Padres vs Giants Series

Myers initial year at 1st base went REALLY well( dare I say he looked better that year than Hosmer has either year he's been here?) His second year saw a Major regression.

Nice to hear he's looking good in the field. Hope the bat comes around.

My Boy Renfroe does it again.....Great Defense yesterday and has accounted for all 4 runs today....Sac Fly and then a nice 3 run BIG FLY

Atta Boy Hunter 🙂

And yet you still hear his name bantered about in trade talk........

When's the last time we developed an OF with this kind of power and defense? McReynolds?

Another outstanding defensive play by Urias ... second of the game. Given all the plus plus defense we have seen since his return ... at some point he will be in gold glove discussions. Urias - Tatis - Machado will give ground ball pitchers a lot of smiles.

Urias has to hit above .060 at some point though.

He is making his case (offensively and defensively) that he is the OF that survives. Since I do like defense as a factor that plays every game (hitting can be streaky) the OF if he has any offensive chops with defense gets the edge.

IF Myers just comes back to “average” (and before this season he was a poster child for consistency as around .790 OPS) an OF of Myers / Margot-Jankowski / Renfroe would defensively complement the Urias / Tatis / Machado INF and combined make the pitching look that much better.

Since their offense is not that special ... the defensive limited Reyes and Naylor would move to being the trade chips.

Nice to keep as many 2 way players as we can. Specialists are a luxury we can't really afford with our payroll.

Need to keep guys that do it at the dish and in the field.

I'm sorry but Mejia is just terrible behind the plate.....how much longer are they going to keep putting him ahead of Hedges?

The Pitchers can't throw a breaking ball low because he won't stop it and he whiffs on pitches not in the dirt. I'll take Hedges and his .200-.220 BA any day just for his defense.....the pitching staff has confidence in him to block a pitch in the dirt so they can use their whole pitching arsenal as opposed to Mejia.....his bat isn't that much better than Hedges on top of all that. He just isn't a good catcher and I really don't see him becoming one.......Cleveland knew it and got Brad Hand and Adam Cimber in the deal. Had they not traded Mejia to San Diego he would not have made the Indians this year and would have been dealt away to somebody else.

If AJ Preller had a trade for a pitcher and had to throw in a catcher.....keep Hedges and trade Mejia and bring up Austin Allen.

Throw in Hosmer & Hedges 35-40% of the time = potentially best MLB INF ?

Sure looks to shape up that way.

Pretty sure Hedges will be around for quite a few years based on his value to the team beyond just defense but working with the pitchers. So that combo will be seen.

A split with Mejia though will exist since, despite Hedges desire to play every day, very few catchers carry the full workload and from what I have seen from Hedges he does hit better with some off days ... so probably some strategic sharing depending on who is pitching for the Padres and who is pitching for the opposition. Mejia still has upside so he he is not being move .... yet.

Odds are it is Austin Allen who gets put into some deal ... everyone needs more catching even as back-ups. Then in a couple of years we will see about Torrens / Campusano.

Urias will hit (I hope) but the Padres over reacted to the ugly ML start by Rizzo ... clearly he could not hit ML pitching and in PETCO .... then quickly shipped him off for Cashner and Rizzo (who was about 22 at the time) is now an All-Star while Cashner is, well, Cashner. Patience ... patience ... patience. Trust the process.
