Quote from BoosterSD on August 23, 2019, 12:53 pmDoes anyone else think that this needs to be a statement game/series for Paddock and SD this weekend. I know BOS is not the same caliber team as last season, however, they are still an upper level team in the AL with an above average offense and a pitching staff that leaves something to be desired this year.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 23, 2019, 1:17 pmTotally agree Booster.
Time for Paddack to take what he's learned( not to be so over the plate when he's ahead in the count) and put it to practice.
Be a good night to see Chris work into the 7th or 8th, for us and for him!

Quote from fenn68 on August 23, 2019, 2:40 pmNot sure any 59-67 team in late August can even have a statement game beyond they still are playing hard.
As for Paddack ... he has pitched 115 innings in 2019 ...25 more than in 2018. When is that line crossed with “overworking” him as a young rookie arm? Is his command issue (pitching to the corners vs just over the plate) partly due to fatigue? How many more pitches does he have left in 2019? Padres have to be concerned ... beyond any injury concern .... creating bad habits trying to overcome fatigue.
Think we may be asking too much too soon from a rookie .. no matter his potential. Learning is does take time and reps.

Quote from fenn68 on August 23, 2019, 5:59 pmsort of a one off item to consider ... Sinclair Broadcasting has acquired 21 regional sports networks for FOX ... including FoxSportSD which carries the Padres.
Probably no short run impact ... but different management approaches businesses differently .... MIGHT we see a change in how games are covered and the broadcast team? Fox was a big money player .... Sinclair not so much.
One thing to watch out for is how Sinclair deals with the carriers (e.g. DISH, Cox, Spectrum, etc.) vs. how Fox dealt with them on carrying rights.

Well......definitely a statement being made tonight.
Both by Paddack and the Sox Offense.
Let’s see if the Padres Offense can make some kind of statement themselves.

Quote from 84padres on August 24, 2019, 9:25 amNot to disregard the rest of this year but looking forward we still need a #1 starter. Paddock and Lamet should be a good 2- 3 combination with Richards and Lucchesi and Quantrill and Lauer to fight for 2 or 3 spots with the left out 1 to relief . Also should include Gore on an innings limit to fill # 5 spot. Bullpen should have Yates Strahm Munoz and hopefully a healthy Castillo. Could also have Baez and Perdomo. That's a decent 13 man staff barring injuries which will surely happen. Still will have a few depth pieces in minors such as Wingentner Morejon and a few others. After the season ends time to cut loose Stammen Stock Erlin Yardley and Edwards . I would try to keep Guerra and give him a chance in minors. We really need the offense to improve OBA which I am hopeful a few can . Would cut Kinsler and keep France and Garcia for infield depth. Outfield is trickier, right now a combo of Margot Naylor Myers and Renfroe. I would like to Olivares given a chance for backup but he doesn't solve the lefty hitting platoon partner for Margot which might make Jankowski a keeper. I'm not sure I see a championship team there but should be a big step forward in 2020 as long as we have decent health. I think we have a lot more pieces in place than any other year in a long time. The future is pretty bright

Agree that a #1 SP is needed but probably would use the money / trade chips instead to improve the OF situation ... buy some time to see what we have in Gore / Patino / Morejon adding to Quantrill / Paddack / Lamet / Lucchesi ... at least for 2021.
Just don’t see that impact OF (or even enough of quality) in the system and arriving near term so that is probably were I would focus.
For now Hosmer - Urias - Tatis - Machado - Garcia - France as the INF is not the problem ... plus a lot of potential INF talent is coming soon. (Side ... heard a lot of speculation that Kinsler will not be back).
Hard to replace the entire OF in one winter .. at least with a full set of upgrades ... so likely that secures Margot as a legit defensive CF who still has upside. After that?
Renfroe can field but can’t do anything offensively except the HR ... post All Star (118 AB) 186/270/331 with 47K ... full season is close to his career. If you want OBP ... he is not your man. Naylor can hit but can’t field at all. Jankowski can field but has no ability to hit LHP and when he does hit it is “weak” contact. Myers is ... well enough said there.
The problem is not identifying who we may want to upgrade from ... it is identifying the upgrade players and how to get them (without hurting other spots in the future).
I would expect that Naylor and Renfroe ... maybe even Jankowski ... would have takers in a trade if the ask was something like a decent low minor league prospect. Myers and this remaining $61MM ... no so much. Getting to the point where to move him off the roster will require eating about $40MM at least (but the team will pay one way or the other) and not expect anything back ... maybe even add a mid-level prospect or two. Maybe bundling him with Lauer or Lucchesi might reduce the pay down.
Who is (or may be) on the market to improve the OF .... keeping in mind they are not signing or dealing for any $20MM/year types?

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 24, 2019, 1:45 pmDon’t forget Franchy.
IMO he will be given first shot at CF next year with Margot.
Of course...health wise we can’t count on him at all.But he will be here in the Spring.
Naylor needs to be 5th OF,backup 1b and LH ph.
Or traded to A.L.
