I forgot.......it’s 2018.

Watching 160 games and “seeing’ every player every day doesn’t mean anything.

It’s WAR!

If you're "seeing" an MVP in what Freddy Galvis does on the field, I'd be happy to refer you to a good optometrist and/or a psychiatrist who can write you a scrip for a good anti-hallucinogen.

I don't know the source of this ...

"The Seibu Lions are planning to post Yusei Kikuchi after the season.
Sources close to the situation have indicated that the Lions have
already agreed to allow Kikuchi to pursue his dreams of playing in the
Majors. Kikuchi could formally select an agent after the regular season.
Agent possibilities are said to include Scott Boras, Arn Tellem, and
the Wasserman Media Group.

Scouts from teams that have appeared at Kikuchi’s games include the
Phillies, Padres, Dodgers, Royals, Red Sox, Yankees, Diamondbacks,
Giants, Brewers, Rangers, Rays, and Indians. Nikkan Gendai believes the
Padres and Dodgers are the current front runners."

While I agree that Galvis is not the player you build a team around, I agree with MrP that he is not as bad as WAR makes him out to be. When I looked at stats last night, he is top 10 for NL SS in hits, doubles, triples, and steals. Yes, he got caught quite a bit stealing and his BA and OBP could be better; but still a very solid MLB player at a hole for SD the last 4 years easy. Defensively, he might not track well in whatever new stats they are trying to create and use; however, when he gets his glove on a ball he does make the play with very few errors. And we really have no one better until what, at least the ASB next year.

MLBTradeRumors (plus some others) have had versions of this report.

As always it will be price but Padres need SP ... so he should be considered. "Only 27" with 2 strong offerings (FB/Slider combo). Last year in the 92-92 FB range but was in the past up to 98. One concern is some shoulder issues last season cutting into his velocity. That has cut into his expect price tag (maybe) which a couple of years ago was speculated at $100MM (??? # years).

Money in at of it self does not seem to be the issue and more has to do with the scouting of his stuff and concern of health. Speculation is that Makita might be a help in getting him signed if they go that way.

Signing him will get likely yield a multi-year deal and given the need for Padre SP for the next few years until (and if) the prospects in the minors develop into a effective ML arms. Even for 2020 can we predict with any certainty FIVE ML quality SP? Lauer / Lucchesi are good candidates then the next three is wishing and hoping. He may be cheaper than a ML FA pitcher of similar quality and would not require dealing prospects to trade for one.

I seems that the Padres are locked into Tatis as the SS of the future ... maybe mid-season 2019 but clearly by 2020 ... and NOT even considering a move to 3B. Galvis will probably find a new home (think Philadelphia if they do not sign Machado) and get a better contract than the Padres would offer with also being able to continue as a SS. He is not unaware that Tatis is the quickly coming future and will not want to lose his SS / full time player role unless his market totally folds.

Galvis is a slightly below average offensive SS and basically average defensive SS (consistent with little range) so may fit well for a team with a real SS deficiency as a consistent supporting player until a better option emerges.

This response might be better served in the "GM" thread. If Galvis is not a hot commodity on the FA market, I can see a fit in returning to SD, especially if we can trade Myers. Galvis can start the season as SS, giving CV a chance to show if he can improve against RHP, he was excellent against LHP. Then when Tatis is ready and depending on what CV does in the 1st half, I can see either Galvis and CV splitting 3B with Galvis then being the super utility guy that can spell/add a LHB at 3B, SS, 2B, or LF and maybe even CF if neededs. Or if CV stubbles, then Galvis becomes the 3B until the arrival of Potts.

For a little glimmer of hope for the offense in 2019 .... based on OPS by position, except for catcher (which was about the MLB average) all the other positions were below average (hence a pretty poor team result).

However, the Padres had a lot of bodies in various positions over the course of the year and IF the incumbents can play a full state and hold their 2018 stats ... might get the team up to at least average. Consider these OPS comparisons league vs. incumbent:

C ..... 676 vs Hedges 711 (I know that is hard for some to believe but hitting catchers are dinosaurs)

1B .... 760 vs Hosmer 720 (but career 773 as a mix of good and bad seasons)

2B ... 712 vs. Urias TBD (Padres were at 603 in 2018 so Urias has to be an improvement)

SS ... 724 vs. TBD until Tatis arrives ( at his arrival could see something better than 2018)

3B ... 749 vs. Myers 764 (he was actually a plus in 2018 and for the 2016-17 sat around 795 while playing a full season)

LF ... 745 vs Renfroe 806 (will he continue to improve)

CF ... 721 vs. Margot 676 (OK the weak spot unless he returns to his 2017 of 721 or just improves as a 24 year old)

RF ... 759 vs. Reyes 838 (can he retain is 2018)

If they put in a bench that is decent they actually have a legit shot with the current roster to become AVERAGE to slightly ABOVE AVERAGE offensively. (they have indicated that they want more OBP with some hope that Urias / Tatis become part of that solution.

Pen is still good ... so the real concern is finding 5 effective SP.

Galvis is a slightly below average offensive

That's simply not true.

30 shortstops had 400 trips to the plate this year.

He's in the 23rd percentile for getting on base.

He's in the 20th percentile for slugging.

He's in the 30th percentile for strikeout rate.

He'd need to improve significantly to be merely 'slightly below average.'

If Villanueva stubbles, it'll be easy enough to shave him from the roster! 🙂

I never said he "was an MVP" player.

But could the argument be made that he was "ours"....sure.

It's not like the Padres have many choices....you yourself pointed out two other "better in your opinion" options of which one only played in half our games and the other wasn't good enough in the first half to force himself into an everyday job.

My point was....and remains.....the fact that we don't have an obvious choice and that the light hitting Freddy Galvis is even a consideration is a microcosm of Padre baseball.

We need offense...have almost always needed offense.

We can't seem to develop offense....have not been able too in more years than most on this site have been alive.

When will we have a guy who we drafted/signed Internationally  make multiple All Star games?

I keep waiting and keep being disappointed.

I will say that Franmil Reyes and Franchy Cordero give me hope.....along with "maybe" Renfroe.
