Early positive ... Margot beyond his game winning HR yesterday. 36 AB with a slash line of 333/351/500 (851 OPS) and only 7 K (< 20%). Yes, early. Yes, small sample size but encouraging given he is the only real defensive CF for the foreseeable future.

So what are the chances we roll with a 6 man rotation for awhile?

I really think it is the way to go with "this" group "this" season.

Extra days rest....limit innings....not limiting a true Ace's starts.

YES.  Just needs to learn to Walk more to better utilize that speed.

Note: Erlin was sent to LE and not AAA plus per Cassavell''s report today he will not be stretched out as a SP but rather continue in a long relief role apparently.

Add that Cassavell indicated the Padres will not continue with a 6 man rotation. So I would expect Avila being sent down and a RP called up is the plan. Avila looks to have earned the role of 1st SP call-up as needed based on yesterday's performance.

On the down side, the report suggested Cordero will be out an "extended" time ... not a good sign given it is the same elbow that ended his season last year. He may create the 40 man slot by going 60 day DL (especially if they conclude a need for surgery). IF so, I would go Dickerson as the LHH (PH and spot starts) who may be better suited to deal with bench time than Naylor at this stage of his development.

Yeah, they don't need the 6-man for awhile with the way the days off coming up fall, but they used 5 RP's of 7 last night.  Definitely need another arm in pen.

I missed that Erlin was going to ELSINORE.  That telegraphs that he will only be down for the minimum amount of time.   I'm guessing that Avila's nice performance (he will likely go to AAA now; makes the most sense) last night factored into the decision NOT to stretch Erlin out as a SP.  So Avila #6 for spot starts like last night as needed, with Erlin, Wisler, Warren, and Perdomo capable of some length( > 2 IP) with all 5 of these guys able to move up/down.  Guessing we see Avila again somewhere in the next long stretch of 13 in a row from 4/26 - 5/8.

Yes, if Cordero (or Loup or B. Kennedy) goes on 60-day, a roster spot opens temporarily.  But who on 25-man?  The dropoff in reliability after Yates/Stammen is a big issue.  Could just rotate 7th bullpen arm up/down, but this rotation going to force a lot of pen work in general.  Probably more value in seeing if Urias can get going than 1 PH /day from Dickerson.  And feels too early in season to risk losing Greg Garcia, although he would LIKELY clear to AAA like Mitchell did?

See reply to FENN.  Think they almost have to use this approach, but only sporadically when they have long stretches with no days off.  So if Avila's the guy, likely he comes up, makes the spot start, goes right back down b/c otherwise he's taking up a roster spot but can't pitch for next 5 days which limits roster/bullpen too much.  Can bring him back up again in 10 days, so only "misses" 1 turn in rotation.  Can't have a 6-man rotation AND a 8-man pen with a 25-man roster.

I could really see your dream coming true next year, though, with 26-man roster &  Garrett Richards and Dinelson Lamet coming off surgery... just go straight 6-man all year long.  If a bunch of days off clustered together, skip the 6th guy once in a while.  Top 6 guys 25 - 28 starts each. In THEORY, guys going every 6th day vs. 5th SHOULD allow them to go a little longer/start and hopefully live with 7-man pen?  Lamet & Richards even at beginning of next year should be less pitch/innings count limited than Paddack & Strahm this year?

Here's a Lamet update from a Q&A with Dennis Lin at The Athletic ...

Dennis, great job!!! Any news on Dinelson Lamet? Heard he was progressing faster than expected.

@Daniel K. Sometime midseason is still the target. It's unwise to set a hard and fast date with a Tommy John rehabber. He does look very good physically, yes. He's not quite Clayton Richard, but he's used his recovery to get in what appears to be peak condition.

This start to the season surely has been nothing short of amazing. Manny Machado has been the difference maker for sure and the young pitching have been more than any of us could have asked for to this point. And while it’s hard to deny that the padres need an innings eater I really think this team also needs the offense to start heating up to allow the starting pitchers (outside of Paddack and Strahm) to be able to extend their innings and give the bullpen some rest. The question I pose here is should we sacrifice some of the future for the present to really take ahold of the division this early and add a bat and an arm through trace or do we stick to the plan and just stick with what has worked so far and maybe sign an arm?

I don't care about this season. It's a great story so far, but when we have to face 1's and 2's and actual lineups  throughout the playoffs we won't be going anywhere but home.  Stealing from the future for a phantom present is not smart baseball.

The only thing I'm doing is figuring out which of our starters in the majors/aaa are legit and who we can bulk move for a low $ 1/2. When someone decides to go full rebuild at the deadline (Pirates).

I agree to an extent. I do think it is a disservice to the team to not try and make a minor add to the team to get an innings eater in there. Taking 2 of 3 from the cardinals on the road (while yes is just three games) is one hell of a feat. If the lineup can just put it together on offense that will surely help the bullpen and allow the starters to pitch with some wiggle room.

I do think that if we can make it to the all star break in this thing then you have to make some type of move. But even before then is there a potential deal to be had that wouldn’t hurt the future?

While not a big move I wish they had grabbed Craig Gentry before he signed today. They have zero CF depth.  Someone to stash in AAA in case Margot turns an ankle. Any others you guys can think of to target as short term CF capable stop gap?
