Naylor needs to spend 2020 in AAA playing OF everyday.

Hopefully his defense improves.

But either way....he hits .350 with 30 homeruns and builds back his trade value and is traded to AL.

Cause he is NOT an everyday outfielder for us.

I dont think any team will think of him as an OF, he needs to be in AAA at 1B everyday building up his value as a DH/1B.

Unfortunately he has to play to prove that he has the bat that the Padres think he has. If we didn't have Hosmer he would be playing 1B for us right now. If he shows a true quality bat we have options. We can trade him to the AL but he has to build up value first. Otherwise we have to keep him in the OF until we either get the DH in the NL or Hosmers contract runs out.

He doesn’t do us any good playing 1b in AAA unless he is traded.

So if you play him at 1b then it has to be with the understanding he’s trade bait.

No issue about Naylor being a bad OF but looking a his fielding stats vs other ML OF ... he is actually better than quite a few very bad defensive OF.

I guess a number of other teams have found a way to justify  carrying bad defensive OF to get that bat.

So two ways this can go:

Play Naylor now in the ML OF .... showcase that his bat works in the ML (remember he is still young / developing and his numbers are getting better as the season moves on)  .... let him show he is among the best of the BAD defensive corner OF. ML “success” will add to his trade value by adding OF option to 1B/DH.

Play Naylor now in the ML OF ... prove that his bat works in the ML .... join those teams that are OK with a bad defensive corner OF ... and embrace Naylor as the LHH hitting option in a corner OF spot. Does avoid “overpaying” for some unknown LHH corner OF who may be no better ... if there is even one available.

On a non-contender ... as the season starts to fade into history .... playing Naylor is just a good strategic call when trying to understand what they have for 2020.

I have no issue with playing him the rest of the way "this" year....but next year is another story.

While he "is" young and deserves time to show he can hit...I just don't see starting him over Jankowski/Cordero/Martini to start next season.

Plus....playing him every day in AAA you know he will rake.....

I guess another way to look at it is if he is our Opening day corner outfielder or even our 1st LH option I'll be concerned.

He hasn't been horrible at the plate but he hasn't hit enough to make up for his other deficiencies IMO.

He has nothing left to prove in the minors. If you know he will take in AAA then so does every other team in mlb.  He needs to get on track in the majors. Unfortunately, he needs regular, consistent at bats go get on a roll. So you are right. Sooner or later they will have to bite the bullet and make him their regular leftfielder.

Not sure there will be any regular OF (except maybe Myers) next season ... just more mix and match depending on the pitcher, ballpark, and who is hot (or not). Even Myers will probably be found in LF then CF the RF then rerun. Sort of the opposite of what I expect in the INF. Can't say that any of the others have "earned" the full time regular status and not sure any will. That may be the state of affairs until Trammell and Olivares get their shots in late 2020-21. Then wait for the development (hopefully) of some one or two out of the young prospects in a few years. (side: still think that IF Arias' bat plays at the higher levels ... with his glove ... one of the "regular" OF positions will become Tatis'. Arm for RF elite ... speed to cover ground.)

Also would be surprised they land a legit "regular" OF via trade or FA ... maybe just an upgraded rotational option.

Tatis is going to stay at SS until he can't. His value is maximized where he is. They are not going to move him.

As I said..........if this team expects to contend next season and Josh Naylor is starting in the OF we’re in trouble.

Its not “just” his defense.

He just isn’t hitting enough for his defense to not be an issue.

Why is everyone willing to settle for below average on a team that’s supposed to contend?

We need guys who can get on base...play great defense and run.

That is “not” Josh Naylor.
