a position player for the Thursday AM game (which, even though I HATE short bench, seems slightly bonkers to fly the guy cross country for the day game & then back to SD in a 24 hr period)...
Logistically this means we "burn" most likely Maton (but could be another RP) for 10 days without even having used him. If Quantrill pitches well, or even just "not horribly", he likely stays as 6th SP for one more turn; which would mean a temporary (gasp!) 7-man pen. I realize hindsight is 20-20, and that Warren & Erlin were down yesterday, leaving Pads "only" 6 RP behind Paddack, but wouldn't it have made more sense to call up the position player who is going to stick around till Tatis is back first?
Then if Quantrill bombs you could rotate up a RP in his place for Thursday and beyond.
Assuming Urias is the position player tomorrow, our remaining available 40-man guys are:
2 RP's who can't find the plate (Stock & G. Reyes plus Javier Guerra in EST), 2 C's (A. Allen & Torrens), and a AA OF (Olivares)
No one on Injured list at all close to returning... obviously, can add someone else to 40-man; but "extreme lack of depth" might be an understatement!

How many solo HR’s have we hit?
How many walks does this team have? BB: 74 = tied 27th. For comparison, #1 = LAD @ 131
How many innings have we had more than two Hits?
I don’t know the numbers exactly but my guess is we rank at the bottom of these categories.
Yesterday's win was like about 80% of our wins this year; "great" win, but 100% (solo) HR dependent, putting extreme pressure on back end of bullpen. Just doesn't feel sustainable. What drives me bonkers is that if you're patient & take walks, & get on base, EVERYONE ends up getting better pitches to hit!
And if your last name starts with an “M” you need to start hitting.
I’m taking to you Myers,Machado,Mejia and Margot!

Quote from fenn68 on May 1, 2019, 11:10 amDid hear Green suggest that although not "known" ... Tatis could be out for weeks based on how Green has seen these types of injuries progress or not progress.
That might influence the need for a INF for a longer term fill as needed.

Quote from fenn68 on May 1, 2019, 11:21 amAs much as it goes against my better judgement ... the Renfroe - Myers - Reyes OF, for now, might be the way to go. Margot just is not showing much improvement at the bat ... so the defensive replacement role fits.
All three could be easily projected to hit 30-40 HR if they played full time but not as impressed with that as in years past with HRs at an all time record. The downside is the extreme streakiness of Renfroe and Myers, high Ks / low OBP ... don't think that will change for either one. Reyes is the one who could breakout ... he seems to have a better concept at the plate plus a few years younger. Of the three, Reyes may be the one that provides the best offensive force in the future.
Maybe Preller should be looking for a quality offensive / defensive OF rather than a SP.

Well the good news is that is just 2 BBs per game behind #1... So an Urias 2B or France or even Garcia getting some ABs should help..also note Myers OBP is way off his career avg at the moment so hopefully that rights itself... Not helping the cause is Tatis Jr and his .360 OBP missing a few weeks..

Maybe I need to suggest we win tonight by 4 runs?

Quote from fenn68 on May 1, 2019, 3:04 pmWith the addition of Quantrill ... Diaz to the 60 day DL ... Maton back to AAA.
So at 14 pitchers .... 8 position starters ... 3 bench players (Hedges, Garcia (L), Margot). Hope they don't need PH or a double switch or worse an injury.
Another move has to happen after the game tonight.

Quote from fenn68 on May 1, 2019, 3:14 pmJust an observation .... Mejia is starting tonight. This may be the first time he started back to back thus leaving Hedges on the bench.
Mejia is not hitting but neither is Hedges. Last night Mejia had one of the most powerful / accurate pegs to 2B to throw out a base stealer by a lot that I can recall plus in the games I have seen he has been better than advertised defensively.
Could we be seeing the beginning of more playing time for Mejia and less for Hedges. Hedges was never projected as a hitter and has never really developed beyond a Mendoza line hitter. Mejia (younger) at least was projected as a top line hitter so has the upside for an offensive starved team. Mejia has a better chance of being a factor for the future than Hedges .. in my mind.
If they play Myers in CF (and bench Margot) for offense ... maybe that should be the route with Mejia starting (and bench Hedges).

Didn't Spangenberg have a bad hamstring that lingered for.....months? Definitely take time to bring Fernando back.

Yep, I guess the range of injury to hamstrings very a lot and have to be treated differently (with differing duration for healing). The normal approach is not to rush the player back ... could cause worse and longer term injury.
