Regular Season thread.

Padres shut down Paddack for the rest of the season after a solid final run of four starts.

Paddack and Tatis are probably the best two Padre rookies to come up together in a quarter of a century.

=====

Also, Richards’ return after TJ was encouraging. Watched the game ... he had his pre-TJ velocity / movement fully back and the command was there. Three good innings to start before he tired. A good winter of work and a full healthy ST ... he should be a key part of the 2020 rotation. Not ready to conclude he will return to his peak performance level or can avoid the injuries of the past that limited his workload.  But good news.

Are we sure we're going to trade prospects or pay big $$ for a Starter or even two?

I feel pretty good going into next season with Paddack/Richards/Luchessi/Lamet with Quantrill/Morejon/Baez/Lauer fighting for #5 and Gore/Patino/Avila/Bolanos available if needed.

Unless we trade a couple of the guys not named Gore/Patino from the 2nd and 3rd lists for a guaranteed upgrade I just don't get the need personally.

Agree ... don’t see the strategic need in 2020 (a lot of more needy spots to fill for 2020 and beyond) and, if anything, it is SP that is the strength of the near term prospects.

Maybe a stable 1 year filler to get to Gore and Patino while using Lauer and Quantrill as trade chips for OF upgrades.

With Preller, he is always looking at all options and maybe moves are more chess like setting up the real objective.

2020 is "The" year.....ownership has been telling the fanbase....so, they need to add the ACE to this pitching staff. I feel the same way, we really don´t need  to trade for an Ace because we already have one in Paddack, Gore...but are they going to be in 2020??, probably no.....

Maybe Kluber can be available (for Naylor, Quantrill, Margot)??

Maybe ownership is willing to go for the last piece??? (Strasburg, Cole)??

As a lifetime Padrefan, i´m patient, but we are that close that is getting so difficult....

Here's a question and forgive me if it's a dumb one.

With the 26 man roster next year and no more expanded rosters....what do teams do when they have an injury late in the season and need players to fill the roster after the Minor League season is over?

Do these minor league players head home wondering if they might still get a call?

What about those that live in S.America?

Do they stay with their Minor League team until the Major League season is over?

Like I said....maybe I'm missing the obvious here?

Good question. Guessing at the 15 day IL would cover the injured player and the team would have actually brought a couple of 40 man roster players to travel with the team (but not on the 28) just for this possibility and add them to the 28 as needed.

Similar thought, teams set the 28 on Sept 1 ... can they "option" one of the 28 (will be a 15 day option I think next season) and add someone to the 28 ... basically the same procedure as during the regular season? Keeps the integrity of the 28 limit but still provides some flexibility for roster construction and a window to give more prospects a taste of the ML.

I also was very encouraged from what we saw out of Richards the other day. His stuff looked excellent and his velocity was impressive. Assuming he can refined his command and limit the mistake pitches he suffered from, he should be a fine addition to the rotation (when healthy).

Looks at though the Padres have a very very good chance of setting a NL record ... unfortunately it will be for offensive strikeouts. Current NL record is 1529 (AZ in 2010) and the Padres are currently at 1453 will 11 games to play ... so a pace of 7 K per game will do it.

Could have had a shot at the ML record of 1535 but hard as it is to believe ... 3 AL teams (Seattle, Texas, and Detroit) have more strikeouts than SD and each should eclipse the ML record.  Detroit is already at 1500. Oh yeh, the AL has the DH so these guys have to be really really bad.

Now before we go to the fire the hitting coach (that has not worked so far with the Padres annual changes) ... maybe a more direct approach of dumping the players who can’t seem to grasp the concept of putting the bat on the ball and adding players that already get the concept.

Should note that the four teams I cited are among the worst records in MLB .... so not much to justify the high Ks for a full roster ... maybe if a player is ultra productive (like Tatis) the team can handle his high Ks ... but not in the rest of the flotsam and jetsam.

It's the new game. If you show big power your team will live with the high strikeouts. Tatis will get better. Hosmer is a low strikeout guy. Once Urias gets going he should really help us with that. Unfortunately guys like Myers, Renfroe and Mejia will always be high strikeout guys.

Actually Mejia is not a high K guy. Top 3 this season are:

Myers (34.1%) ... Renfroe (31.1%) ... Hedges (30.2%). Tatis is 4th (29.6%) but at least he is young and on the development curve so could improve but even if he does not ... his overall production justifies his K rate even now. Everyone else is under 25%.

With the Padres one of the lowest offensive production teams around and Myers - Renfroe - Hedges in their late 20s (not much hope of change) ... time to move on from all three if they can.
