Padres at Rockies

Please don't blame a catcher for a pitcher's problems. That is weak. That is what Syndergaard did last year. The pitcher pitches the same no matter who is catching.

If a pitcher has no faith in the catcher he will not throw all of his stuff. Box a ball once....okay but to see the same stuff over and over like Yates has seen from his"Catcher" makes you wonder. Yates is a pro and has to block that out for sure but it still is there

Why isn't he throwing his splitter down almost to the point of scraping the deck ?

Not weak......he throws different with different catchers.

You like Mejia as a catcher....I don't

RP has been generally bad .... but only one week and not a lot of innings.

Padres (in all MLB) sit 24th (5.40) in ERA ... then consider three of the Padres competitors for the playoffs:

28th METS ... 7.09 ERA

29th REDS ... 7.46

30th CUBS ... 9.55 (YIKES!)

=======

Good thing the SP is strong so far.

Padres are 4th in ERA and 13th in WHIP.

On the offense ... so far very good (despite some weaknesses ... all teams have some weaknesses). In ALL MLB, Padres are:

#1 in runs scored

#1 in walks taken

then if you discount Miami and Philadelphia (only played 3 games so misleading) ...

#2  in OBP

#2 in OPS

=====

It will be interesting to see where the regression will be (and how much) vs. who improves. Will there be at least some sort of balance going forward of the pluses and minuses?

This is getting ridiculous to blame Mejia for our pitchers shortcomings so far.  Hedges was the catcher when we had a 1 -0 lead against Arizona but gave up the go ahead runs so that we had to pinch-hit for him the next inning.  Hedges played the whole game when the Giants came all the way back and we lost 7-6.  Hedges was the starter in this last game when we lost the two-run lead to Colorado after Strahm came in.  Just like in our first loss to Arizona, we had to pinch-hit for him to get back in the game because he is so dismal at the plate.

Yes, Yates does not like to pitch to Mejia but he has to get over it.  It seems Mejia is getting a lot of the calls from the dugout, so if he doesn't like those calls he can shake them off just like any pitcher does.  You can't compare Mejia defensively with Hedges but Mejia has not been awful; he doesn't have any passed balls, he's kept almost everything in front of him with good foot movement; his framing has been decent; the opponent's running game hasn't gone wild.  The problem has been with the pitchers getting behind in the count and giving hitters good pitches to hit OR going 0-2/1-2 in the count and then giving up a hit or walk.  This is going to improve but to blame Mejia for our two losses is ridiculous.  We don't need finger-pointing, we need to come together to improve as a team in all phases of the game, including setting our defensive alignment (which I don't think has been that good) and putting the right RP in at the right time.

I look forward to the grit and perseverance the team has shown so far.  It's going to be another tough one today with probably our weakest starter, but anything can happen and hope it goes our way today.  Go Padres!

Today’s game has the potential to be a real Coors Field run-fest. Freeland had an 9.25 ERA last year at COORS in 10 starts and Lucchesi relies on his Churve which may not break or be that easy to command (normally difficult to command) in the thin air of Denver.

Having opined that, expect a 1-0 game in 10 innings.

I'm all in!  Go Padres!

Like the announced starting line-up against Freeland/Colorado.  I think we have a better than 50-50 chance.  Let's play the game!

Go Padres!

Hosmer to the 10 day IL ... gastritis?

A call-up tomorrow.

France - Cronenworth - Naylor will be getting some work at 1B .... seems Myers is ticketed for DH vs. LHP with Olivares in RF.

I’m guessing this is why Quantrill hasn’t seen the mound recently.

He may need to go 4-5 innings if things get rough early for Joey.

Tomorrow’s call up might have a “strategic” component. Think Mateo is technically eligible to come off the 10 day IL BUT if the Padres activate him they can’t send him down (out of options). Consider that Hosmer shouldn’t be down too long from gastritis and the start was probably post dated ... sure could send down Naylor but in a week likely have to send down another when the roster drops to 28.

There is roster room ... maybe add Almonte to the 40 and activate him ... then putting him on waivers would not be a big issue (likely not claimed) and then just return him to the alternative site. Leave Mateo on the IL as long as possible?

I’m sure Trammell’s name will come up but he just is not ready to help in 2020 and by adding him then optioning him .... uses up the first of his 3 option years. In his case that may be an issue in 2023. So why risk it and not get any current value.
