Should I break up with the one that I have? The Padres will do the best with what they have. Complaining doesn't do anything to improve the situation.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 17, 2019, 3:19 amPeople have spent the entire season complaining about Hosmer and others.....pointing out the deficiencies of Reyes,Urias, and of course the bullpen and starting staff......suddenly with 2 weeks to go we’re not allowed to critique our players or we’re complaining?
What do “you” want to talk about that’s all positive Jason?

Quote from fenn68 on September 17, 2019, 4:29 amDoubt many WANT Naylor in the OF but the current crop of alternatives are not that compelling either ...
Martini a career minor league player ... 29 ... apparently a LF only ... DFA by OAK ... is what we are seeing is just an introductory hot streak?
Cordero is all projection ... assuming he can stay healthy after two injury filled seasons and even when playing a big strikeout machine and an inability to hit LHP ... plus not good defensively.
Renfroe even before his apparent injury shorten 2019 which may (or may not) be the cause of an abysmal 2nd half he was showing a career inability to get on base and struck out a ton.
Jankowski is not a corner OF and provides little offense even for a CF and absolutely can’t hit LHP. There may be a reason why he has not secured a starting role over the past years.
Margot looks to be descending into a platoon option for CF since he is unproductive against RHP and not much of a corner OF option.
Myers is .. well Myers. He will get hot and cold, play LF-CF-RF, and end up with a line about 260/320/450.
Not the biggest hurdle for a bad fielding Naylor to overcome to secure a semi-regular OF slot IF his bat develops along the lines of his prospect projections .... at only 22 no reason assume he will not develop (offensively) while hoping the others will be better than their track records.
So, may not WANT Naylor in the OF but may have to accept he is one of the better options for the 2020 Padres ... a team that will still be trying to find offense. Part-time starter / platoon with Renfroe in RF ... Myers in LF ... Margot / Jankowski platoon in CF ... Martini / Cordero in AAA. Then dream on the future with Trammell, Olivares, and the coming attractions.

Quote from fenn68 on September 17, 2019, 4:45 amQuote from JasonE135 on September 16, 2019, 6:15 pmTatis is going to stay at SS until he can't. His value is maximized where he is. They are not going to move him.
Given he is a below average DEFENSIVE SS .... his value is his offense which will play just as well in the OF ... especially if he bumps any of the unproductive Padre OF options. I know Tatis is fun to watch at SS but looking at the stats for SS with 700+ innings (27 in 2019) .... Tatis is 25th in dWAR, 22nd in UZR 150 (-8.5) .... 18th in DRS (-2).
Agree he will not move until a better overall SS emerges (offense and defense) ... and that could be Arias in 2022 if his defense is as advertised and he develops offense better than the OF options that Tatis would bump.
Years before we address that.

The hate Hosmer receives is just ridiculous. He’s hit over 400 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs this year leading the NL. He’s going to have 20 plus dingers and 100 plus RBIs and I know those who only care about stats will hate this, but he’s been a great LEADER and example of a pro ball player to a young team. Hosmer will never make the fan base happy because of his contract, but I love the fact the guy is Padre. When this team reaches the playoffs Hosmer will be a big reason for that. When the Padres do play in big games and are in need of a clutch hit in a pressure situation, Eric Hosmer will be the guy I want to see at the plate.

What I am hoping for is we sign or trade for an upgrade.
Or Trammell takes over CF and Myers plays LF with Renfroe in RF.
OR we package Naylor/Cantillo/Margot/Low level prospect for a Benintendi or similar option.
I really don't think we start 2020 with Naylor/Myers/Renfroe/Jankowski/Margot/Martini as our top 6 outfield options........do you?

Have to walk the line between adds that provide an incremental upgrade vs. adding a regular impact player ... both are good ... want the impact but expect at best to get the incremental piece.
Partly there are few (as far as I can tell) impact players on the market. I can think of some I want but trying to think like the seller and considering the competition for that player ... the price tag is likely to be too high edging into the Padres' prospects that the Padres need to keep to compete in the near term ... that is even IF the team will actually sell. Could be surprised but just finding it difficult to see it happen.
Maybe they go the Markakis or Dickerson route as FA ... both could be probably had on one year deals, low cost while not giving up prospects. Both might be considered incremental upgrades over Naylor, Martini, Renfroe.
On the trade front ... boy ... prying a Benetendi (BOST), Eaton (WASH), Tucker (HOU), and similar for the second level of Padre prospects is just hard to envision. Not willing to move the real blue chippers (Gore, Patino, et. al) and don't see the deal getting done for the likes of Baez, Weathers, et. al. Might get a better deal on lesser names such as Happ (Cubs) but will they even be incremental improvement ... different but better?
One that could pop up in the trade mix is Josh Reddick from Houston ... apparently they may be willing to move him to make room for Tucker. Reddick is 32 with one year control at $13MM ... useful offensively / defensively ... should not cost that much in trade collateral ... likely pitching would be Houston's focus.
