Watching 160 games and “seeing’ every player every day doesn’t mean anything.
It’s WAR!
If you're "seeing" an MVP in what Freddy Galvis does on the field, I'd be happy to refer you to a good optometrist and/or a psychiatrist who can write you a scrip for a good anti-hallucinogen.
I never said he "was an MVP" player.
But could the argument be made that he was "ours"....sure.
It's not like the Padres have many choices....you yourself pointed out two other "better in your opinion" options of which one only played in half our games and the other wasn't good enough in the first half to force himself into an everyday job.
My point was....and remains.....the fact that we don't have an obvious choice and that the light hitting Freddy Galvis is even a consideration is a microcosm of Padre baseball.
We need offense...have almost always needed offense.
We can't seem to develop offense....have not been able too in more years than most on this site have been alive.
When will we have a guy who we drafted/signed Internationally make multiple All Star games?
I keep waiting and keep being disappointed.
I will say that Franmil Reyes and Franchy Cordero give me hope.....along with "maybe" Renfroe.

That's simply not true.
30 shortstops had 400 trips to the plate this year.
He's in the 23rd percentile for getting on base.
He's in the 20th percentile for slugging.
He's in the 30th percentile for strikeout rate.
He'd need to improve significantly to be merely 'slightly below average.'
While this is true......and at the risk of "over" defending Galvis.....it doesn't seem fair to compare Freddy to the Lindors,Machados and Story's of the league.
I know you have to when comparing by position...but no one expected Galvis to hit for power for instance.
Maybe I was more impressed with his season based solely on my/our expectations of him?
Did anyone expect him to be TWO rbi's away from leading the team?
I mean....really?
And yes...that is helped by playing everyday......but isn't that something that points to his value?
Edit:Hosmer actually had 11 "more" AB's than Freddy but only 2 more RBI.

Quote from fenn68 on October 2, 2018, 2:17 pmSort of two different discussions going on here about Galvis:
First, Galvis performance in MLB as a SS. Always can pick the stats you like but looking at 3 year offense stats (wRC+) he is a lowly 80 sitting at #31. He is not a good offensive option despite his late season 2018 spurt.
Defense stats are always questionable and are a bit of buyer choice ... especially with Galvis. In 2018 he was 9th best in Defensive Runs Save at 9 (currently a favorite of some) ... he was the BEST with the lowest error rate ... BUT at the same time his UZR/150 was -3.8 landing only at 19th best and his dWAR was just 2.8 also sitting at #19. So some good some below average ... so ?
Second, and this is where this started, was he valuable on the 2018 Padres that lost 96 games with no other offensive player that played all that much or, if they did play, did not really perform.
So, he could be seen as a below average ML SS and at the same time be one of the most valuable 2018 Padres given the other 2018 Padres. Still, his overall history would not warrant resigning him barring a really short term / low cost deal where he understands his ultimate fate as a utility man.

Just give the job to Guerra until Tatis is ready. Playing Javier won't keep us from making the playoffs next year. Save the money.

Maybe more until Tatis arrives. Since I have no faith that Guerra will hit over .200 or get an OBP over .200, unless they find some better filler SS who can go to the bench when Tatis arrives .... would be fine with Urias at SS and given Spangenberg another run at 2B.
Padres seem OK with looking at Urias at SS (did it in the minors with OK results) and clearly have no issues with position movement in general (see Myers).

Quote from sportwarrior on October 4, 2018, 12:24 pmYeah, personally I am less ok with Guerra than a lot of you. I have zero faith in his ability to hit in even a minimally acceptable capacity. To that point, I have no problem with bringing Galvis back on a cheap deal, provided the team clearly defines his role as a placeholder until the kids are ready.

I agree, use a combination of Guerra & Urias until Tatis is ready. Go Pads!

I was with you guys about 6 weeks ago, but to see Guerra at the plate in MLB after a full year at AAA was disheartening. He is an automatic out. If there was a way to DH for him and bat the pitcher I would strongly consider it. Defense was as advertised. He has a hose.
This team needs to be better next year if they are really going to contend in 2020. You do not just flip a switch after another year like this one and suddenly you are contender. I'm not saying they have to field an all-star at SS, but it would be unwise to count on Tatis being ready by June or July. Unlike Guerra he has zero AB's above AA. What if Tatis gets hurt? Suddenly instead of Guerra and Urias as stopgaps they are playing the lion's share of the time at SS (thus weakening the 2B defense - did you enjoy that crapshow this year?).
I say bring on someone who can we know can play both sides of the ball at SS in The Show. If you don't want Galvis back (I'm ambivalent), how about Mercer, Iglesias or someone I am too lazy to research to find on a team where he can play a credible SS and might be UL behind a good SS. A guy who could slide into the UL role when Tatis is really ready. I'd be open to a multi year deal for the right guy. The payroll is ridiculously low, there is no money issue in this discussion (except no Machado $$; I disagree with that notion, but that's another topic).
How about Marwin Gonzalez on a three year deal for like $24 million? WS experience. Can really be the "Super Utility" guy that can play 2-3 times per week and won't kill you if he has to start for a month.
Thanks all and peace.

Quote from fenn68 on October 8, 2018, 7:40 amAgree that Guerra has shown nothing to warrant a role on the 25 man roster in 2019 (maybe not even the 40 man roster given the potential roster crunch to cover the better prospects from Rule 5). Tatis maybe the super star SS of the future but reliance on him being ML ready to start 2019 (or even in 2019) would be a foolish assumption. Puts Preller in a tough situation needing a ML SS for the short run but not the long term.
If they do nothing, I guess they could go with Urias at SS (Spangy at 2B) initially ... and perish the thought Villanueva the back-up SS until Tatis is ready.
Now getting a FA option (and there are a few) to sign a short term reasonable contract early may be hard (for the better options). Have to think the FA knows Tatis is set-up to displace him and assuming the better FA actually want to play to establish a record for the next FA they would be reluctant to sign early or a one year deal.
Preller does have a bit of an advantage (if he really does not care which FA he signs since none are great shakes) by just waiting .... seems to me too many FA SS (all about the same) for too few openings. Just let some sign and wait out the rest until they panic for a job and should get one on a one year deal and bargain price.
P.S. would be surprised if Marwin Gonzalez did not resign with Houston on a multi-year deal for more than whatever makes sense for the Padres.
