Quote from MrPadre19 on July 31, 2020, 9:25 pmWell another horrible outing for the Bullpen but we got the win and that’s all that ultimately matters.
With it we take 1st place in the Division and the best record in the National League.
Only the Yankees have a better record than our Padres.

I am pretty sure I'll do that forever.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2020, 9:50 pmI know Mejia is not a good defensive catcher .... but there seems to be an extreme disconnect between him and Yates. Yates was stepping off ... shaking off ... frustrated beyond the fact that his split-finger was not working and is command was horrible.
Have not seen any of the other pitchers having that level of disconnect with Mejia.

Post game Tingler re-iterated that Yates is still the closer and will be in in the next save situation.

Need to see more of Cronenworth ... 2 hits and his two outs were hit solidly. His defensive work at 1B (not his position) was plus. Looked good every time out this season. Naylor is more “at risk” than before.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 31, 2020, 10:17 pmNot sure why Yates can't connect with Mejia, because it seems all the other pitchers can. I think he did well getting Richards back in gear after giving up that home run. Heroes abounded. I was looking very closely at how the bottom of the line-up did and basically they came through. Cronenworth was exceptional after looking bad the last time out; Naylor looked much more comfortable and took better swings than he had before. Hedges had some decent hacks and Mejia did get a hit. Also, Stammen pitched well this time.
Strahm and Yates both can't seem to locate their pitches. I was hoping for Hill over Strahm but maybe we'll seem him tomorrow.
It will be another tough one because Lucchesi doesn't do well in Colorado and could get torched early. If he can give us 3-4 and Quantrill can come in and give us another 3-4, I think our offense will give us a chance to win even though Freeland can be very nasty at times.
6-2 and with the Dodgers loss, temporarily in 1st place! Go Padres!

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 31, 2020, 10:24 pmNaylor is a mess....period...........Bring up Tramell and send Naylor away
Mejia and Yates goes back to last year and I have said it before....Pitchers do not have faith in Mejia and won't throw a "waste" pitch because they have no idea if Mejia will stop it much less catch it. Yates hates him catching. Hedges in that game and Yates throws different
Mejia does nothing for me at all....he is not a catcher....I would put France back there 😉
Padres caught a break but it doesn't matter what they look like....ugly works 🙂

Quote from JasonE135 on July 31, 2020, 11:16 pmPlease don't blame a catcher for a pitcher's problems. That is weak. That is what Syndergaard did last year. The pitcher pitches the same no matter who is catching.

Good observation on both Mejia & Cronenworth. I noticed the Yates/Mejia issue last year; just seemed like they weren't on the same page more than once; could see Yates getting agitated. Not an excuse for Yates terrible start, but I'm not going to read too much into a crappy outing at Coors Field.
I thought the same exact thing with JC; impressive AB's vs Gray who stymied the rest of the lineup, but he also looked great on defense.
