Padres at Rockies

PreviousPage 8 of 8

Not sure they will do it against the LAD .... but agree Profar needs an off day or at least get moved down the order until some hits start to fall.

Not giving up yet on his role at 2B .... 37 PA and only 5 K plus consistently long PAs suggest he has had little luck since has had some hard hit balls. However, I do keep in mind that he has not been a high average / OBP guy ... so will look to alternatives.

While Hosmer is out .... using Garcia, Cronenworth, and Naylor to cover 2B/1B/DH vs RHP for some games gives Profar a break ... might up the offense ... gives more of a read on Cronenworth and Naylor heading into the coming roster reductions.

Always a risk to buy into the shiny new toy too quickly, but Cronenworth ... beyond his offensive performance so far ... really looks good (and natural) to me in the field. Had never played 1B in the minors and is handing it like a pro.

Think he may use 2020 to win the 2021 starting 2B role after Profar goes FA.

Saw a note by Cassavell that Patino has been very impressive at the alternative site and MAY have moved to the head of the class for a call-up.

Could be in the pen or start in lieu of Quantrill / Lucchesi.

A call up now does not earn a full year of service time (good) ... Patino would have been added to the 40 next winter ... he gets some valuable ML time setting him up for a stronger start in 2021. Most importantly, he may be an upgrade for the current staff.

Not sure how long they wait for the move .... but probably need a couple more Quantrill / Lucchesi starts.

Concur that with 3 RHPs going for LA, and at least 2 are considered very very good, have to get production from our LH bats.  Cronenworth's had only one really bad game at the plate and Naylor has looked much more alert and immersed in what's happening so he may be coming out of his early funk.  Got to get production from C and 2b because Dodgers pitchers are likely to be particularly tough on Myers; likewise, Tatis, Machado and Pham will need to string together good ABs and make more contact/less K's.  Paddack, Lamet and Richards are going to have to be what we think they can be for us to win this series and the top guns in the bullpen need to bounce back when the time comes.  I look for us to be competitive but without Hosmer's bat in the line-up, it definitely will be a challenging series.

It's fantastic that with just 10 days "down", Pads now control Gore & Patino THROUGH 2026 (at least).

Looking ahead past LAD, Pads have first off day, then 3 at home vs Ariz, then 4 against LAD again, but in LA.

If they stay in their current SP pattern, all P's would get an extra day's rest from off day, then vs Ariz would be:  Joey/Davies/CP.

But then at LAD would be #2-#5 with one of those SP roles unsettled & CP would miss the 4 game series vs LAD.

SO... 2 ideas to tweak the rotation more favorably vs LAD:

1)  Move Davies to #4 spot in rotation.  He starts 1st game vs Ariz on regular rest.  Than have Joey AND Cal start the 2nd & 3rd games vs. Ariz.  I think Joey deserves 1 more "non Colorado" start to prove he deserves to hang onto a SP role, but Quantrill deserves an opportunity too.  Perfect solution.  Really pits them fairly against each other for the next start in the #5 spot.  But also lines up #1-#4 (Davies) for @ LAD.  Top 3 would be going on two extra days rest, Davies one extra day rest. FWIW the NEXT series is 3 @ Ariz... setting up #5/#1/#2 vs Dbacks.

2)  Call up "Patino" to start the 1st game vs Ariz.  Then Davies, then Joey/Cal.  Also sets up #1-#3 to go on two extra days rest vs LAD.  #4 vs LAD can either be "Patino" if effective, or Davies if not.  But if rosters contract to 28 as currently planned, this one might be tough to pull off.  His start would land on 8/7; not sure if the move to 28 happens THAT day or 8/8?

I like your thoughts on the rotation going forward but I think a lot has to happen to pull the trigger on these ideas.   Firstly, we have to win at least two of three from LA.  Assuming we do that, agree with Davies to moving to the #4 slot because he is very controlled in his effort and doesn't seem overly taxed - he could easily go with 4 days rest, maybe even 3 if need be; despite the results, I really like what I've seen of Davies and feel much more confident with him on the mound than I was with Lauer.  The problem with Lucchesi and Quantrill both starting their own games is who comes in after them as the long man.  Strahm and Perdomo have been starters before, but I'm not that confident in Strahm for a longer stretch of innings even though Tingler/Rothschild may be.  It seems this could only happen if we get great extended efforts from our top starting 3.  Now if you call up Patino and have him piggy back with either Lucchesi or Quantrill in the first 2 games against Arizona, that might work out better.  Fun to think about and I hope the Padres don't get too locked in with their thinking and not use all the resources available to them.
