Don’t forget Franchy.

IMO he will be given first shot at CF next year with Margot.

Of course...health wise we can’t count on him at all.But he will be here in the Spring.

Naylor needs to be 5th OF,backup 1b and LH ph.

Or traded to A.L.

Naylor needs to be traded .... AL as a DH/1B but would work as a 1B in the NL.

As for Cordero ... not counting on him and not really all that optimistic about his upside anymore. He is not a good defensive OF at any slot as I recall, has a lot of issues with LHP, and he is another strikeout machine. Maybe a bench player as a LHH power option if he can stay healthy but after 2018-19 ... not sure he can and his limited on-field production has not been compelling. Will be 25 ... the clock is ticking.

Padres Call Up Austin Allen, Option Eric Yardley

I guess they wanted Allen eligible for the playoff roster. 🙂

I’d still like to see what Franchy could do with 500 AB’s with this “new” ball.

A true platoon with Margot and Cordero could be much more productive than any OF situation we’ve had in many years.

Now, as noted in a tweet from MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell, Cordero is back on the rehab trail. While it was a wonky elbow that sidelined Cordero for most of 2018 and the beginning of this year, it was a hurt quad that has delayed his rehab for the last two months. Saturday marked Cordero’s first game in the resumption of his rehabilitative assignment, as the outfielder appeared at DH in the Arizona League. Manager Andy Green, however, has apparently learned to be cautiously optimistic in regard to Franchy’s injuries–with the key word being “cautiously”. “He’s on the path toward returning,” Green said. “It’s not a short path, though.”

His "return" yesterday triggers the question as to how the Padres will approach getting him more on-field work before ST (if they do). Sept call-up? Fall instructs? Winter Ball? Would think after limited playing time in the past two seasons they would want him a bit sharper in ST to actually compete for an OF position. Worst case ... since he has minor. league options .. a AAA start?

Do think Cordero is "safe" on the 40 man this winter .... but does his presence justify a non-tender of Jankowski given what appears to be a tight winter 40 man with the 60 day DLs and rule 5 protects pushing quiet a few off the roster? Risk if Cordero is "not ready" to play ML CF ... back to this year with Margot / Myers?

I guess Cordero could get some AZ AB until they shut down this weekend and get his rehab bumped to LE (?) for another week. Doubt they do both but maybe a question on adding Cordero OR Jankowski when the active rosters expand if they are done with Jankowski and want to see more of Cordero before the winter to determine if they need to pursue a LHH CF option to pair with Margot.

Cordero is a China Doll....fragile like no other and his swing has so many holes in it that if he were a boat he would sink. His defense has never been anything to write home about yet  6 or 7 of the 8 people on this forum seem to think he is the second coming of Willie Mays.

I guess he is cheap enough at 500K but at some point you would like to at least get some sort of return instead of throwing money away.

Our baserunning has been atrocious this season.

Todays game is a good example.

A week before the rosters expand ... not sure who the Padres will add with all the injuries.

Healthy position players are Jankowski in EP ... then Torrens and Olivares in AMA which may be in the playoffs and the Padres may prefer them to get the playoff experience.

Healthy pitchers are Reyes and Yardley in EP .... Margevicius and Guerra in AMA (same issue as position players).

Open question to who may come off the IL ... maybe Stock (in rehab) ... maybe Richards (rehab seems to be halted) ... maybe Nix (rehab) ... maybe Kennedy (rehab halted?) ... none have done a top of pitching in rehabs, so hard to envision them contributing much if added. No idea where Morejon and Edwards stand (but not pitching). Cordero just started getting some ABs in rehab ... would he contribute in a call-up?

Plus with the 40 man filled ... not really sure they will add a non-roster type (which they could do with another 60 day IL move) unless it is for a player they plan to add this winter anyway ... and don't see any of them yet ML ready.

Jankowski ... Reyes .... Yardley ... then ????????????

I think given:  Injury situation, last year of unlimited call-ups, being out of it, room on 40-man if needed, & guys they need to evaluate it will be all hands on deck for Padres with call-ups:

Before 9/1:  Jake Nix is due to come off IL.  Seems likely to be activated (today?) with either Erlin or maybe Wingenter down to possibly return when eligible.  May just leave the guy down to yield innings to others needing evaluation.  Conceivable they actually DFA Erlin as a last chance before Sept for him to latch on with a team needing pen length/help?

9/1:  Definitely Jankowski.  With El Paso unlikely to make playoffs, probably all of:  Stock, G. Reyes, & Yardley.

After AA playoffs:  Definitely Javier Guerra.  Out of options next year, so need the look.  I think Edward Olivares has earned it, but he would be the 7th OF if F. Cordero does return.  Hopefully G. Richards also able to get a few MLB games in.

No:  Leaves only Margevicius & Torrens as not recalled; no point unless injuries dictate it.  I also don't see point in Morejon returning:  leave the innings for others to get evaluated.  Pads would "only" have 6-7 SP's including 1-2 probably pitch/inning limited, but about 11 RP's.

Whaddya got on new Padre Nick Martini?  Looks like an OF version of Greg Garcia. Which is not a criticism.

In somewhat related news I got SD moving Myers as an offseason priority. He's become that guy at work who has no role, doesn't do crap to contribute, but can't be let go "yet" for some reason. Everyone knows he's gone including him, but we all pretend otherwise.

I view him as having been totally mishandled for reasons that have been beaten to death. He is so talented.  Maturity issues plus suboptimal situations the cause of failure?

RE Myers, I put a lot of the blame on Green to be honest with you. We can all look at stats that pretty much prove where he should both bat and play defense. But we get the standard, he's athletic enough to play multiple roles. Learn your guys AG, he might have the physical tools, but is obviously short of the 6th tool, the brain. He apparently can not handle being jacked around the field and up and down in the line up. Watch SD eat 75% of his salary to trade him, and he becomes that $20M player that many here think he can be, because he doesnt get messed with all season.
