Regular Season Discussion

Last year Galvis was traded to the Padres in his last control year ... PHIL wanted to go to their hot shot rookie SS (J.B. Crawford) and maybe avoid Galvis' $6.825MM contract. So this will be his 1st FA year.

Having said that, it is still a supply and demand game. The supply side has Galvis, Isturis, Hechavarria, and a couple of others. The demand side from "contending teams" is weak and those would be the teams that might go multi-year to secure a quality SS. So that generally leaves the non-contenders who are unlikely to go hot and heavy after these SS ... even if they "need' a SS. They may be good but not that good.

So, good chance Galvis gets boxed into a 1 year (maybe 2, maybe 1 plus an option year / buyout) and since he is a Padre and well received by the club ... a chance he is signed (he also appears to like playing here).

The wild card is Philadelphia and Machado (as a SS). Good chance the make the big pitch for him BUT if he sign with them, going back to Galvis (who really liked Philadelphia) is possible. Crawford does not look ready to be the SS for a contender and Philadelphia is playing as a contender so maybe they connect the dots. Make the case for Galvis to "test FA" unless the Padres come in early with an aggressive offer (not likely). Sort of sets up a how long do the Padres wait for that to settle or move on to one of the other fillers SS to bridge to Tatis (late 2019 or 2020).

As an alternative, Preller might just get a "second tier" SS who can become the back-up to Tatis at some point via trade .... someone like Erik Gonzalez of Cleveland who is blocked by Lindor but a decent defensive SS with multiple years control and a decent bat. Basically a plus utility INF who could bridge to Tatis and then back-up both INF/OF. Just a different line of attack Preller could use.

Of course we traded for him.....not sure what I was thinking.

Brutal first inning for Nix.

That was hard to watch!

Heard a interview with A J Cassavell covering Myers at 3B. Sort of as a side comment from a guy that is covering / around the Padres ... was that Myers is NOT the 3B of the future (did not say who was). Rather, he may morph into the new breed of versatile "stars" and appear at 3B but also LF, RF, 1B ... giving the manager more match-up flexibility which seems to be the trend in today's MLB.  See Maddon with Zobrist, Bryant, Happ, Baez .... guessing he is somewhat attuned to what the Padres are thinking.

Versatility is not just for the bench players anymore apparently. Following that line of thinking, we should look for continued devaluation of one dimensional players (unless they be a superstar) and increased value in those athletes that can show up all around. Padres have been drafting that way (SS and CF) and really avoiding the big bat 1B/DH types.

That should be bad news for the prospects like Allen (covered by a more athletic Mejia) and Naylor who become more likely to be trade chip fodder if other teams need some C/1B/DH offense. Of the current roster ... not great for Asuaje, Pirela, Villanueva, Reyes, and maybe even Renfroe but might keep Jankowski and Spangenberg around a bit longer. We should see some trend as the winter 40 man gets reshaped and as trades evolve.

Does anyone know where to find the team-record-with-player-in-game stat?  I checked Baseball Reference but couldn't find.  Reason I ask is it subjectively feels like the team has played better WITHOUT Myers this season. I actually like Wil, but he was out the whole time the team played well in June and again last week.

I know I could do the math myself, but that wouldn't be the 2018 way.

It’s bad enough to lose every night......but does it really have to be over by the 2nd inning every game?

Thought that might work!

Well, do we see Asuaje recalled today to replace Villanueva or do we finally see the addition of Urias to the 40 man and given a shot in SD? I would imagine that we see Spangy at 3B for the weekend until Myers heals from the nasal injury; and then with CV out, Myers at 3B for the balance of the year if SD is smart. If Myers can hang at 3B, we then have a productive bat at 3B and a hole taken care of until/if Potts forces a move at sometime.

Urias and Mejia will not be called up until the El Paso season is over.  Bank on it.  Why would you take the chance of a championship away from these guys, esp Urias who has been there all season?  Wouldn't make sense.  Its basically like Renfroe and Margot 2 years ago.

Doubt Urias or Mejia are called up until EP season ends. I expect the expected of Asuaje.

As for Sept call-ups we should take Guerra out of the discard pile (he is on the 40 man) given his second half hot run. His current run creates an interesting dilemma for the start of next season considering:

Tatis is the SS of the future... but likely not until late 2019 at the earliest.

Galvis is a FA and IF they can resign him for 1 year it will be at best around his current $7MM salary

Guerra is an elite fielder ... will just be 23 next year ... is currently hitting.

Do the Padres take the gamble with Guerra to start 2019 knowing Tatis is coming soon? As much as Galvis is getting hyped ... still just a .230-.240 hitter. Time for a bad team to make the big upside gamble?
