In ML this year there are 266 players with > 300 PA ... ranking the highest K% players:
#4 ... Myers
#12 ... Renfroe
#19 ... Hedges
Maybe you could justify one in the line-up if he was delivering a lot of other offense but not all three and in this case none are. Beyond some spotty power offer little on OBP and then K. Basically don’t get on base and don’t move players along with hitting the ball.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 18, 2019, 6:28 pmI still think Myers will turn it around.
He will always K more than we wish but this season is not the player he is....or will be.
The other two do not have a few seasons that would make this season seem the anomaly.

I feel pretty good going into next season with Paddack/Richards/Luchessi/Lamet with Quantrill/Morejon/Baez/Lauer fighting for #5 and Gore/Patino/Avila/Bolanos available if needed.
Unless we trade a couple of the guys not named Gore/Patino from the 2nd and 3rd lists for a guaranteed upgrade I just don't get the need personally.
Lamet was amazing tonight.
To think we were worried a few months ago about our rotation being too left handed.
Now our top 3 Starters are right handed.
I really hope we can keep Paddack/Lamet/Richards healthy for all of 2020.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 18, 2019, 7:17 pmAre Brewers fans the worst in baseball or what?
I’m not even talking about booing Manny relentlessly.
I get it.
But they boo every toss to 1st....they boo every check swing not called a strike....they booed a close play at 1st that didn’t go their way and then mockingly cheered when the next one “was” called an out.
Maybe the mic is just turned up more than most and I’m noticing it more but they are really getting on my nerves.
Sure nothing like Cardinal fans.
Next time you watch a game played in St Louis notice they are about the only fans that don’t boo every time the visiting pitcher throws over to 1st base.....which I’ve never understood anyway but is done at every other Park in baseball.
Just now they cheered like they won the game for a can o’ corn to mid centerfield.....lol

Quote from fenn68 on September 18, 2019, 7:56 pmLamet was on top form ... and considering he is just back mid-season from TJ that is impressive. Good sign going into 2020.
Paddack and Lamet back to back strong efforts agains a team in the heat of a playoff hunt. Nice. Toss in Richard’s first game back (for 3 innings) showed his talent that should be in full display in 2020. 2020 staff has potential to be competitive.

- We have an ace and his name is Paddack. He pitches like one and he can beat anyone. Lament has ace stuff without a doubt. He just doesn't pitch like it consistently enough to be one. He only has a year and a half of time in mlb. He can still get better. If he can pitch like today on a regular basis he is awesome. Quantrill looks like a consistent sub 4.00 ERA, plus pitcher. That plus Richards is a hell of a staff. That doesn't even include Gore and Patino, who could both be great, or Lauer and Lucchesie who are both average. This staff could be one of the best in 2 years.

Quote from WindsorUK on September 19, 2019, 4:36 amYeah, I just can't see Fowler spending big money( or any for that matter) on an arm.
Stiill, he wants to sign Gerrit Cole, let him😁
Nice to see our young pitchers having some success here late in the season.
Shame our hitters aren't having any....

Although I don’t see any real indication that the Padres have another $30-35MM to spend on a FA and consider SP lower on the need list for the future than offense, IF the Padres do have that to spend ... maybe some logic can be made for a Cole / Strasburg pursuit ... basically elite SP.
IF the Padres determine that what they need to be legit contenders is a core of All-Star level elite players .... and really can’t find any options to bolster the offense worth the big paycheck .... sign the elite SP and lengthen the SP quality (#1-5) then use the “excess” SP to deal for improved offense. I guess if they construct a Cole - Paddack - Lamet - Gore - Patino rotation down the road: first, that could be totally dominant; and second, given the depth of quality pitching in the system coupled with the other teams’ having a perpetual need for SP ... a lot of trade fodder.
Sort of playing the cards being dealt and if the cards don’t show the quality offensive support they want, then play a different had with pitching.
Of course, need the $30-35MM more ...

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 19, 2019, 10:12 amYeah it just doesn't make much sense to add a Starter unless he is "significantly" better than Luchessi/Lauer/Quantrill.
Plus I would prefer if we do we do it via trade and make some roster spots.
Just as an example trading for Syndergard giving up a couple of our Starters and a couple good prospects(A.Allen/Edwards/Potts etc)
Would a deal of Morejon/Quantrill/A.Allen/Potts do it?

In general, hard to deal for an elite SP with any length of control on a reasonable contact. Then, that pitcher probably has to come from a non-contender .... not sure a contender (or a team that sees itself as a contender) would be motivated to take a key part of the team for a volume of prospects. Not all that easy to have those dominoes aligned.
Hard to see Syndergaard even being on the market this winter ... and clearly not at a return for a bundle of nice prospects ... maybe not even very good prospects. In 2019 they are making a run at the playoffs .. will be losing Wheeler (and some others) ... so hard to justify moving Syndergaard for less than an elite return (sort of the position they took this season when they were not considered contenders).
More likely any legit top of the rotation arm that may be available at a price that avoids any elite Padre prospects will be on short control (1 year, maybe 2) and have a good sized contract on a team that believes it is a non-contender. Not sure I can identify someone that fits that profile .... and if I could ... probably could ID a bunch of contenders that would be in on that deal driving the price up.
If it is short control ... got to question if it is worth it for the 2020 Padres. Bottom line is that don’t really see any top of the rotation arms that are being marketed except by the “buyer hopefuls”. Sellers are fat and happy with what they have and have the luxury with a lot of potential buyers to wait for that offer that they can’t refuse.
