Pre-2021 Planning
Quote from Randy Manese on October 11, 2020, 12:06 pmTo add to the above post, the Padres are paying 8M to Pom, 4M to Stammen and 2M to Johnson. Arbitration eligibles Perdomo will probably get in the 1.0 - 1.1 M range while Strahm could go up to 1.7M; then there are still other arbitration eligibles Pagan and Altavilla. These are currently the costliest members of the bullpen but are they the best members of the bullpen, i.e., could you substitute other lower cost relief pitchers that project to be just as effective? Given that Pom will not be going anywhere, the answer should be YES on almost every other pitcher listed. Big market teams like the Cubs and White Sox, Philadelphia, Boston and even the Angels will be looking for and competing for arms. The opportunity will be there to trade some of the excess that are potentially blocking other arms in the system and cobbling together an even better bullpen that can make it through 162 games. We've done that in the past with Hand, Yates and many others. For this reason, the mindset should be to continually evaluate both your own system as well as other potential free agents and pitchers with promising underlying skills to enhance the current bullpen both in the short and long run. Can't predict the future of who goes and who comes, but my guess is that we will not stand pat, i.e., Rosenthal and Yates won't be the only "current" bullpen pieces that are likely to turn over.

Quote from fenn68 on October 11, 2020, 12:18 pmGiven the way the 40 man sets-up ... probably don't have to make decisions in the pen until late in ST. So, maybe 6 weeks of evaluation to determine who survives ... and 6 weeks to showcase players for a deal before the end of ST.
I guess a winter FA signing or trade may alter that ... don't know who the low hanging fruit is in the mind of the Padres.

Quote from hoffy51 on October 13, 2020, 5:58 amI think the Padres have made all the "big moves" they are going to make, or can afford to make. So, for me, its pretty simple: sign Profar to a three year deal, let Moreland go, and have Pham be the DH next season, while giving Jorge Ona a full year in the minors before coming up and being the DH after Pham leaves; or
Don't sign Profar, play Pham in left field, and have Moreland as the DH next season. The problem, of course, is in 2022 when both Pham and Moreland are gone and we need both a left fielder and a DH.
For my money . . . err . . . the the Padres money, I would much prefer the former than the latter.

I agree. Pomeranz not going anywhere, and doubt Pagan is who should be very good value in 1st year of Arb.
But Perdomo might be non-tendered; can't pay arb salaries to guys spending time in minors. That would "save" about 1 MM (his 950K salary last year). Pierce Johnson & Strahm would be "desirable" trade candidates at 2MM & 3 MM range respectively. Stammen more expensive at 4 MM (+ 1 MM buyout) but less "desirable" (BUT his value over a full season is definitely higher than a short season. Tons of appearances/IP, stays healthy every year); would have to add an asset to get a team to take all or most of his $.
Bottom line: I look for us to trade at least 1 RP for prospect/s or at least salary dump to help make $ available (to try to re-sign Yates). Ironic if "have" to trade Stammen for Yates; the 2 vets who came in together & helped stabilize that pen as Pads grew from a bad to a good team.

Thankfully it sounds relatively minor...
... not the best look that it happened outside Pacers.

Quote from fenn68 on October 13, 2020, 7:37 amI am still hung up on the what the 2021 rules (unless I missed some decisions) ... not knowing the best way to build a roster.
The NL DH was approved for 2020 per special negotiation ... but not 2021. (no DH?)
The expanded roster was approved for 2020 per special negotiation ... but not 2021 (back to 26?)
The modified IL rules were approved for 2020 per special negotiation ... the plan prior from MLB was a 10 day IL for position players and a 15 day IL for pitchers ... (does that alter the selection / mix of the 13 pitchers?)
MLB and the MLBPA COULD do new negotiations ... but WHEN? ... and what will be the final rules?
Preller has to make a call on Moreland 5 days after the World Series ... IF no DH, is $3MM for a LHH PH and no defensive option the best use of that money when PH for the pitcher is the only probably use and in Moreland's case can be neutralized with that LHRP?
IF no DH ... PH for the pitcher will be back ... does that alter the skills of the bench players with "hitters" getting the advantage over "defensive" specialists. The Padres starting eight appear to be "every day" type players so maybe PH and "emergency use" may be the profile.
With 13 pitchers and the 15 day IL for pitchers ... harder to manipulate the pitchers with the liberal use of the 10 IL for "rest". Does that add pressure to keep another "long man" as a spot starter? Does that add more pressure to have pitchers with options to keep the ML roster fresh? Does that add more pressure to have ML ready arms in the minors for call-ups?
Except for the Moreland decision ... Preller does not have to make any early moves (all other GMs are in a similar bind) and combine that with all the financial unknown SHOULD slow down action over the winter ... especially FA ... unless the player(s) fit under any end scenario.
No Winter Meetings (apparently) ... no clarity on fans in the stands for 2021 (limits?) crimping revenues ... unclear rules ... probably delay player movement until late January - February to get the new players in for ST.

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 13, 2020, 11:01 amI would "guess" that GM's have some idea concerning the DH for 2021.
Either way, unless they know it "isn't" returning I'm gonna guess AJ picks up Morelands option.
Better to have him even if there isn't a DH than to not have him if there is.
I would think you could trade him if necessary.

Quote from fenn68 on October 13, 2020, 12:53 pmHave to believe the owners and union have been in discussion on the rules that may apply to 2021 ... and maybe have a good feeling as to whether they can come to an agreement on any changes or revert to pre-2020 agreed rules. However, until they are agreed upon ... a risk.
Doubt either side wants to agree to anything that sets a potential precedent leading into the CBA negotiations that may take a negotiating chip off the table. If there is an agreement on changes for 2021 ... both sides need to see it as “balanced” economically with for both sides and that is not that easy with a limited menu of issues up for discussion.

Don’t really share the thought that the Padres could trade Moreland (at $3MM) except maybe at the trade deadline if the DH is gone in the NL. 15 teams would have lost the need for a DH and the AL already has players for those slots.
IF no DH, and with maybe limited payroll space for upgrades, would the net $2.5MM be better served to add in other spots than a LHH PH? IF they let Moreland go ... and in what should be a FA market with a lot of options ... later they find the DH will be in 2021 ... could they find an equivalent option for that role?
If I really expected the DH ... would pick up Moreland’s option.
