Padres vs. LAA
Quote from MrPadre19 on September 3, 2020, 12:09 pmQuote from fenn68 on September 3, 2020, 11:19 amProfar re-signing is going to be part of a set of difficult decisions this offseason.
Payroll will be the overarching issue ... and not sure anyone will know if the ballparks are going to allow full attendance. If yes, money should be available but if a limitation of say 25% of capacity ... about 11,000 for PETCO .. which is about a third of the Padres attendance in 2019 and after losing money in 2019 .. might cause some financial based decisions. I am guessing that if they bring back Pham, exercise Moreland’s option, and add the arbitration increases for Clevinger, Davies, and Lamet ... should be up around $135MM.
Profar, Yates, Rosenthal, Richards, Castro all FA ... question where they need to focus any more payroll. Or do they non-tender Pham (not helping so far) and “save” $8-9MM to deploy on a closer and/or Profar for LF? With the assumption that Gore-Patino-Morejon are at he cusp of ML success ... would you consider dealing Davies (in his final year) to save money there to deploy in another slot ... risk of two of the rookies starting vs. one.
Again, could be interesting this winter.
Yates,Richards and Castro should all be easily replaced from within.
Depending on what other offers Profar gets I'd like to bring him back for his versatility.
Same with Rosenthal but if Castillo/Pagan/Adams/Pomeranz are all healthy I think we'd be OK at the back end of the Pen next season without bringing him back.Who knows, maybe another off season with Guerra pays off and he takes the next step towards dependability?

Should Profar continue on his current pace, he'd be my full time LF in 2021.

Will be interesting roster management ...
are the Padres better off with Pham (1 year / $9MM) or Profar (2 years / $9MM .. $4.5MM per year would seem in the right zone) and use the difference to upgrade elsewhere? Can’t have both.
When the Padres win the World Series with Profar ... there should be a desire to keep the one that got you there ... plus more versatile and younger. Profar seems like a real personality fit on this cohesive team. I would go the Profar route.
That extra $4.5MM in 2020 could get them a significant upgrade for the #4 OF or the reserve middle INF (or both) if they choose to move on for Garcia, Allen, Mateo.
Side: on Pham, one of the reasons he was added was ... supposedly ... his ability to keep the other players accountable and that does not seem like a role given the roster today ... actually after seeing some interviews with him before the injury not sure he would not be a drag on the roster as it currently exists. He seems always grumpy / angry. Yes, he has a history of hitting (but not a good fielder) but didn’t look good before the injury. Paying $9MM for one year with the risk he does not significantly upgrade the offense might just not make business sense.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 3, 2020, 1:23 pmPrior to the start of this shortened season, Pham was being counted on to be the hitting anchor of an outfield of which the other 2/3ds we couldn't depend on to be productive. We knew his arm was healing but we didn't know he would get COVID or break a hamate bone. He started slowly but so did many other hitters up and down the majors, like Alonso, Yelich, Bellinger, etc. Pham, even at 32, has been extremely productive and would get a very decent return in another major leaguer or prospects even in the year leading up to his FA. Profar would kill to have a career like Pham has and should continue to have next year. I like Profar's enthusiasm and versatility but unless you resign him for more than 5.7 million, his current salary although pro-rated he's going to walk. About a month ago, people were crying to get rid of Profar and saying he wasn't worth near the salary or the prospects we gave up for him. In my opinion, don't see him as the full-time LF for the Padres in 2021. Pham yes, Profar no, even though he's on a hot streak this past week. Look at the most recent stats of the two in 2019 and 2018, particularly OBP and OPS. The only way Padres get rid of Pham is because of the money crunch and go for someone less expensive but potentially equally productive - don't see that being Profar. 6-7 million is a lot to pay a utility player.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 3, 2020, 1:30 pmI was super excited to get an offensive player like Pham.
While the fact that our offense is incredible right now means he isn't as necessary I still would like him to be part of the 2021 team.
He's one more guy who gets on base at an extremely high rate and those don't grow on trees and players go into slumps.
We can't be positive our offense, even with the same guys,is going to be just like this year for a full 162.
Now "if" the money is the issue i would understand moving on from him...I just hope that isn't the only reason.
Profar has been pretty good "lately" but he isn't Tommy Pham on offense.
Lot's will happen between now and when that decision will need t be made....plus I would think we could trade a player like Pham next ST if we have LF covered.
Esp. now that Trammell is not around to take LF.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 3, 2020, 1:36 pmAngels throwing out a lineup with 6 players hitting below .200 after the #3 hitter Rendon. Clevinger should be able to navigate that lineup successfully even though he's not thrown for 8 days. I'm feeling confident we can get to Heaney for enough runs to keep our winning streak going. Go Padres!

Quote from Randy Manese on September 3, 2020, 1:46 pmProfar will be 28 next season and if he finishes strong, it may be the last opportunity he has to get a big contract. I don't think he'd take less than he's making this year for the next two years, just to stay with the team. I'm thinking he's looking for at least 21 million over 3 years - money the Padres probably won't give him.
I think it's great that we can speculate and have differing opinions. Our OF today, with the exception of Grisham, may not look like anything we have out there in 2021. Who knows? Still have to get rid of Myers and his albatross contract, right?

Quote from fenn68 on September 3, 2020, 3:12 pmMyers taking batting practice and should be in the game tonight.
Think the Padres were waiting to hear the OK for MLB returning him for the IL ... hence the delay in issuing the starting line-up.
