Padres vs Giants Series

PreviousPage 2 of 4Next

Another hard hit double from Myers ... encouraging and earning more playing time.

On Renfroe ... from observation ... when he signed and early in his career,  his defense was fine but then he bulked up (not sure on him or the organization) but went from around 200 to about 220+ .... seemed to really impact his agility and range (along with some bad reads). This year he looks slimmer and more agile .... result more range in the OF. Regardless of the reason, is performing like one of the better corner OF in MLB.

Quantrill pitched very well ... again. Given his minor league run (stats) a bit surprised but apparently the Padres saw enough in his stuff (and pitching acumen) to bring him carefully along.

Since his promotion he has logged 58 innings with a 3.57 ERA / 1.19 WHIP ... that is good.

Remember he is a rookie and still only 24. Among rookies despite the late call up, he is 8th among NL rookie pitchers in innings and among the most successful.

Soroka (107 innings) .... 2.33 ERA

Paddack (95 innings) ... 2.84 ERA

Quantrill (58 innings) ... 3.57 ERA

Hudson (109 innings) ... 3.61 ERA

Those 4 represent the better NL rookie pitchers (with significant innings) ... maybe Quantrill has more upside / value that we have been projecting.

Bullpen day today with Morejon starting but based on yesterday usage should see Perdomo, Erlin, and Munoz coming in during the game.

New SP rotation is setting up as Lucchesi, Paddack, Lauer, Lamet, and Quantrill with bullpen days to give everyone extra days of rest as needed ... at least until Richards is recalled.

After seeing Strahm again the the pen ... keep him there where is really seems to have a success and could be a very valuable multi inning LHRP. Side note Castillo rehab moved to LE ... maybe be getting close to returning.

Quantril is ahead of Logan Allen IMHO and upside and value projected by some of the people here has proven to be pretty funny.

This guy can't do this...trade him

This guy can't play outfield and is wild....trade him

Trade suggestions for guys that are dogs with different fleas

Funny Stuff.....Pads got a win last night.....if the pitchers today get rocked.....trade them too 🙂

I'll trust AJ for the time being.......until I don't

It is in the nature of fans everywhere to over react based on little but short term gut feelings. That magnified when dealing with young prospects who still need time to develop. Fans see the bad but have trouble evaluating (and valuing) the potential ... and want success ASAP.  So trade everyone with a wart ... see the return and then complain about the bad trade and argue to trade the new guy. Never ends (even on good teams) if short term is the only view.

Frankly, the front offices of teams may have some of the same debate since seeing the raw skills and setting the probability of mastering those skills to be a quality ML player is just plain hard to get right. Plus their job is to delivery a winning team both in the short term and long term. If their ownership supports them. When do you hold onto a player and when do you move on from that prospect. Not easy ... but suspect internally each organization has their view on every prospect ... different from the fans for sure and likely different from the national ranking folks ... hands on knowledge may do a lot in shaping valuations.

Quantrill is a good example as a player who was generally maligned by fans when he was drafted as an over reach then in his lackluster minors journey a lot of trade him, release him, don't give him a roster slot, waste of a draft pick. Now many of the darlings of the fans are faded away while Quantrill is pitching the the ML ... initially successfully. A plus to the Padres for evaluation of stuff, careful development, and patience. Just the fact he is a ML puts him ahead of a lot of prospects in ML systems ... does not have to be an All-Star to be valuable.

So when Preller trades a prospect or ML player it will likely be different than my view (usually is) but will take a breath ... be optimistic ... and just wait for results before whining and complaining.

Let us just hope we are not going to see the next Cashner - Rizzo deal or a repeat of that classic 3 team deal that brought us Myers and cost Turner. How about more Shields for Tatis type deals?

My worry is that Preller seems really strong on evaluation of young prospect adds (in trades, draft, international) but fails in his evaluation of established ML players he adds ... at least what they are worth in terms of contracts or prospects.

I’ve admitted more than once that back before Cal was called up I included him in most trade scenarios.

Have to include someone......and I thought his ranking/value in a trade was higher than his ability for us.

I admit again I was wrong(at least to this point).

But,As he’s pitched well his trade value rises even more.

Im not saying we “should” trade him....but guys like L Allen’s value has dropped.....So we would have to include

more lower level guys along with him to get the same return.

Plus teams are probably calling about Quantrill.

I hope we keep him,but if AJ is serious about a TOR starter like Thor he isn’t gonna get him giving up L.Allen/Jacob Nix/ type prospects.

Count me in as someone who wasn't high on Quantril!

But agree with 3Finger- he's definitely shown more than Allen. The fact that he's a righty makes it even better for the Pads.

If this is the REAL Quantril, he's a keeper.

Morejon couldn't find the plate. Shame.

Going into the season MLB Pipeline had for the Padres:

#6 .... Morejon (now 20) rated “55” and #46 in Top 100

#8 ... L.Allen (now 22) rated  “55” and #76 in Top 100

#11 .. Quantrill (now 24) rated only “50” and not in Top 100

So, if Quantrill looks this good now ... think what “better” pitchers will be when they get the same experience (development) 🙂 Let us not forget that at age 20 Quantrill was in college (with TJ) and at 22 he was unimpressive in the minors.

No way to tell now who will be the better pitcher in 2 years and all are too inexperienced to discount their development and future production. Not writing off any based on the very limited ML exposure.

Yeh, tough start for the 20 year old.

Surprised to see Lauer out of the pen but did not get a lot of work in his last start and not scheduled to go again for day ... so a one inning workout ... went fine.

Myers at 1B and showing his gold glove talent ... couple of nice digs out of the dirt.

Kinsler with a PH single .... his trade stock is soaring!
