Padres vs. LAA
Quote from 84padres on September 2, 2020, 6:45 pmBottom 3 looks a little weak to me. Would've liked to see Nola in there after a day off.

Well, want to break the ice with Castro and going against Tehran who has been bad this season might be the better time to get him in.
Don't know the match-up for tomorrow or the OAK series .. but Nola probably with get the starts against the assumed more difficult pitchers.
Have to pick your spots.

Quote from fenn68 on September 2, 2020, 7:47 pmBad call to give Otani a walk (would have been the 3rd out) ... opened the door for Trout.
Side note: maybe it is just me but Grisham seem to get well above the norm of bad calls against him. Maybe because he doesn't swing at close bad pitches ... has to frustrate him.

Quote from fenn68 on September 2, 2020, 7:52 pmProfar is clearly making a statement that he belongs in LF offensively and defensively.
Maybe his stock has risen to be re-signed in the off-season even if they bring Pham back. 162 game season has more wear and tear and Profar clearly can play multiple roles in the INF / OF.

Quote from Ben Davey on September 2, 2020, 11:26 pmTodays game was exactly what we were talking about with having complete roster. Until the 8th inning, Grisham, Tatis, Machado, and Cro were all having bad games. AND STILL we were in a tied game and threatening for more... AND that is probably also with two starting OF on the IL and our starting catcher having the day off. It is so nice not to hope that Hedges gets hit and a couple lucky bounces to flip the order over for Tatis
THAT is what a quality offense looks like

Profar is a PERFECT fit for this team next year... but he would be on the bench way more. Still, in a 162 game season, he would be first off the bench at all 4 INF positions + LF (with current roster: offseason need is a "true" 4th OF), plus would frequently play either in field to spell guys or, more likely, as DH vs LHP, there would still be a lot of playing time to be had.
He seems to like it here, and handled being displaced @ 2B fine... but did just "move positions" as a starter.
Padres will pursue him aggressively I believe; will come down to if he wants more likely playing time as potential starter somewhere else.

Quote from fenn68 on September 3, 2020, 11:19 amProfar re-signing is going to be part of a set of difficult decisions this offseason.
Payroll will be the overarching issue ... and not sure anyone will know if the ballparks are going to allow full attendance. If yes, money should be available but if a limitation of say 25% of capacity ... about 11,000 for PETCO .. which is about a third of the Padres attendance in 2019 and after losing money in 2019 .. might cause some financial based decisions. I am guessing that if they bring back Pham, exercise Moreland’s option, and add the arbitration increases for Clevinger, Davies, and Lamet ... should be up around $135MM.
Profar, Yates, Rosenthal, Richards, Castro all FA ... question where they need to focus any more payroll. Or do they non-tender Pham (not helping so far) and “save” $8-9MM to deploy on a closer and/or Profar for LF? With the assumption that Gore-Patino-Morejon are at he cusp of ML success ... would you consider dealing Davies (in his final year) to save money there to deploy in another slot ... risk of two of the rookies starting vs. one.
Again, could be interesting this winter.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 3, 2020, 11:27 amThe Clevinger game. This will be an interesting game to watch, maybe more so looking into the dugout and seeing what is going on vice how well Clevinger pitches. Of all the players obtained, I get a sense that it still is a "wait and see" kind of approach by the core players, given what transpired in Cleveland. If he shows he has the heart and fire that many of the guys have that reflect a team over self persona, then he has a better chance to be accepted as a teammate, otherwise, he might be cooly received and just something they have to live with. I'm hoping he does fit in and we solidify our rotation for this year and at least next year.
We will be missing Myers this game, so it also will be interesting to see how the lineup looks against a lefty. Rumor has it that Campusano might be called up, but that doesn't make sense unless you send him down before the post-season rosters are set. With regard to Campusano, generally considered the 3rd rated catcher in the minors after Rutschman and Bart, mainly because the other two are better defensively. When I saw him last in spring training, he looked much more athletic than when I saw him in Lake Elsinore, so maybe some of those defensive question marks have been erased. I'd love to get a peek at him - he's not that far away.
