Padres vs Giants Series

Go Figure....at the start of the year everybody and their brother thought the Giants would be dead in the water this year and here they are within a couple of games of a Wild Card berth and playing for Bochy like they are possessed....Padre castoff Alex Dickerson is getting some playing time and has put up great numbers

The Padres are 0-4 against them since the All Star Break and this series is a story of two teams that have switched places.

I would have liked to see Munoz pitch another inning last night but.....gotta stay with the little manual about how to manage a game

Hopefully tonight they can get a win

I suspect the Giants will finish well out of the wild card when all is said and done still.

Mejia in LF?

Is there any way this doesn’t at least have something to do with the trade deadline?

Good chance.

Reyes was out of the line-up (and did not PH) supposedly due to “bumps and bruises” but could he be in the trade discussions?

Is Quantrill having this as showcase?

Just a rest for Margot or ? I heard they worked out Garcia in the OF for back-up purposed... apparently that has not worked out.

====

Erlin recalled and L.Allen sent down after pitching on consecutive days.

=====

Recent Dennis Lin update that the Padres have no intention of dealing Urias.

=====

Sunday night / Monday morning may be interesting as the real start to the trade season ... give a couple of days to resolve contracts, physicals and leaving a fall back chance if the deal has a problem, as some do.

Could be some brutal OF play tonight.

Showcasing Myers by playing him in the run up to 7/31?

Myers could go 16 for 16 in the next 4 games and still no takers for him and has contract ... the past two years require a much longer success run. More likely Margot is in discussions and they don’t want him hurt.

Actually Margot would be a likely target for the Mets ... ugly OF defense ... they have not liked Lagares for some time and Conforto is a corner. Maybe a Stroman - Margot - plus a prospect fits NYM want for Syndergaard. Maybe Quantrill - Naylor - prospect gets Stroman to the Mets? Maybe Reyes instead of Naylor? At this stage a lot of maybes.

I would guess that if the Padres made the deal for Syndergaard there is a better chance they try to extend Yates than trade him. Believing they can contend in 2020-21 locking down a top closer ... a low cost one ... would seem to be better than gambling on the kids and better than a prospect return.

With Syndergaard they could be fine with the SP options ... with Yates and the big arm kids they could be fine with the pen .... INF is arguably set .... so the winter target would be upgrading an OF of maybe Myers - Jankowski - Renfroe  with Cordero / Naylor in the wings. Clearly a lot fewer moving parts and still a lot of pieces to put in a deal(s).

Disagree on Myers. If Pads eat enough they'll be takers.

I think he wants out and they want him out. He be gone by Thursday.

Sure if they eat enough but no need to showcase him. And “enough” is not really going to change in a 4 game run.

Still more of a winter meetings deal than a trade deadline ... doubt any contender with money is wanting him for a playoff run.

Into the 5th on a positive note:

Quantrill is pitching like he belong in the bigs (albeit against SF) but he has pitcher well all month.

Renfroe is converting me with his defense. No idea what triggered the change from past seasons (does look trimmer) but giving him a large advantage over Reyes.

Myers .... Mr Clutch ... hits the go ahead double on a hard shot to left .... is the the beginning of the rebound?

A special shout out to Mejia in LF ... caught a deep fly and threw an accurate bullet to 3B narrowly missing the tagging runner from 2B. Not bad for a catcher.

Then Tatis establishes himself even more as a premier ML player ... gets buzzed near the head knocking him down ... gets up then crushes the next pitch for a HR to center. That is a Frank Robinson type response to a knockdown.

SF has been one of the hottest teams for the last 20+ days. They are 18-2 over their last 20 games. So not as easy as you implied.

I think Renfroe has always been good on defense. I dont trust defensive metrics as much as many do.

Myers smoked one last night to CF, so maybe seeing some success from the hard practice that he has been putting in. However, AG just leave him in LF going forward and let him get his bat in shape if possible. Its the best possible option for all involved.

Tatis IS the NL Rookie of the Year. The media wont get this one right, because they love the HR and dont stay up past 10pm to see Tatis play. But you cant name a one dimensional 1B NL ROY when you have a high end SS doing what he is doing with the bat.
