Regular Season thread.

I caught a glimpse of something on the broadcast today regarding Urias that seemed odd.

Right after Machado homerun they showed a shot of the bench and someone(looked like Tatis) had ahold of Urias’s

collar and kinda shoved him back?

Urias was “not” smiling or joking.

Did anyone else see this?

Hopefully it was nothing....but it struck me as odd what with all the love in the dugout so far this season.

Too early to over react BUT a bit concerned about Urias' offensive approach (and results).

Had not seen him actually play much but all the reports were top line bat to ball skills. In his time up in SD seems to be over swinging and NOT focused on contact ... not catching up to those 93 MPH FB.

Add an aside ... while almost all of the players seem to be upbeat and energetic ... Urias seems down.

Am I seeing more than what exists or is something else going on?

His Hamstring injury was much worse than reported and he still hasn't recovered to the point where he can go full out. It affects his infield play, base running and in the batters box for sure.

Why do you think Kinsler was signed ?

I saw that too ... hard taking a moment like that out of context but nothing seemed friendly about that and clearly Urias was not appearing happy. That was the incident that made me reflect on the limited exposure to Urias upon his return .... just does not seem a happy camper.

Understand his hamstring injury was pretty bad but defensively he seems to be moving fine and doubt the Padres would risk a long term IL by bringing him up if they did not think it was OK. Could have just stuck with Garcia backing up both Kinsler / Tatis.

We are still in the small sample size period but in 53 PA last year before the hamstring injury his slash line was 208/264/354 with an elevated K% (for him). His 10 PA so far have yielded 0 hits, 3 Ks, and 2 DP. However, not so worried about that limited sample as about the visual of his approach (vs. his rep). His swings are big and just not catching up to hard stuff. Just does not look ML ready with the bat.

Combine the questions about the bat and his demeanor ... just not sure what to make of the situation. Not writing him off but not seeing the future here today. Padres are pushing merit as opposed to potential or strategic plays  these days (see Tatis and Margevicius making the 25 man) and that may get Urias back to AAA soon if no noticeable turnaround.

Weird re Urias above??  Context??

It's obvious but has to be stated that if Urias didn't make team out of ST, the only reason he's here after 4 games in AAA is due to Cordero's injury combined with Kinsler's slow start at the plate.

Depending on Urias' performance and how long Cordero is out... being down 2 LH OF if for a significant time, I could see a way for Alex Dickerson (or Josh Naylor) to sneak onto the roster here as a pure LH bench bat.  Really need that LH option.  If LF only don't see many starts in near term for either, so I'd go with Dickerson so Naylor can keep playing OF daily.  Also, can't "subtract" Naylor later once he's added, but might be able to with A.D.  He does have option/s left too.

Urias or a RP would have to go down, plus a 40-man move.

I LOVE what Pads are doing here having Avila come up for the start & Erlin down:

1)   Looks per schedule like Avila will go right back down after the start; presumably back to AA

2)  Since Erlin (& Maton) not eligible to be recalled yet, it leaves Perdomo & Gerardo Reyes as only 40-man guys available.  I'm guessing they go with Perdomo's experience & "length" as the temporary? replacement for Erlin

3)  AAA 5th SP Dillon Overton got sent to EST after his 1.1 IP disastrous debut (got ejected?).  I could see Pads slotting Erlin in for 1-2 starts to stretch him out a little before he returns.

4)  10 days from now can flip Perdomo & Erlin or stand pat.  Either way, Erlin more stretched out for longer outings.  If Perdomo is "OK" & Pads not sold on Avila after today, they could leave Erlin in AAA as a SP & he could be the "6th SP" next time it's needed.

Looks as though they optioned Erlin to LE ... I guess he can hang around the Padres and just go to LE for a couple of starts to keep sharp ... LE is starting a 7 game home stand today.

They replaced Overton with a veteran RP (F. Rodriguez ... 34). I guess that opens the option of sending Avila to EP and backfill AMA with any number of other options. I will give even money it is Reyes since they may need some later innings work too ... so as not to overwork Stammen / Yates.

Padres have 5 games for the 5 SP then a day off then in the next couple weeks another couple of days off ... so some extra rest for the SP (don't need a 6th during that run).

======

Guessing the Padres are going to be real reluctant to add a non-roster player at this point in the season unless it is a top prospect who is clearly ready. No so much that they don't have DFA candidates but more that they will need to make those DFA moves as the 60 day DL come off ... Lamet - Jankowski likely in mid-season ... Castillo - Nix TBD ... who knows about Richards. Not sure they want to add a "throwaway" non-roster who will in-turn get DFA ... that will still cost them a player to make room.

Avila was pretty good after 1st inning, could see another start for him. RP is scary right now other than Stammen and Yates ,they shouldn't give up a 5 run lead. By the time they get right the starters might be trending down. Oh well a win's a win.

Psyched Avila did so well!   Another great win!

Since Erlin just went to AAA, would be surprised if Avila does tomorrow... should slot back into his spot at AA.

But 84, you're right:  the gap between Yates/Stammen and everyone else is just too wide right now.  Need someone to step up & lock down that 7th inning/fill-in closer role.  Think eventually that guy might end up being Jose Castillo.  The bullpen is going to be one of the busiest in MLB innings wise due to the youth & limitations of SP's.  But I think they might have enough "length" in pen counting Minors & even guys like Avila to soak the innings... it's the high leverage ones that are the issue.

Part of the problem is it's KILLING Pads to have such poor production out of the leadoff spot; definitely a core reason more runs aren't being scored.  Like what they did today only due to the match up, but think they should keep trying Margot for the short run; let Urias really get on a roll before sticking him up there.

The way they're winning with timely HR's and saving every close games doesn't feel "sustainable".   I feel the offense is getting close to breaking out with  one of those 5-6 run innings & hopefully parlaying that into more sustainable runs/game &  less HR dependent than now.

Well, my thought was kind of the opposite esp for LH OF; already have 2 but on DL -- and  might return near same time.                 If you add Naylor, you can't DFA him.  But if you add Dickerson, you don't have to, but you could... when the other guys are back.  As we've seen again & again, who knows what will happen in the meantime

Note: Erlin was sent to LE and not AAA plus per Cassavell''s report today he will not be stretched out as a SP but rather continue in a long relief role apparently.

Add that Cassavell indicated the Padres will not continue with a 6 man rotation. So I would expect Avila being sent down and a RP called up is the plan. Avila looks to have earned the role of 1st SP call-up as needed based on yesterday's performance.

On the down side, the report suggested Cordero will be out an "extended" time ... not a good sign given it is the same elbow that ended his season last year. He may create the 40 man slot by going 60 day DL (especially if they conclude a need for surgery). IF so, I would go Dickerson as the LHH (PH and spot starts) who may be better suited to deal with bench time than Naylor at this stage of his development.
